Fortnite is a very popular game and the fun part is that you can play it on the go, in the form of Fortnite Mobile. All you really need to do is download the game on your phone and you are good to go. Fortnite Mobile is not available on the Google Play Store and you need to download the game on Android from the official site.
Why is that the case you ask? It might be a risky move but it is a power play and it seems that EPIC is very confident that it will be a good direction to take in the long term. EPIC Games’ Tim Sweeney touched on the matter and he explained why the company chose to do this for Fortnite Mobile. The following is what he had to say in this regard:
Epic’s goal is to bring its games directly to customers. We believe gamers will benefit from competition among software sources on Android. Competition among services gives consumers lots of great choices and enables the best to succeed based on merit.
Having the Fortnite Mobile on the Google Play Store means that eat time the game is downloaded or in-game items are purchased then Google will also get a big cut. EPIC does not want that to happen and want to make as much as it can. EPIC Games’ Tim Sweeney did not shy away from the matter and the following is what he had to say in this regard:
Avoiding the 30 percent’ store tax’ is a part of Epic’s motivation. It’s a high cost in a world where game developers’ 70 percent must cover all the cost of developing, operating, and supporting their games. And it’s disproportionate to the cost of the services these stores perform, such as payment processing, download bandwidth, and customer service. We’re intimately familiar with these costs from our experience operating Fortnite as a direct-to-customer service on PC and Mac.
Fortnite Mobile is a very popular game and I don’t think the downloads will be affected much. It might be inconvenient to download it from the official website but the players that want the game will do it anyway, so it doesn’t really matter.
