The Best PS4 Open World Games

The PS4 has a massive library of games. The console is almost at the end of its life cycle however Sony is still pushing games out for it. These games even include Next-Gen Playstation 5 titles like Horizon Forbidden West and the recently announced God of War Ragnarok.

So aside from a fantastic library of exclusive first-party titles. There are tons of amazing Open World games that PS4 users can get on to play to get the best value out of the system before they make the switch over to the PS5.

The Open world games that we will be looking at today all have something special and unique to offer. There might be a few caveats but surely they will please you with their gripping stories and awe-inspiring exploration. So without further delay let’s briefly discuss our list of the best Open World games to play on the PS4.

45. Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition

Final fantasy 15
  • Developer: Square Enix Business Division 2
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Single-player or Multi-Player: Both

The Final Fantasy game shave been known for its gripping stories. They are one of the founding pillars of JRPGs alongside Dragon Quest. Over the past decade or so, there have been numerous Final Fantasy games like the MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, and even the soon to be releasing and hyped-up, Final Fantasy 16.

However, when it comes to the title in the franchise that truly speaks volumes of Open-World capabilities is none other than Final Fantasy 15. The game had a rough development, as it was originally under the “Versus XIII” project before being re-made into the next FF title for the series.

You as play Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum, a soon-to-be-crowned king who travels the World of Eos with his friends; Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis. He learns that his Kingdom has been besieged by the Empire. Now it is up to Noctis as he must rightfully take back his father’s throne and claim the power of “King of Kings”.

FF15 has a somewhat barren and lackluster Open World design. This is why it ranks the lowest on our list. There are some equally fun and wholesome parts like riding along the roads of Eos in the Regalia car or traversing the landscapes on your Chocobo mounts. But that is far from a saving grace due to other mediocre aspects.

The Royal edition contains the complete saga of the game. Meaning you will have access to all of the Character Episode DLCs and other free content updates. The storytelling and other under-appreciated aspects make it a good Open-World Final Fantasy game available on the PS4.

  • Final Fantasy XV’s Royal Edition comes with both the season pass and new content.
  • The story of Final Fantasy XV is one of the best stories ever written in video game history because it manages to keep you interested the entire time despite being incredibly complex.
  • Noctis, the main character of Final Fantasy XV, is exceptionally well-written and experiences some extremely complex development throughout the narrative.
  • The writing in Final Fantasy XV does an excellent job of creating an emotional bond between the player and the characters by making the characters relatable and endowed with amazing personalities.
  • The environment and character models in Final Fantasy XV have incredible detail.
  • Final Fantasy XV has outstanding and enduring music.
  • The combat in Final Fantasy XV is incredibly enjoyable and satisfying.

  • In Final Fantasy XV, some of the side quests are poorly designed and can be challenging to complete.

44. Final Fantasy X

Final fantasy X
FFX HD Remaster
  • Developer: Square Enix Business Division 1
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player Game

Speaking of JRPGs, it was only right we went ahead with one of the best Final Fantasy titles. Final Fantasy X was originally launched on the Playstation 2 and featured a mediocre follow-up sequel known as Final Fantasy X-2.

However, the main game of the discussion is FFX. The main hero of the story is Tidus and the world of Spira. He is a renowned Blitzball player; an underwater-based football tag sport. His world is suddenly turned upside down as a legendary beast known as ‘Sin’ thrusts him into the future of another part of the world.

Along the way, we meet Yuna, the Love interest of Tidus, and many other characters and creatures. Now it is up to Tidus to shape his story and find out his origins as well as grow closer to Yuna and her companions as they fulfill her pilgrimage and stop Sin from causing more destruction.

The game features a semi-linear Open World that towards the end-game, expands wider in range. It opens up a variety of different mini-games and side content to hunt. Completing these things unlocks the most powerful weapons and gear for Tidus and the rest of the party members.

Final Fantasy X has a complex yet simple turn-based combat. It is strategic and requires proper knowledge of your turns. There are sleuths of awesome-looking summons in the game including Bahamut and Shiva to aid you in battle. Overall, it is one of the most beloved Open World Final Fantasy games ever made, and its Remaster, Final Fantasy X-2 is available on the PS4.

  • Final Fantasy X features a beautifully designed and detailed world, with unique locations and environments to explore.
  • The story of Final Fantasy X is well-written and does a great job of keeping you curious and wanting to find out more about the lore.
  • The characters are developed very nicely in Final Fantasy X and you might find yourself getting emotionally attached to them.
  • Final Fantasy X features a memorable and iconic soundtrack that adds to the atmosphere of the game.

  • You cannot skip cutscenes in Final Fantasy X, which might frustrate some players that do not wish to watch the story.
  • There might be minor frame drops present in Final Fantasy X
  • You might not see any emotions on the character’s face in Final Fantasy X because the facial animations are not the best.

43. Kingdom Hearts 3

Kingdom Hearts 3 PS4
Kingdom Hearts 3
  • Developer: Square Enix Business Division 3
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player Game

It is without any given question that the Kingdom Hearts Franchise is known to boast action-packed gameplay and combat. Most players in the fanbase cherish it for the Disney crossover storyline and characters.

Kingdoms Hearts 3 is the latest title in the Franchise and leaves many questions to be asked about the future. Players are once again joined by Sora and along with his friends; Donald and Goofy. Together they venture across various new worlds to eliminate the Darkness and help restore balance to the order of Light and Darkness.

Right from the start, players can explore multi-facet Disney worlds taken straight from the movies. Where they can meet various Characters like Woody and Buzz Light year from Toy Story as well as Jack Sparrow and his crewmates from Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Open world elements of Kingdom Hearts 3 are massive. The levels are much bigger in scale as compared to previous titles like Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts 2. They offer a much-needed verticality in both combat and progression. It is all topped by a super-satisfying hack n slash combat system with Keyblades and magic.

We highly recommend playing through the previous games which are bundled as the All-in-One Package of Kingdom Hearts. The story can be confusing and tedious for a lot of players. But we assure you the combat and charm of the game will keep you glued with every title. We can only hope what Square Enix might cook up with the next title, Kingdom hearts 4 slated to launch in the coming years.

  • Kingdom Hearts 3 has a great new feature that sets it apart from its predecessors: the “form change” ability.
  • Huge, extremely interesting, and even rewarding to explore worlds can be found in Kingdom Hearts 3.
  • Both the original characters and characters from various Disney franchises are well-developed and incredibly likable in Kingdom Hearts 3.
  • The graphics are amazing and greatly increase immersion in the whole experience.

  • Many of the worlds feel like repeats of the original films’ plots and lack depth.
  • Even on high difficulty, it might seem too simple to defeat bosses, which may discourage some players.

42. Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom

Ni no Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom
  • Developer: Level-5 Studios
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player Game

Ni no Kuni 2 is a Ghibli-inspired game and the sequel to the first game, Wrath of the White Witch. It supports unique RPG elements with a fantastic open world map. The game was followed up by an MMO-RPG spinoff for smartphones called Ni No Kuni Cross Worlds.

The game takes place more than a hundred years after the events of the first game. It is about Evan, a half-human Half-Grimalkin boy who is set to become the next heir of his kingdom. However, he is soon faced with the odds of a coup from the other species.

So now with the help of Roland, a human man from another world, he is tasked with the impossible task of rebuilding his kingdom from the ground up. Along the way, they will unite the forces of various other kingdoms and meet characters who will shape Evan’s heroic party.

There is tons of exploration to be done across the Open Word landscape in the game. There are many uniquely designed kingdoms to explore like Goldpaw and Hydopolis. The game has a fantastic builder-sim-like aspect where you design your Kingdom and place citizens to work in different estates.

Aside from that, you can hunt and take down various creatures and beasts found while exploring the world map. There are tons of grinding to be done for each character as well as tons of side quests to complete. The game is great for anyone looking for a light-hearted Open World RPG for the PS4. Not to mention the game has an adorable Ghibli Movie art style and supports a smooth 60 frames-per-second.

  • Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom has a great tale with several interesting and well-developed characters.
  • The aesthetics of Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom are breathtaking and do an excellent job of immersing you in the game.
  • The world is enormous, and there are numerous things to keep you interested.
  • Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom can be quite soothing if played on normal mode, but it can also be quite challenging if played on exceptional hard.

  • The dungeons and side missions might rapidly become monotonous.
  • Sometimes the English translation is incorrect, resulting in an unauthentic experience.
  • At times, Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom contains much too much talk.

41. Fallout 4

PS4 Fallout 4
Fallout 4
  • Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
  • Publisher: Bethesda SoftWorks
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player Game

When it comes down to the best western RPGs, The Fallout franchise is one of many to come to mind in an instant. Fallout 4 was the latest title in the mainline game series. It was followed up by a multiplayer-focused game called Fallout: 76 which ultimately sent the series’ reputation into a complete downfall.

Fallout 4 provides a great luxury of open-world freedom as well as deep RPG element gameplay. There are many companions that you use as your sidekicks in the game including NPCs like Hancock. You can further boost their potential with the various Companion Perks to unlock for them.

Players venture across the post-apocalyptic lands of Boston, MA in hopes of reuniting with their long-lost child. There are various types of strong enemies to fight throughout the game like the Deathclaw among other fearsome and deadly creatures across the Commonwealth.

The game’s highlight is that players can build their Settlement and invite many friendly NPCs to take shelter there and grow it. It is a creative suite that is highly remembered in the hearts of diehard fans. Although the game might not be as creative and revolutionary as Fallout New Vegas.

But being able to take part in various Factions like the Railroad Clan. Farming for materials like the Fusion cores and Aluminium to create powerful items like the Ballistic Weave Mod. These features combined with the brilliant & classic Bethesda Open-World design make for it to be a great Video Game to pick up for the PS4.

  • You can build your own settlements, armor, and weapons with the crafting system, which makes you feel like you have control over the game’s universe.
  • Fallout 4 gives the post-apocalyptic scenario a lot of depth and attention.
  • Fallout 4’s combat system is exciting and dynamic.
  • Several of the settings are quite gorgeous, and each one has a distinct atmosphere.

  • You can completely lose interest in the story if it becomes very tedious rapidly.
  • Sometimes it seems like the dialogue is overly straightforward and formulaic.
  • Many bugs are found in Fallout 4.

39. Prototypes 1 & 2

The Prototype games
Prototype 1 & 2
  • Developer: Radical Entertainment
  • Publisher: Activision
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player Game

The ultimate fun in today’s gaming era is all divided into fun bombastic gameplay or thought-provoking and emotional storytelling. The Prototype games the former with exhilarating gameplay almost similar to the Infamous games found since the PS3. Badass powers combined with a gritty New York metropolis setting.

Both Prototype games deliver high-octane and brutal violence through their combat. You play Alex Mercer who is a scientist that is afflicted with a mental illness. He gains the inhumane abilities of shape-shifting and constructing weapons and various other arsenals through these special powers.

The game may have some moments where the AI may act wonky or the story might feel too edgy for anyone’s comfort or viewing pleasure. But there is no questioning the fact that the game has one of the most well-praised traversals and combat styles. Mowing down enforcers with beat-em-up-like abilities feels ultra-satisfying.

Both of the games are heavily optimized for the PS4. They are available as a part of the Biohazard Bundle on the PSN Store that offers both titles. It is relatively cheap nowadays on sale and surely will prove to be an interesting choice for Action-Openworld gaming fans on the Playstation 4.

Pros of Prototype 1:

  • The combat of Prototype is incredibly fun and appeals to players that are fans of blood and gore in battles.
  • Prototype features a wide variety of abilities you can use to defeat your enemies.
  • The story is incredibly immersive and well-written, as it does a great job of keeping you attached and wanting to know what happens next.
  • Prototype offers a great challenge to players who want it without ever getting too frustrating for beginner players.

Cons of Prototype 1:

  • The missions you get after finishing Prototype are not designed well and can get incredibly frustrating, which reduces its replay value.
  • Prototype does not have much variety when it comes to enemies.
  • The visuals of Prototype are outdated and look terrible for this modern age, which might be a deal breaker for some players.

Pros of Prototype 2:

  • Prototype 2 features improved graphics and visuals compared to Prototype 1, providing a more immersive gaming experience.
  • The combat system in Prototype 2 has been improved, with a greater focus on strategy and tactics.
  • Prototype 2 has a wide variety when it comes to enemies and they all have different abilities or characteristics.
  • New tasks and hunting down collectibles can be incredibly fun.

Cons of Prototype 2:

  • The controls of Prototype 2 are incredibly unintuitive while feeling very unsatisfying and awkward.
  • The AI of Prototype 2 is horrible and can be incredibly frustrating or boring to deal with.
  • Prototype 2 has some reused animations from Prototype 1, which might not sit well with some players.

38. Haven

PS4 Haven
  • Developer & Publisher: The Game Bakers
  • Single or Multi-player: Both

Haven is one of the lesser-known titles that was just released a couple of years ago. It is mostly centered around the dating sim aspect of two main characters Yu and Kay. But the gameplay is heavily revolved around navigating on a forgotten planet as you travel from zone to zone, learning all about the civilization and its habitat.

The game is unique in a sense with its turn-based combat. It is different than others because you control both characters using the different sides of the Controller and Keyboard. Additionally, players can control them using separate controllers in couch co-op, making it an excellent game for friends and couples.

The two lovers leave their homeland and crash land on an unidentified planet. Together they venture across its many zones, discovering ancient ruins and a growing and spreading infectious plague. The planet is divided into multiple areas where players can discover various interactions and fight strong enemies and creatures.

The combat is simple yet it requires you to pay attention since it is also an active time system. You will also see several interactions between the couple as you learn more about their characters and backgrounds. There are plentiful side objectives and tasks to keep you immersed and the main quest to guide with the primary progress.

The game is available on almost every platform with enhanced versions for the PS5 and Series X. The Game Bakers are known for making incredible games like Furi so it was nice seeing them take a newer fresh approach by designing a comforting Open-World game like Haven.

  • The vibrant and colorful world of Haven has received praise for its beautiful visual design, which is both eye-catching and immersive.
  • Playing Haven is a wonderful way to unwind after a stressful day.
  • The story of Haven is gripping and moving, and it deals with issues of loyalty and love.
  • The writing is excellent, and the characters are very likable.

  • Some players might need some practice using the controls in Haven.

37. Dragon Ball Z Kakarot

DBZ Kakarot
Dragon Ball Z Kakarot
  • Developer: CyberConnect2
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player Game

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is an Open World Adventure game. It is the first major installment in the long franchise of DBZ games to feature an Open World style design and gameplay since the Budokai series. The game lets you relive through the major arcs of the hit shonen show coupled with exciting and strategic beat em combat.

The gameplay is similar in elements to the recent Xenoverse games. Players in the story mode are locked in place in a determined zone and duke it out in a fast-paced arena-style combo battle. The prominent features are undoubtedly the RPG aspects which are unique to the series this time around.

Players can freely explore the various iconic cities and landscapes taken straight from the show and manga. You can hunt down various items and currencies whilst free-roaming the map, complete side quests to level up your characters, and even fight powerful resurrected bosses too.

The legendary villain battles like Frieza and Majin Buu all put up a difficult fight for anyone who does not pay attention.

Overall, Kakarot is well worth your time if you are looking for a DBZ game that has a faithful adaptation to its origin and roots. The RPG aspects and combat make it an instant buy. Most of all, It is undoubtedly a fantastic creation of an Open-World game mixed with the DBZ universe, perfect for fans of the show who are on PS4.

  • You get a fantastic modern video game experience of the Dragon Ball Story thanks to the gorgeous graphics.
  • While maintaining the 3D models, some of the cutscenes are beautifully animated and resemble anime.
  • The environment is very realistic and lets you visit many well-known Dragon Ball locations.
  • The user interface is incredibly intuitive.

  • A few of the side quests are incredibly tedious and depressing.
  • There aren’t many gorgeously animated cutscenes, and those that are there are mostly only found at the beginning.
  • Players hoping for a more intricate combat system may be very disappointed by how straightforward and linear the combat is.
  • The bosses quickly become monotonous.

36. Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 PS4
Borderlands 3
  • Developer: GearBox Software
  • Publisher: 2K
  • Single or Multi-player: Both

Borderlands 3 is the latest installment of the Borderlands franchise. It is the third game in the mainline series with a spinoff title; Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, which was released on March 25, 2022. Borderlands 3 is known for facing a few minor controversies but it is still a fantastic Open-World Looter shooter.

Players once again step into the shoes of four brand new Vault Hunters; Amara, FL4K, Moze, and Zane. They all have drastically unique sets of abilities and builds to create like the powerful Iron Bear build for Moze.

The storytelling can be hit or miss with many people. The hardcore fans of the series neglected it since the downgrade from an amazing Video Games Villain such as Handsome Jack to the wannabe-Streamer Calypso Twins was a questionable decision on the writer’s part.

That aside, it is fundamentally one of the most fun and addictive borderlands experiences. The combat tweaks and adjustments made since the 2nd game in the series are noticeable in the buttery smooth gunplay. There are brand new locations to explore throughout the Galaxy for and more than a Billion Guns to hunt and farm.

You heard that right. It might sound comical enough but Borderlands 3 pushed the looter shooter boundary by doubling down on the loot chase incentives. Players can spend hours farming bosses for various types of different legendary guns to suit their builds and characters. Borderlands 3 fulfills the ultimate gamer fantasy of providing stellar and satisfying gunplay, so it easily is a must-buy for Open world shooter Video Game fanatics.

  • By bringing together characters and plot lines from earlier games, Borderlands 3 wraps up the entire Borderlands series’ narrative and gives the overall narrative a satisfying resolution.
  • Playing multiplayer is a tonne of fun, especially in the cooperative mode with friends.
  • Fast-paced, action-packed gameplay is featured.

  • Some players might think that there isn’t enough variety or content on each planet.
  • Some players might feel that the endgame isn’t as challenging as they would like.
  • Borderlands 3 has no actual raid bosses.

35. Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is a Post-Apocalyptic Open-World Survival game that was released on February 4, 2022. The game is a sequel to the original beloved Dying Light game. and it prominently features a mix of free parkour melee and shooting combat coupled with a fantastic emphasis on world exploration.

Dying Light maintains the general nature of the first game in perfect essence. You fight to stay alive against a city overrun by zombies and rogue militia troops and gangs. Players can arm themselves with various Weapons and Killer-instinct Skills to combat various enemies with grace and precision.

You even enhance your equipment by finding the Best Blueprints & Easter Egg arsenal tucked away in the blind spots of the map and quests. There is even a paraglider to benefit the players who dislike ground traversal.

When it comes to Dying Light, the diehard community of fans appreciates its maneuverability and combat the most out of anything. Thus Farming XP for the Combat and Parkour progress bars become essential as the true fun and viability in the game’s smooth combat are derived from it.

Although the latest entry is Saints Row 4. The game that made SR4 go off the rails wacky was due to the release of Saints Row 3. Even now, years later after the original release. The remaster of Saints Row 3 is surprisingly more appreciated by fans because of the game’s balance in maintaining the craziness over its mediocre successor.

Saints Row: The Third Remastered version was released in May 2020, almost 10 years after the original release. The remaster is well-received for preserving the spark and charm of the original with a sleuth of graphic enhancements and performance tweaks.

The Saints Row series is famous in the industry for combining different elements from the sandbox genre and mixing them up with comical and over-the-top themes such as god-like powers and other hilarious features.

The game is centered around gang warfare but dialed up to a hundred on the lunacy and fever-dream scale. There is so much to do in the game which can be similar in hindsight to the GTA series. But what Saints Row does differently than it is the engaging and fun dynamic of multiplying the creative mayhem to tenfold heights.

With a new paint job fit for the current generation consoles, Saints Row the Third is well worth your time if you are looking for a plain and simple Open World Sandbox game on the PS4 that isn’t afraid of going full-on absurd in both style and gameplay to fuel your inner chaos fantasy.

  • The updated graphics and visual effects in Saints Row: The Third’s remastered version give the game a more contemporary and engaging appearance.
  • The AI in Saints Row: The Third Remastered has been enhanced from the original game’s, making enemies more difficult to defeat and giving the gameplay more depth.

Ubisoft is not one to amaze the current generation as some of their franchises have seen “better days”. However one cannot simply deny the sheer complexity and variety of its older titles from a few years ago. Watch Dogs is one of the few underdog franchises of the company that still manages to garner immense love and support.

Watch Dogs 2 was released back in 2016 and upon launch, it was apparent that the developers had achieved a leap over some of the bland qualities and aspects of the first game. Although you can find some debates even now about fans preferring Aiden Pearce in the first game as a much better protagonist than Marcus in WD2.

Watch Dogs 2 is based on the real-life setting of San Francisco, CA. The game features Marcus Holloway as our main hero who gets recruited by an independent group of hackers known as DedSec, to take down the corrupted IT software known as CtOS and their founder company, Blume.

These features including the side missions and other collectible activities unlock brand-new weapons and skills. They make Marcus more technical in his gadgetry and expertise.

Overall, if you haven’t yet played the game, you will instantly be pulled in by some of its appreciative features like a well-designed open world to get immersed in and enjoy. Along the way, she will meet several unique characters who will join her party including the likes of the comical and mystique witch, Maglilou, and the Pirate’s life gangster, Eizen.

The Open-world of Berseria is linear but slowly and surely it opens up to be a marvel for the most coveted JRPGs of the past decade. It looks and runs smoothly at 60FPS with dynamic hack n slash combat, which is strategic on the basis that you need to be aware of your special powers like Mystic Artes, party combos, and enemy attacks.

It all flows beautifully with a layered level design featuring zone-to-zone complexity in each dungeon and areas that you visit in the world of the Holy Midgand Empire all have an intricately designed verticality to them. The story follows our heroes Shionne and Alphen venturing across the lands of Dhana to liberate its masses from the tyranny and cruelty at the hands of the Republic of Rena.

The game is yet another underappreciated gem from Playstation. The Karma system is extremely good in that it provides 2 different routes to pursue in the game that shape Delsin’s character into being Pure-hearted or Evil.

Overall, the game runs at a smooth 60FPS on the PS4 Pro and it looks gorgeous and plays great. So if you require cool-looking and badass powers in a great Open World setting? Second Son is a worthy purchase.

  • Infamous Second Son features high-quality graphics that bring out the max potential of the PlayStation 4 console.
  • The action-packed gameplay of Infamous Second Son is highly enjoyable and incredibly satisfying, with a variety of powers and abilities to unlock and use in combat.

18. Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter World
Monster Hunter World
  • Developer & Publisher: Capcom
  • Single or Multi-player: Both

The Monster Hunter Franchise is the most popular RPG series in Japan. The game boasts some of the most robust variety of weapons and builds. It has a great sense of gameplay loop and progression incentives. The latest game in the series is Monster Hunter Rise, which was the successor to Monster Hunter World.

When it comes down to it, so much can be said about Monster Hunter World and its beloved aspects. The game manages to never drop a beat in its complex and fast-paced combat design nor in its ability to keep players engrossed on the grind for the most badass equipment.

There are 14 different weapon types to choose from including the swift and speedy Dual Blades to the Almighty Greatsword. All these weapons’ functions and performance remain the same across all games including MHR. The monster designs are all unique and provide one of the coolest armor sets you have ever seen in a game.

As of now, MHW has sold over 18+ million copies and is easily one of the most titles in the long-running series. Capcom’s plans of introducing the franchise to the western audience with MH World was a massive success. The game is playable across all platforms.

You can relatively play most of the monster hunts with up to 3 players. There are tons of side activities to do too. So it is a must-buy for anyone looking for a unique Open-World game to sink their teeth into for hours on end.

  • The slinger weapon is an extraordinarily inventive and new gameplay weapon added in Monster Hunter World that allows you to complete numerous tasks swiftly.
  • The creatures you hunt are diverse, and some of them present a significant challenge.
  • Monster Hunter World features a sophisticated weapon upgrade system that provides a strong sense of progression.
  • The story is quite interesting.

  • Some players may find the graphics and visuals unimpressive.
  • Monster Hunter World’s online multiplayer is poorly implemented and has numerous flaws in addition to being extremely unpleasant.

17. Sleeping Dogs

PS4 Sleeping Dogs
Sleeping Dogs
  • Developer: United Front Games
  • Publisher: Square Enix Europe
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player Game

‘Sleeping dogs’ was pitched to be the spiritual successor within the True Crime franchise. But it was canceled by Activision Blizzard in 2011. It arguably made the fans of the game furious so hence even after all these years of the game’s release, Sleeping Dogs is easily one of the best “sandbox” Open-World games for the PS4.

Players may relatively judge a book by its cover most of the time when they check out this game. Some might call it a bootleg GTA clone or others may love the game instantly for what it does and how it tries to be different.

Players take the role of Undercover Cop Wei Shen. He is shown to be a part of a deal gone wrong situation and gets captured in the process on undercover duty. So Shen is then thrown into the mess of going undercover once again to infiltrate the Triad Clan known as the “Sun On Yee”.

However aside from that, there is so much to do and see in the various districts of Hong Kong. Players can compete in Cock Fights, participate in races, help the police bust drug deals, and much more. The combat is an excellent mix of shooting and hand-to-hand brawling with various special attacks to spice your combos.

The story, topped with the voice acting is exceedingly good. It feels like a crime thriller drama at times and Wei Shen feels like a perfectly laid-back and charismatic protagonist. The game is available quite a few times on sale for just a couple of dollars. It is undoubtedly an instant purchase for such an underrated and fantastic game.

  • Sleeping Dogs’ depiction of a fictionalized Hong Kong is brilliant, as you can explore a variety of different neighborhoods, each with its own distinct atmosphere.
  • The story of Sleeping Dogs is executed perfectly and does an amazing job of keeping you immersed in it throughout.
  • The combat is satisfying and fast-paced while including many different combos you can use to take down your enemies.
  • In addition to the main story missions, Sleeping Dogs also includes a variety of side activities such as races, fight clubs, and mini-games that you can enjoy.

  • The camera can be very frustrating sometimes.
  • The character models and their expressions are not very natural and can look very weird sometimes.
  • The driving controls in Sleeping Dogs can be a bit frustrating, with the cars feeling clunky and difficult to control at times.

16. Gravity Rush 1 & 2

Gravity rush 1 2
Gravity Rush 1 & 2
  • Developer: Japan Studio (Team Gravity)
  • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player

The first Gravity Rush was originally released on the PS Vita console in 2012, It was later ported as a remaster version over to the PS4 three years later It has a niche fanbase. It was followed up by a sequel in 2017 which thankfully did better than the first game.

The game is excellent by all means. The only real issue was that the game had zero marketing. One could even consider it the most underrated exclusive title alongside Shadow of the Colossus remaster.

The story is about a girl named Kat who mysteriously wakes one day in a world called Heksville having no idea about her existence. She is gifted gravity-defying powers by a strange cat whom she names Dusty. Essentially these powers allow Kat to combat interdimensional creatures called the Nevi.

The traversal and combat are the most unique aspects of both of the games. Most players get turned off by the fact that a lot of the maneuverability is done by Kat’s shifting powers. You control her via the flow of the camera in an unorthodox fashion. It can be nauseating and uncomfortable for some players.

But that is only the tip of the iceberg to the real charm and beauty of the game. The world is built with so much passion and care put into its art style and soundtrack. There is an indescribable charm hidden in the game which makes you appreciate it so much.

It is disheartening that the development team has since collapsed. However, we still urge you to check them out as it is a one-of-a-kind designed Open World game whose existence many players are not aware of on the PS4.

  • The visuals and the art of Gravity Rush are incredibly beautiful and have a very distinct aesthetic.
  • The characters in Gravity Rush are incredibly diverse with unique personalities and it does a great job of attaching you to them
  • Gravity Rush features a very big world to explore and there are many things to do in it.

  • The start of Gravity Rush 1 & 2 can feel dragged out, which might turn away some players.
  • The story is not very well written and you might not be able to immerse yourself in it.
  • The camera is not the best and struggles with the fast-paced nature of Gravity Rush 1 & 2.

15. Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus Remake
  • Developer: Team ICO / Blue Point Games
  • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Single or Multi-player: Single-player Game

One of gaming’s most cherished series of games is easily Ico followed by Shadow of the Colossus. These games are historic in the sense that they inspired future open-world games including Zelda Breath of the Wild. It is especially important once you realize that Shadow of the Colossus became a cultural phenomenon.

The game already had a remaster for the PS3. However, Sony went the extra mile and gave fans a total remake with HD graphics from Blue Point Games. They are the profound creators of the new Demon Souls Remake as well as the Nathan Drake Collection. They made a remake of SOTC which was released in 2018 for the PS4.

Furthermore, the game was built from the ground up in comparison to its remaster and PS2 original port. The game follows a young boy named Wander who attempts to resurrect a girl named Mano from a deep slumber. Together with his trusty steed, Arno. Wander travels across the lands to slay 16 Colossi to free her from the curse.

Additionally, the main focus of the game is on its combat as well as the influence it has had on gaming. The David vs Goliath-inspired fight styles of each boss battle offers so much complexity and awe-inspiration. They all have different gimmicks and puzzles designed to topple them.

The game is so special in the hearts of fans, especially ones who grew up playing the original game. It is rather disappointing Sony hasn’t yet ported the game over to the PC fanbase waiting eagerly to play it. The ICO team that was responsible for creating it had a long road in its invention.

  • The sense of scale in Shadow of the Colossus is impressive, with each Colossus being a massive and formidable foe.
  • The music and sound design are excellent, adding to the atmosphere and immersion of the game.
  • The remastered version includes new features and improvements, such as improved performance and 4K support.

  • The camera can be frustrating at times, particularly when trying to go through tight spaces.
  • Controlling the horse can be incredibly annoying.
  • Some players might find the ending to be a bit underwhelming.

Judgment was later remastered and released for the Series X and PS5. LJ improves on many aspects of the original by allowing quick fighting switch styles for the protagonist, Takayuki Yagami. It has a wide array of activities to do and most importantly, it has the most stellar and underrated storytelling in all RGG titles.

The game features two distinct locations; Kamurucho which is a returning location from past entries and Yokohama, Injincho which is the primary setting for Yakuza Like a Dragon. The open world and combat of LJ are full of immersion, from dancing & bike racing to taking part in some of the hilarious side quests.

RGG crosses the boundaries of writing by implementing a story about false sexual harassment, bullying, and suicide cases. It is disappointing that the series is as niche and that it did not get featured in any award nominee in a show. We highly recommend giving the games a chance as it is perfect for newcomers as well as fans looking for a grim and dark detective Open world game on the PS4.
