God of War: All Frozen Flame Locations

Upgrade The Leviathan Axe.

The new Leviathan Axe in God of War is an absolute beast of a weapon that allows Kratos to pull off some incredible carnage feats. But there is a limit to its strength.

As you play through the story, the ax’s effectiveness begins to fade over time, signaling to the player that upgrades have to be made to get it back to fighting form.

And to perform these upgrades, you require extremely rare materials known as Frozen Flames. Not only do these increase the power of the Leviathan Axe and unlock new abilities, but they also slowly enhance its appearance with ornate gold engravings and a larger blade.

This guide will show players how they can find each of the Frozen Flames in the game.

Fully Upgraded Leviathan Axe.

Your Leviathan Axe starts at level 1 by default, and it can be upgraded a total of five times before you hit the level cap of 6. Each of these requires one Frozen Flame each, and all but one is found by simply playing the main story.

It is recommended that you always upgrade your Axe and your armor as soon as you have the necessary resources.

Because of how this game is structured, enemies keep getting tougher as you play, but no clear prompts are given when you are under-leveled. You start to deal less and take more damage until you figure out that an upgrade is due.

The Dwarf Brok.

The first God of War Frozen Flame is given to the players after playing the game for a few hours and encounter one of the Dwarf Brothers.

Brok explains the gear upgrade system’s entire concept to you and rewards you with your first flame as part of the tutorial. You can then use it to improve your weapon for the first time.

Frozen Flame #2

First Ogre Boss.

As you make your way to The Mountain during the first act of the game, you will come to a Foothills region.

Make your way past this area as intended, then as you’re about to transition to the next location, you will face off against your first Ogre boss. Defeat him to receive your second God of War Frozen Flame.

Frozen Flame #3

Járn Fótr.

When you finally reach The Mountain, you’ll have to go through an extended sequence of events as part of the main narrative.

One of these contains an elaborate puzzle involving mine carts and a pulley system, and near its end you will encounter a Troll boss named ‘Járn Fótr.’ Defeat him to receive your third God of War Frozen Flame.

Frozen Flame #4

The God Magni.

About two-thirds of the way through the game, players will reach the impressively realized Thamur’s Corpse region. This is the area based around the body of a fallen Jötunn.

It is also near the end of this area that you will first encounter Thor’s children, Magni and Modi’s gods. A boss fight will commence, after which you will find your fourth God of War Frozen Flame scattered amongst the loot pile.

Frozen Flame #5

Niflheim.

The fifth and final God of War Frozen Flame is the only one in the game that is completely optional. You do not have to acquire this if you don’t want to, but it does make the game significantly more manageable, especially if you intend to take on the Valkyries.

To get this, you first have to unlock the realm of Niflheim by finding four Niflheim Language Ciphers in purple chests scattered around the world. This also requires you to have progressed in the game a fair bit and gained access to the Bifröst.

Once in the region, talk to Sindri to get the side-quest ‘Ivaldi’s Workshop.’ This requires the player to gather 500 Mist Echoes, then use them to buy a key known as the ‘Entry Stone’ from the dwarf’s shop. Use this item on the pedestal in the first room of the region to unlock the center chamber gate.

Finally, you have to grind your way through Niflheim and collect at least 5000 more Mist Echoes. This can take anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes, depending on your luck.

Use these on the chest on the center chamber’s left side that requires exactly 5000 of the resource to get the Chilling Mist of Niflheim.

This can be exchanged in Sindri’s shop to gain the final Frozen Flame.
