Horizon Forbidden West is perhaps one of the unique sci-fi games, as it combines primal tendencies with technological advancements. It is a direct sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. You play as Aloy, a hunter from the Nora clan, in a world filled with animalistic machines that resemble ancient creatures such as dinosaurs.

Almost half a year after the events of the previous game, Aloy is presented with another challenge. A mysterious plague begins killing anyone that it infects, which leads her on a quest into the Forbidden West in hopes of finding the source and a cure.

The world is filled with futuristic machines, and you’ll also have access to such technologies. With a device on her head, known as the focus, you can scan machines, learn their weaknesses and take them down with your various weapons.

And you’ll have access to many weapons. From bows and spears for melee damage to traps and bombs in your pouch for tactical playstyle, you can come up with interesting playstyles and methods to deal with the various enemies.

Additionally, there are a number of stealth options, such as cloaking yourself, remaining hidden in bushes, distracting enemies, and performing takedowns. With a vast skill tree, RPG elements, and a huge roster of robotic enemies, you can spend hours immersed in the game!

Pros:

  • The combat system in Horizon Forbidden West is greatly enhanced and inventive compared to the previous Horizon game.
  • The graphics of Horizon Forbidden West are fascinating.
  • The open-world design is awe-inducing and offers various locations to explore in Horizon Forbidden West.

  • The change in the protagonist’s personality at hasty times is irritating in Horizon Forbidden West.
  • You have to explore different locations and find items in order to get more powerful or else you cannot progress in Horizon Forbidden West.
  • Horizon Forbidden has too many side quests which get bland to do at some point in the game.
  • Every spawning group of machines is shrouded by an invisible force field. The AI fully malfunctions when it leaves this area in Horizon Forbidden West.

Developers & PublishersRespawn Entertainment
Gameplay TypeSingle-player Action-Adventure

Star Wars is one of the most popular sci-fi series out there. From giant spaceships, lightsabers, and even the use of force, it has every element of a sci-fi series. So, it isn’t surprising to declare Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as part of the best Sci-Fi games on the PS5.

The game takes place five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. You play as Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis, who is being hunted by the Galactic Empire and the Imperial Inquisitiorius. Meanwhile, Cal is also trying to finish his training and rebuild the fallen Jedi Order.

The game also borrows elements from giant cinematic-styled games such as Uncharted. You run around, climb objects, swing through ropes, and usually end up causing chaos one way or another.

As you might know, Star Wars is known for the lightsabers, and Jedi Fallen Order ensures there are plenty of things you can do with it besides just combat. You can look for components to cause aesthetic changes such as color, the main sleeve, and even changing the sound of the saber.

The game also focuses a lot on exploration and discovery. At your spaceship, you’ll have access to the Star Map, which can take you from planet to planet. And when you discover a new force ability, you can go back to previously accessed areas to find even newer and different paths. Sometimes these new areas are so big that you can spend hours in them.

If you’re a fan of Star Wars, then Jedi Fallen Order is a must-play without question. It has many references and does a great job at appealing to the fans. And if you’re a fan of video linear action games, then Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is definitely one of the best games you can play!

Pros:

  • In terms of graphics, Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is truly exceptional.
  • The new original characters bring something new to the table which is quite interesting in Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.
  • With an extensive open world in Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, the exploration becomes delightful.
  • The combat system is intriguing and fun to mess around with in Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.
  • A perfect balance between the idea of Jedi strength and a sense of reality is struck through the difficulty level.
  • Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order offers an ingenious new droid that is charming in many ways.

Cons:

  • The main storyline feels mundane and completely forgettable in Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.
  • The parry system can be a little tricky to use specifically during challenging boss battles in Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.
  • Consequential bugs and glitches ruin the immersion of the player.
  • The combat mechanics can be a little irritating sometimes in Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.

Gameplay TypeSurvival Horror

Prey is a first-person shooter video game that takes place in space. We play in an alternate timeline where humankind has reached the stars and has its own orbital stations. You get to play Morgan Yu as he explores the space station Talos I, which is responsible for researching a hostile alien force known as Typhon that possesses physical and psychic powers.

But eventually, the Typhon escapes, and it is up to you to use different weapons and abilities that you can even steal from the Typhon to survive and escape the space station. And the game is no walk in the park; it wants you to always remain on your toes and challenges you in many ways.

The combat feels great, especially when you get the alien abilities, such as the kinetic and telekinesis powers, for yourself. And you get newer stuff by leveling up, and the game ensures that leveling up feels rewarding. But the game definitely encourages you to use your brain throughout the game. Even the low leveled enemies can take you out easily, so you always have to consider how you’ll approach each situation.

In general, if you’re a fan of sci-fi games that incorporate space, aliens, cool weapons, and abilities, then Prey deserves to be part of your PS5 library!

Pros:

  • Prey has an intriguing and one-of-a-kind archaic visual design.

  • One of the best and most hybrid systems.

Cons:

  • The combat system is rather disappointing in Prey.
  • Excessive difficulty escalation in Prey hinders the final quarter of the game.
  • The pacing gets inconsistent.
  • Minor technical issues occur throughout the game which is lackluster in Prey.
  • Prey has an absolute lack of enduring personalities in the main plot.

Ever wondered what it would be like if artificial intelligence and robotics advanced so far that we could have humanlike robots helping out in our day-to-day lives? Well, that is the concept that Detroit Become Human explores and even showcases the consequences of such a world.

Detroit Become Human is an interactive story game where you get to explore the lives of 3 different androids who live totally different lives with their own objectives. Connor, a police android, wants to find out why the androids are becoming deviants. Marcus explores what it feels like to be a deviant and eventually becomes an important personality among them. Whereas Kara just wants to be a loving mother.

All of these characters, in fact, all of the androids, eventually show more emotion than humans, and the game tends to throw a lot of philosophical aspects and modern-era references. And let’s not forget the beautiful soundtracks that accompany such moments!

The story takes you on different quests as you explore the three main characters. At one moment, you can be investigating a murder, and then at another moment, you might be trying to solve some puzzles as another character or trying to pull off a heist as another!

Pros:

  • The narrative is open-ended and baffling in Detroit Become Human which provides an immersive experience throughout the main story.

  • Themes and messages are handled in a hasty manner.
  • Detroit Become Human is not as engaging as some might anticipate.

Gameplay TypeAction RPG

Messing around with time can be quite tricky. In fact, all the games that involve some sort of time tinkering tend to be some of the best sci-fi games, and Deathloop on the PS5 is no exception!

Developed by Arkane, Deathloop is a first-person shooter game that follows Colt, an assassin that is stuck in a time loop. You’re tasked with killing eight different missionaries spread throughout an Island in order to escape the loop. And if you fail to kill all of them by midnight, you’ll be taken to the start and will have to replay and kill all of the targets all over again.

However, going back to the start of the loop is the biggest feature of the game and offers much replayability. All of the progress that you make during the loop before restarting tends to remain. Any hidden doors, secret information, or intel gained during the loop will remain with you, allowing you to use them in the next loop.

Besides just the interesting concept, you’ll have access to some pretty cool sci-fi weapons with their own unique abilities and attachments to upgrade them. And if you don’t want to lose your weapons, you can infuse them, allowing you to retain them in the next loop. You’ll also have personal skills and upgrades, such as teleportation, better jump, faster regeneration, and much more.

All of these aspects combined make for a unique game with really good mechanics. Colt truly feels like an assassin when he performs stealth takedowns. And the game supports the loop mechanic so well that even if you fail in a loop, you still feel like you’ve made meaningful progress!

Pros:

  • The combat system is spectacular and entertaining in Deathloop.
  • In terms of visuals, Deathloop is simply gorgeous.
  • The multiplayer mode is a nice addition to Deathloop.
  • The supernatural abilities are extremely fun to mess around with.
  • Deathloop offers effective utilization of the time loop concept.

Cons:

  • Deathloop gets hugely repetitive during the final parts of the story.
  • Some minor visual bugs occur which is lackluster in Deathloop.
  • Deathloop forces you to use stealth a little too much in some situations, which is not ideal for some players.

Returnal

Release DateApril 30, 2021
Developers & PublishersHousemarque
Gameplay TypeThird-person Roguelike

If you found Deathloop and the concept of a time loop interesting, then you’ll also love Returnal, as it has a similar concept. It is a third-person shooter with elements of roguelike and psychological horror!

You play as Selene Vassos, an astronaut who is looking for the mysterious “White Shadow.” Her journey takes her to the planet known as Atropos, but upon landing, she finds herself stuck in a time loop!

Each time you die, you get sent back to the start, where your ship is. This is quite similar to many roguelike games, such as Hades, where once you die, you have to go through all of the levels again, and that is the same case with Returnal. However, the game does have a halfway point. Once you cross that, you get sent to the start of the halfway point instead of the complete start!

But in terms of gameplay, Returnal does an excellent job of nailing the sci-fi experience. From crazy particle effects, the different alien enemy types, and the various weapons with their own unique perks make for one of the best games in the Sci-fi genre.

It is worth noting that Returnal is not an easy game; it might even be on the verge of being as hard as a SoulsLike game due to how hard it can get at times. Not being hit is highly encouraged by the game as it rewards you with adrenaline, which can lead to buffs such as better vision or faster reloads. And the boss fights can be extremely challenging too!

So, if you’re looking for an alien-infested sci-fi game and just want to slice up your enemies with a space sword, then Returnal is a game worth trying!

Pros:

  • The main story is mesmerizing and full of secrets in Returnal.
  • Returnal offers a compelling rogue-like structure.
  • The bullet-hell combat system is thrilling and interesting.
  • Returnal has some great visuals.

Cons:

  • The main drawback is the lack of a save system in Returnal.
  • The first few sequences of Returnal overstay their welcome.
  • The limited build options can be jarring for some players.

Gameplay TypeFirst-person shooter

Bioshock games are quite old; in fact, they were first released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 generations. Then they came to the next generation in the form of the Bioshock Collection with better graphics. And now, the collection can also be played on the PS5.

Despite being so old, the amazing story mixed with the various gameplay mechanics make it hard not to recommend it in a list of the best PS5 sci-fi games! The collection includes the entire BioShock series, BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite.

All of them have their own stories, with their own different protagonists, plots, and overall atmospheres. The first two games explore the concept of an underwater city, whereas the third game takes you all the way into an airborne city of Columbia. All of the games have an amazing story, with a lot of mystery, memorable characters, and settings.

But besides an engaging story, the gameplay of all BioShock games is memorable. It is a first-person shooter with various abilities. Depending on which game you’re playing, you might have the ability to shoot fireballs, shock enemies, and even the ability to control other humans or machines.

The games also tend to have a unique traversal system, especially BioShock Infinite, where you can use a sky-rail to move around. With different bosses, many sci-fi and mysterious elements, and great gameplay mechanics, the BioShock Collection is worth visiting if you’ve never played a BioShock game!

Pros:

  • The world is immersive and packed with different content to prevail in Bioshock.
  • Bioshock has one of the best visuals and sound designs.
  • The gameplay mechanics are very creative and engaging.
  • Players who adore first-person shooter game style, then they are in for a treat in Bioshock.
  • The narrative is quite impressive and does a spectacular job of keeping the players enrolled throughout the game.
  • All the characters are highly in-depth and show potential development throughout the main story.

Cons:

  • The gameplay may get repetitive after some hours which can be underwhelming in Bioshock.
  • Some technical issues can spoil the overall experience of Bioshock which is lackluster.
  • Bioshock tumbles in the final stages of the plot.
  • Huge frame drops during the final segment can mar the experience.

Release DateMarch 20, 2020

Gameplay TypeFirst-person shooter

Doom Eternal is the fifth entry in the Doom franchise, and it is a sequel to the 2016 Doom. You play as Doomslayer, who is on a quest to end Hell’s consumption of Earth while trying to stop alien Makyr’s plan of exterminating the human race.

The entire Doom series consists of fast-paced gameplay, and that’s no different in Doom Eternal. You get rewarded for taking out enemies as fast as you can. In fact, aggressively engaging with enemies is how you can get more ammo, armor, and even health. So instead of cowering behind cover when your health is low, the game encourages you to go out guns-blazing.

The game further supports aggressive gameplay with weapons that feel extremely satisfying and fun to use. There are many sci-fi weapons like shotguns, cannons, plasma rifles, and even rocket launchers.

Traversal is well refined as you wall-climb, dash around, and swing across bars to reach your enemies. All of these, combined with great-level designs, allow you to pull off unique kills.

In fact, using the arenas to your advantage is a huge part of the game. As the game gets progressively harder, you’ll need to be more strategic with how you kill and in what order you kill your enemies in, such that you get better bonuses that can help you survive!

Doom Eternal is overall a great fast-paced sci-fi game. With many improvements from the previous game, such as newer enemies, better respawn mechanics, and a system that allows you to shoot off enemies’ limbs, disabling them from using their stronger attacks, Doom Eternal is truly the best way to experience a typical Doom game!

Pros:

  • The environment design is unparalleled and breathtaking in Doom Eternal.
  • The story provides a nice balance of wordplay and nostalgia.
  • Doom Eternal offers rapid-fire gameplay at an incredible pace.
  • The diversity in enemies allows you to utilize a variety of tactics and weapon types in Doom Eternal.
  • In terms of visuals, Doom Eternal looks phenomenal.

Cons:

  • Platforming can be problematic for some players in Doom Eternal.
  • Every time the Marauder appears, he completely disrupts the game’s momentum which is extremely frustrating.
  • The initial tutorials in Doom Eternal weaken the overall pace of the main plot.
  • The early several hours of the gameplay are disappointing.

Release DateFebruary 23, 2017

Gameplay TypeAction RPG, Hack and Slash

Nier: Automata is an action RPG that mixes many different elements and sometimes even adds arcade-styled gameplay. In the world of Nier: Automata, there is a war between alien-created machines and human-crafted androids after humans got thrown off Earth and got forced to live on the Moon. Their androids are their last hope of reclaiming Earth.

You play as 2B, one of those androids. Your mission is to take down all of the machines that get in your way. You play in sort of a semi-open-world game with different sections, main quests, side quests, and a lot more.

The game has great real-time combat that includes the typical dodging, dashing, and slashing away at your enemies. You also have a small bot by your side most of the time that can help you perform special moves and also help distract enemies.

Nier: Automata also shakes things up by changing the camera view and throwing you in a different playstyle. For example, there are certain segments of the game where you’re in an epic battle on a rollercoaster, and it turns into a 2D view.

Because the game is an RPG, you will continuously have to upgrade your skills to keep up with the increasingly difficult enemies. And there are many different enemy types in the game to keep you busy.

And let’s not forget the epic boss fights. The bosses have great designs, and the fights have a good balance of difficulty and fun. And certain bosses truly impress you with their scale, especially when they’re accompanied by an amazing soundtrack!

Nier: Automata is really for those players that love RPGs with fast hack-and-slash gameplay. With an interesting story backed by solid gameplay, it’s a must-play!

Pros:

  • Beyond the hack-and-slash combat, the gameplay is exciting in Nier: Automata.
  • The main narrative is engaging and intriguing.
  • Movement mechanics are very well-designed and feels improbable.
  • The combat system is fast-paced and action-based in Nier: Automata.
  • The landscape and atmosphere look awe-inducing.

Cons:

  • The side missions are drab and monotonous in Nier: Automata.
  • The lack of variety in enemy design is truly disappointing.
  • The combat eventually gets repetitive in Nier: Automata.
  • Random invisible walls and poor map design are lackluster in Nier: Automata.
  • Because of the various play-throughs, Nier: Automata’s finale can be a little perplexing.

Release DateFebruary 5, 2016

Gameplay TypeTactical RPG

XCOM 2 is the sequel to 2012’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which served as a reboot of the entire XCOM franchise. The game takes place 20 years after the events of the first game, and you play as a military organization, XCOM, that is trying to fight off an alien invasion. After losing the initial war, XCOM is now a resistance force trying to stop Earth from falling under military dictatorship.

The game has a turn-based combat system mixed with strategy elements where you manage and control different missions and operations that can be found at XCOM’s mobile base. The game also has some great characters that make appearances in cutscenes, and all of the fights just feel like a losing battle.

And the objectives of the game consistently keep you tense by having timed events and also the main doomsday timer. Additionally, the game has some pretty deep objectives. Besides just the main objectives, there are also dark objectives (basically side objectives) that help you in the main objectives too.

There’s also a good amount of stealth in the game. And because you’re just a resistance force against a giant army, the stealth parts showcase the whole struggle against the aliens quite well!

XCOM 2 really is for those players that love tactical games and upgrading their technology and characters to come up with better strategies, making it one of the best tactical and strategy sci-fi games on the PS5. And sometimes, when you lose those special characters, their permanent deaths can actually make you feel a bit of sympathy for all the characters!

If you like XCOM and the way that you work in squads together, then you might like Tomy Clancy’s series. They consist of tactical gameplay with squads, allowing you to play co-op as well.

Pros:

  • The implementation of new stealth mechanics works extremely well in XCOM 2.
  • XCOM 2 does a great job of illustrating cinematic cutscenes that are exceptional.
  • The gameplay is tense and strategic based which doesn’t let the players just mindlessly slash through the game.
  • Numerous command options make every playthrough unique in XCOM 2.
  • Missions are diverse and fluid which keeps the players invested throughout the game.

Cons:

  • Sometimes enemies violate tactical directives which can be troublesome for some players.
  • Constant bugs and glitches are underwhelming in XCOM 2.
  • Views don’t always deliver essential information which is lackluster.
  • The loading times can take notoriously long to complete in XCOM 2.

Release DateMarch 25, 2022
Developers & PublishersGearbox Games
Gameplay TypeFirst-person shooter RPG

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a first-person shooter that has many elements of a typical RPG game. Developed by Gearbox, it is a spin-off of the well-known series, Borderlands. In fact, it is inspired by Tiny Tina’s Assault on the Dragon DLC and is a sequel to it!

The game is set within Tiny Tina’s tabletop game which is basically like Dragon and Dungeons. In fact, it is slightly different from a typical Borderlands Game as it is a unique mix of a sci-fi fantasy world with an old-time period.

As soon as you dive in, you get to create your own character through a fairly detailed character maker. You can also choose a different background and class, which can lead to having different hero stats. The game actually has a unique way of approaching and finding new missions and areas. Because you’re essentially playing a top-down game, you get to explore an overworld in that top-down manner.

Most of your missions will consist of shooting up the place and just undergoing epic gunfights or exploring Dungeons. And there is a lot of variety in the weapons in the game. From different magical elements to rarities like legendary weapons, there’s so much to discover and play around with.

As the game has RPG elements, XP farming is a huge part of the game, so you can level up and get better gear as well. But in general, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a typical Borderlands game with many improvements and fun elements!

Pros:

  • The character creation system is distinctive and lets you create your own character of your desire in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.
  • Close combat attacks give the Borderlands premise some enjoyable gameplay diversity.
  • The gun mechanics and casting spells are extremely intriguing and inventive.
  • The environment is high in detail and keeps the player immersed throughout the campaign.

Cons:

  • The UI menu is a total mess when it comes to looting which is disappointing.
  • There is a lot of narration in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands that you must endure in order to progress through the game.
  • The final pieces of the game are incoherent and leave the players with a plethora of unanswered questions.

Gameplay TypeAction-adventure

Control is an action-adventure game with quite a lot of trippy sci-fi concepts. The game revolves around a secretive US government agency known as the Federal Bureau of Control. The FBC is involved in experimenting and researching different phenomena that defy the laws of reality.

You get to play Jesse Faden, the new director of the bureau, and you’re on a quest to discover the disappearance of your brother. Your search leads you to the Oldest House, which is the headquarters of the paranormal stuff in FBC. However, a deadly enemy known as the Hiss escapes, and now you need to defeat it before it completely corrupts reality.

Most of your enemies in the game will be the corrupted beings that have taken over many areas of the Oldest House. Your objective is to clean up these areas by reaching the checkpoints and taking out any enemies and bosses present there.

Shooting feels really responsive, has great sound effects, and there are different enough modes for you to play around with without it feeling too repetitive. You’ll have access to a supernatural pistol that can get upgraded throughout the game, allowing it to turn into a shotgun, have a longer range, and even act as a submachine gun.

You’ll also have access to many abilities yourself that you can unlock more of throughout the entire game. Levitation, telekinesis to throw rocks or create shields, and a forceful push are just some of the many unlockable supernatural skills.

In general, Control is one of the best story-based sci-fi games on PS5. From the great graphics, amazing cinematics, and fleshed-out characters to solid gameplay and many interesting weapons, you can’t go wrong with playing Control!

Pros:

  • The environment, lighting, and visuals in Control are on top of the shelf.
  • The art direction is unpaired in Control.
  • Control offers a distinctive combat system that blends gunplay and superpowers which is intriguing.
  • Fascinating fundamental enigma.

Cons:

  • Sometimes the difficulty level spikes resulting in various bosses being extremely troublesome in Control.
  • The level design is great but the map gets incoherent which can confuse some players in Control.
  • The narrative is not engaging enough to keep a player enrolled throughout the game.
  • The ending leaves the players baffled which is underwhelming in Control.

Gameplay TypeFirst-person shooter MMOG

The original Destiny had a huge diehard fandom. Players would spend hours grinding away, trying to get the best guns, loot, and simply level up. Then came Destiny 2 with some great improvements to the original game.

The game consists of a PvP and PvE mode, with an interesting story. The story mode of the game has some great cinematic cutscenes with typical Sci-Fi characters. The villain doesn’t seem too generic and has actual motivations.

And the game has some pretty great missions where many chaotic events are happening, even during the gameplay sections. And in every area, there’s a lot of possibility for exploration. You can enter secret areas, find and scan new items, and even encounter NPCs that give you side quests.

You’ll be shooting a lot in the game, and it’s safe to say that the game doesn’t disappoint with its shooting mechanics. Each shot feels powerful, and there’s a noticeable difference between each weapon. But Destiny is more about the endgame content and the PvP modes. The game doesn’t disappoint as it has many endgame activities, such as raids, and there are enough PvP modes to keep you engaged.

The developers also keep the game updated by adding new items such as the Exotic Armor, new events, or things like Trials Rewards. The entire Destiny 2 community is strong, and it’s one of the best sci-fi grinding games for the PS5!

Pros:

  • The mechanics in Destiny 2 are significantly polished compared to previous titles in the series.
  • The open-world design is a fully fleshed-out RPG that can accommodate any experience you choose to have in Destiny 2.
  • The navigation system is well designed that massively helps provide a sense of direction and guidance for new players.
  • Public events are refined compared to Destiny 1. They are rewarding primarily if you have their heroic versions.

Cons:

  • The new weapon types and subclasses might not be everyone’s cup of tea in Destiny 2.
  • Progress toward the endgame is hazy and unclear in Destiny 2.
  • It is unclear whether or not you may abandon quests and then reclaim them later since they eat up your inventory space which is lackluster.

Release DateOctober 25, 2019
Developers & PublishersObsidian Entertainment
Gameplay TypeAction RPG

The Outer Worlds is brought to you by the same developers as Fallout New Vegas, and a lot of that shows in the way that the game is. It is a first-person action RPG that truly nails the RPG experience.

You get to create your own character at the start, and the plot is that you used to be part of a space colony, but after some tragic event, you get left out in space and fall into a cryostasis. After an ally wakes you up, you find yourself in a new colony that is subjected to a lot of conspiracy and mystery that could potentially cause the colony to collapse.

And from there onwards, you’re free to explore different planets and undergo main and side quests. In fact, there is a lot of content in the game regarding quests. Each mission is well thought out, and the multiple dialogue options lead to different branches of the story.

The combat in the game feels like typical RPG combat. But there are a couple of cool sci-fi weapons for you to check out. The game adds a unique concept of time dilation in combat. Because your character was in cryostasis for so long, they can experience time in a slower manner, allowing them to target specific limbs of enemies. And there are a lot of enemies, from different creatures to robots; everything is out to get you!

Because of all these aspects, The Outer Worlds truly a mesmerizing RPG Sci-Fi games that you can try out on the PS5!

Pros:

  • The RPG mechanics are strong and fluid in The Outer Worlds.
  • Players have the freedom to choose multiple playstyles in order to progress through the game which is quite exciting.
  • The upgrade system is vast and intriguing in The Outer Worlds.
  • Each character is well-represented and has a lot of depth.
  • The narrative is well-written and extremely engaging in The Outer Worlds.

Cons:

  • Whenever you traverse to another planet, you have to sit through various loading screens which is annoying in The Outer Worlds.
  • The companion cutscenes are unsettling in the main campaign.
  • Inspecting the Inventory Menu can be a little challenging in The Outerworlds.
  • The combat system feels unhinged and clunky.

Gameplay TypeFirst-person Action RPG

Brought to you by the same developers as the Witcher series, Cyberpunk 2077 is an action-adventure RPG set in a futuristic cyberpunk setting with crazy stuff like flying cars. You get to explore the open world of Night City as your own custom mercenary character, V.

The main plot is that our main character, V, gets a cybernetic implant inside him that starts to overwrite his body, memories, and personality of a dead iconic rock star, Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves).

Only V can perceive him, and the two must work together to find a way to reverse the overwriting process. But besides just that, the game doesn’t shy away from exploring topics such as capitalism, discussing the meaning of life, and what it means to be a human.

Coming on to the gameplay, there were way too many glitches to keep track of when the game initially launched. In fact, it was considered one of the worst games on launch. But the developers released many updates to make gameplay feel a lot smoother, and it actually feels pretty good now!

Additionally, the game is an RPG, so you can explore many of those gameplay aspects, such as leveling up to get perks related to hacking, combat, crafting, and a lot more. But many fans and critics have often reported that the RPG elements aren’t as prominent as in some other games.

But in general, if you’re looking for a great open-world RPG sci-fi game on the PS5 with futuristic weapons, interesting cars, and sci-fi-looking people, Cyberpunk 2077 can be one of your best options out there!

Pros:

  • In terms of graphics, Cyberpunk 2077 is quite impressive.

  • Hand-to-Hand combat is a bit tedious in Cyberpunk 2077.
  • Minor glitches may appear throughout the game which can be frustrating.

Gameplay TypeAction-adventure survival game

There was much hype for No Man’s Sky for its initial launch. Fans were expecting mindblowing sci-fi space exploration games on PS4 and other consoles (PS5 didn’t exist then). But the game did not deliver; it felt incomplete, rushed, and really empty.

The main concept is that you’re an alien humanoid space explorer that starts off on a random procedurally generated planet. From there, you try to find resources to get your ship working so that you can explore all of the other procedurally generated planets out there.

Exploration actually feels rewarding as there are lots of materials to be scanned and new areas to be explored, whether it be on the surface or underwater. And each planet tends to have its own little quirk and environmental events, whether it be sandstorms or erupting volcanoes!

With lots of base-building elements and a proper currency system to purchase materials, crafting and trading feel meaningful. You can have your own planet dedicated to a base with multiple ships and vehicles that you can use to move around.

If you were initially burned by No Man’s Sky or never even gave it a chance to begin with, then you definitely need to try it out. From improved multiplayer, more exploration, better graphics, and too many updates to keep track of, the game has turned into something different!

Pros:

  • The open world is immense and full of in No Man’s Sky.
  • A number of different unique ways in which a player can progress in No Man’s Sky and appreciate the journey.
  • The tech aspect of No Man’s Sky is quite impressive which inspires an adventure that feels genuine.
  • No Man’s Sky offers boundless variety.

Cons:

  • The inventory and item management is extremely lackluster in No Man’s Sky which is irksome.
  • TH UI is pointless in No Man’s Sky.
  • The gameplay mechanics can get redundant after a while in No Man’s Sky.
  • An abundance of bugs and glitches especially when playing with several people.

Gameplay Type“Stranded” Action Game

Death Stranding is a post-apocalypse sci-fi game that you’ll either love or hate, depending on what type of player you are. An event known as the “Death Stranding” caused invisible creatures known as the Beached Things to roam the lands of the Earth and cause destruction everywhere.

These creatures originate from the “Beach,” which is said to be the link between death and the afterlife. If these creatures consume a living human being, it causes a catastrophic explosion that leads to a Timefall rain that ages and deteriorates anything that it touches.

In this post-apocalyptic world, you play as Sam Porter Bridges, who is essentially a courier that is tasked with delivering vital items to different colonies and reconnecting them to a wireless communication network!

There are many factors to consider while making the delivery. You need to ensure you’ve strapped the packages in a balanced manner without being too overweight. And when you’re traveling across harsh terrains, you need to consider every single step that you take. Otherwise, you can fall, and all of your delivery items can get destroyed, leading to many consequences.

You can also get vehicles, but because the terrain is usually so unforgiving, they mostly feel useless. The game also has combat and gunplay to help you defend yourself from enemies that want to steal your loot.

Furthermore, the game has a huge focus on community-driven gameplay. That means that the world is connected by many players. Anything that you leave behind can be seen by other players as well. These features lead to people helping out others by leaving ladders, building roads, or even leaving signs warning of incoming dangers.

Pros:

  • Death Stranding offers a startling and gloomy world to explore for players.
  • A truly clever social interaction system.
  • The characters are peculiar, complex, and intriguing in Death Stranding.
  • Each mechanic in Death Stranding is a great complement to the others.

Cons:

  • Some of the boss battles can be irritating in Death Stranding.
  • Several storylines are still unresolved which is lackluster.
  • The narrative of Death Stranding dabbles itself a little bit.

The entire Fallout series is the pioneer of sci-fi RPG games, and you can play some of them on the PS5 as well! There are many Fallout games out there, but Fallout 4 is one of the most popular games in the series.

The story takes place ten years after the events of the previous game, Fallout 3. It’s the year 2297, and “The Great War” caused massive nuclear destruction across the US. You play as the “Sole Survivor” who comes out of a cryogenic stasis from an underground fallout shelter.

You get to create your own character. You’re on a quest to find your missing child in the area known as Commonwealth, which is basically set in Boston. The new setting is a refresher from the previous Fallout games. There’s a lot more color, flowing rivers, and a cloudy blue sky!

As the game is an RPG, there is much focus on exploring, talking to people, discovering new places, finding new items, scavenging for materials like aluminium, crafting, completing missions, and killing lots of enemies!

And there are actually many enemies that you can encounter, such as raiders, super mutants, and even animals. You can deal with them with many weapons that are supported by amazing mechanics. The shooting feels good, especially with the VATS system that lets you pick off different parts of enemies.

Moreover, crafting is a huge and deep mechanic in the game. Even gun crafting is so deep that you can make more than a hundred different variations of a single gun by slapping on different parts, changing out items, and a lot more.

If you’re a fan of the Fallout series, then Fallout 4 is a no-brainer. And if you’re looking for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi game with lots of base building and RPG elements and a great story with a properly voiced protagonist, then you should certainly try Fallout 4!

Pros:

  • The character development in Fallout 4 is exquisite.
  • A huge variety of content is at your disposal which will keep you on your toes in Fallout 4.
  • The combat system is fluid and provides a great experience to both new and seasoned players.
  • The open world in Fallout 4 is immersive and diverse in variety.

Cons:

  • The graphics are not the best in Fallout 4.
  • Fallout 4 has minimal role-playing and too basic dialogue which is disappointing.
  • Minor bugs and glitches occur throughout the game.
  • Poor mission pacing, a shortage of interesting NPCs, and repetitious battle settings make the narrative and objectives uninteresting in Fallout 4.

Gameplay TypeAction-adventure RPG

Mass Effect is a series containing three different games, with the first one being released way back in 2007. All of these games are based on galactic wars in a typical action RPG with lots of dialogue and choices that can affect the story.

You play as Commander Shepard, your custom character, who is essentially an elite human soldier on a quest to fight against Reapers, a highly advanced machine race. On his mission, he tries to unite all of the galactic community in taking down these Reapers.

Along the way, you’ll have to make many important decisions that can affect not only what happens to you but the fate of many other characters and communities.

As for the gameplay, it has typical elements of an RPG shooter. You have different abilities and a skill tree to improve them. The over-the-shoulder gunplay is quite accurate as you take out different enemies. You can take cover to avoid taking damage, perform melee attacks, or even send out combat drones.

Mass Effect is a really popular trilogy, and if one hasn’t experienced it or just wants to experience it all over again, The Legendary Edition truly is the best way to experience it. Textures have greatly improved, lighting is a lot better, there’s more detail to models, and just overall better graphics and FPS.

Furthermore, there have been some significant changes to combat, especially in the first game. The enemies have better AI, there’s better aim assist and lock-on, dedicated melee buttons, and the stats of the weapons have been balanced as well. Even bosses have been adjusted to avoid frustration while also offering an adequate challenge.

So, if you want to live out a sci-fi experience as a space cop trying to keep the milky way safe, then Mass Effect: The Legendary Edition is the best and definitive way to experience the game!

Pros:

  • Mass Effect Legendary Edition is an enhanced version of the original game.
  • The combat system is engaging.
  • The storyline is very gripping and keeps the player regaled throughout the campaign.
  • The cutscenes are heavily polished.

Cons:

  • Many of the dialogues and movements during cutscenes feel uneven and cluttered.
  • The design of the buildings is one of the many reused elements in the side missions.

If you’re a fan of games that are based on post-nuclear settings, such as Fallout or STALKER, then Chernobylite might be right up your alley. It is a sci-fi survival game with elements of stealth and action adventure.

You play as Igor Khymyuk, who is desperately looking for his fiancée. The game is set in the Chornobyl Exclusion zone and is directly based on the Chornobyl disaster, with certain fictional changes. Wormholes, radiations, and monsters make for an interesting sci-fi plot that sometimes makes you question your insanity, literally.

The more enemies you face, the more people you kill or witness getting killed, all adding up to your sanity levels. And when things get too out of hand, you even start hallucinating! And the area is filled with enemies that certainly don’t want you around, whom you need to kill to survive.

And you can approach combat in multiple ways. Of course, you’ll have access to different weapons and guns with their own unique sci-fi twist to them. But because it is a survival game, you’ll often find yourself running out of ammo. Then, in that case, you can rely on stealth!

Like many modern games, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, the semi-open world of Chernobylite is progressive. Levels and different objectives are split between day and night cycles. If you love survival games that truly make you feel like all resources are important, then Chernobylite is one of the best survival sci-fi games that you can try out right now!

Pros:

  • The sci-fi narrative is intriguing in Chernobylite.
  • The environment is extremely well done in Chernobylite.
  • Chernobylite offers some spectacular art direction.
  • The survival gameplay is addictive and well-structured in terms of balancing in Chernobylite.
  • Chernobylite provides a smooth experience throughout the game.

Cons:

  • The AI in Chernobylite gets sloppy sometimes which is lackluster.
  • Chernobylite has a lot of bugs and glitches on the console version. It needs to be optimized in order to enjoy the game to its fullest.
  • The character development in Chernobylite is not strong enough to keep the audience engaged throughout the game.
  • In order to progress the storyline, missions in Chernobylite get repetitive and uninteresting.
  • The combat system does not have a hip-firing feature in Chernobylite.

If you’re a fan of Metro games in general, then you won’t be disappointed with Metro Exodus. It has all the elements of a good Metro game, with a few changes that might’ve seemed odd at the start but work quite well.

In terms of the story, the game takes place after the events of Metro 2023 and Metro: Last Night. This time around, Artyom is on a quest of trying to find other human survivors outside Moscow and on the surface. His hunt leads him onboard a train. After things go drastically wrong, without giving too many spoilers, Artyom embarks on a new journey to right his wrongs.

Most of the time, you’ll only have one objective, and when things are tense, there will definitely be big action pieces, lots of scripted moments, and plenty of suspense. But sometimes, the game will have some relatively quiet moments for you to enjoy. Or areas where you can explore, do certain side tasks such as exploring a cave to find items to upgrade your skills.

The word of Metro Exodus is pretty great as well. With Day and Night cycles and different weather seasons that even affect enemies, there’s plenty of variety and stuff to keep you engaged, and it makes for some good pacing as well.

The gameplay, different settings, and the horrifying moments in tight hallways with different monsters make for some memorable and scary moments. If that sounds like a game that you might enjoy, then Metro Exodus might be the best sci-fi game that you’re looking for, especially on the PS5, with overall improvements.

Pros:

  • Despite the genre clichés, the world-building in Metro Exodus is excellent and the stories are compelling altogether.
  • The weapon customization and crafting system are solid in Metro Exodus.
  • Metro Exodus is simultaneously dazzling and captivating.
  • You feel more connected to the group and the voyage thanks to charming characters and genuine interactions in Metro Exodus.
  • Metro Exodus offers a satisfying single-player first-person campaign.

Cons:

  • Even after encouraging stealth gameplay, Metro Exodus enforces frontal fights with extremely challenging bosses.
  • Open sandbox zones can be challenging to explore and a little barren in Metro Exodus.
  • Artyom doesn’t speak throughout gameplay; only during load screens in Metro Exodus.

If you want a break from all the hectic sci-fi games that are either extremely action-packed, make you stress about resources, or simply try to scare you, then Stray is the game that you need. It is one of those games that you can play after a long day to relax.

Stray isn’t exactly a sci-fi game, but its entire vibe and atmosphere are quite fitting for the genre. At its core, Stray is an adventure game but with a slight twist. You play as a “Stray” Cat stuck in an underground cyberpunk-styled city after getting separated from its family.

Throughout your journey, you can play however you want and pretty much do whatever a cat can because there are many things Stray gets right about cats. You can scratch surfaces, do puzzles, and even find stuff like plants and cassettes.

Additionally, with nimble movements, you can easily parkour, fit through tight gaps and simply get to places that no human can. In fact, it feels refreshing to play as a different character than the traditional bulky characters.

From sleeping on rooftops, and collecting items, to just being silly by getting a paper bag stuck on your head, there’s so much fun in the game. Unfortunately, it’s not as long as typical games, and you’ll finish the story quite quickly, even if you’re exploring every nook and cranny. But if you’re looking for the best relaxing sci-fi games on the PS5, Stray is a great option.

Pros:

  • The exploration and interaction element of Stray is exquisite.
  • In terms of visuals, Stray is simply phenomenal.
  • The level design is eye-catching and sophisticated in Stray.

  • The sci-fi storyline is intriguing and well-written in Stray.

Cons:

  • Sometimes the cat is unable to interact with various things which can be annoying in Stray.
  • The jump mechanic is responsive to surroundings that are frustrating in Stray.
  • The difficulty level scales up in random situations in Stray.
  • Some aspects of Stray are not complete and could have been polished.

If you played Marvel’s Avengers, then you most likely were disappointed and didn’t consider giving Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy a chance because it might’ve gone down the same dark path. But miraculously, Square Enix pulled through and actually delivered not just a good Marvel game but a really good sci-fi game as well!

Based on, and quite similar to, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, you play as Peter Quill / Star-Lord, who pretty much acts as the leader of the guardians of the galaxy. The group consists of iconic characters; Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax! And together, you go on different adventures as you progress through a well-written linear experience!

The gameplay and the overall game feel a lot like other single-player cinematic games, such as Uncharted or Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, as you go from area to area while having big, scripted action pieces in between. Additionally, the gameplay has many aspects, such as combat, traversal, puzzle solving, teamwork, and a lot more.

Besides just combat, the game also focuses on puzzles and exploring beautifully crafted and extremely detailed areas. In fact, the Guardians of the Galaxy has certain sci-fi areas that are just amazing to witness in a PS5 game. And even in puzzle solving, you can, and sometimes must, use your teammates to either complete a task while you perform some other action.

The story is also a big highlight of the game. It has a lot of dialogue, and if you were concerned about it being too childish or awkward, then worry not. The game has many serious and emotional moments at times, making for a great overall story!

Pros:

  • Guardian of The Galaxy has a strong storyline.
  • The combat system is extremely distinctive, primarily when using it with various powers in Guardian of The Galaxy.
  • The cast of characters in Guardian of The Galaxy is breathtaking.
  • The soundtrack is mesmerizing.

Cons:

  • Some chapters are stretched out which affects the pacing of Guardian of The Galaxy.
  • Countless bugs and glitches ruin the experience of Guardian of The Galaxy.
  • The environment design is not polished well.
  • In some situations, you are unable to make important decisions which are disappointing in Guardian of The Galaxy.

Release DateFebruary 1, 2022
Developers & PublishersDontnod Entertainment
Gameplay TypeInteractive story game

One of the most popular things that sci-fi games mess around with is time. Although in most of the games, you’re stuck in a time loop, in Life is Strange, you get to control time! The game is an interesting mixture of puzzle-solving and typical episodic storytelling games.

You play as Max Caulfield, who is attending Blackwell Academy in hopes of becoming a great photographer. After getting a bizarre dream that consisted of a catastrophic storm that could destroy the entire, she soon starts noticing weird things. And after a tragic event, she eventually realizes that she has the power to rewind time.

From there, you get to explore the different teenage dramas in the academy as you meet different characters, friends, and even some rivals. You also get reunited with your best friend Chloe, who is a big part of the game and even has a sequel dedicated to her in the remastered version.

Most of the gameplay consists of you roaming around and exploring different areas. There’s a lot of dialogue in the game, and each action and dialogue that you choose can affect the story and, at times, even put you in life-or-death situations! Additionally, there are many puzzles in the game that require you to use your rewind abilities in unique ways to problem-solve.

But the story is what makes Life is Strange so amazing. Max is a great character, and seeing her go from just a shy teen who wants to take good photos to become someone who has to deal with her unique powers while surviving in her academy keeps you hooked on the story at all times.

Even the supporting characters and the different conspiracies in the game are well thought-out! That, paired with the beautiful soundtrack that kicks in at the right moments, leaves you with a masterpiece of a game! So, if you’re looking a sci-fi story game on the PS5, then Life is Strange Remastered is worth trying out.

Pros:

  • Facial animations are a step up including lighting and the character’s hair which appear more lifelike in Life is Strange Remastered.
  • The storyline is extremely engaging and well-written.
  • The voice acting and cast of characters are solid and intriguing in Life is Strange Remastered.
  • All characters are charming and have a decent amount of depth.

Cons:

When one imagines sci-fi games, hacking is one of the first few things that come to mind. Hacking through doors, accessing civilians’ information, and just causing mayhem through hacking seems like a great concept for a sci-fi game. Well, the entire Watch Dogs series takes that idea and incorporates it into some really good games.

There are three different games in the Watch Dogs franchise, all equally good. But as Watch Dogs Legion is one of the most recent games, we’ll be discussing that. The game takes a departure from typical storytelling and doesn’t let you play as just one character, but in fact, lets you take control of a legion of different characters or operatives.

You can recruit and play as literally anyone that you see on the streets after you complete certain missions and tasks for them. And once you have the character, you’ll get access to their different attributes. For example, one might be a master of disguise, whereas the other characters that you have might be better at fist-fights, stealth, or could be efficient with using certain weapons!

And when it comes to sci-fi elements, the game has a lot of them. Watch Dogs Legion is set in a futuristic London, so you’ll get to witness different types of vehicles, a more futuristic city design, and bleeding-edge technology such as giant surveillance drones.

With a detailed open world and lots of weapons, cars, and characters to explore, there’s so much chaos that you can spread in Watch Dogs Legion!

Pros:

  • Players are able to get right into the open world of Watch Dogs Legion without worrying about the linearity of the storyline.
  • In Watch Dogs Legion, players can obtain tech points from the environment and use them to purchase new weapons and abilities. To encourage players to explore and find more tech points, this is a terrific reward system.
  • Characters can change their outfit anywhere in Watch Dogs Legion, which is another fantastic aspect of the game’s gear. It can be done without returning to HQ or looking for a locker.
  • Getting ahold of Cargo Drones in Watch Dogs Legion can prove useful in many ways.

Cons:

  • Overall, the graphics quality is not particularly stunning in Watch Dogs Legion.
  • Watch Dogs Legion is the most glitchy game that Ubisoft has ever created.
  • Despite being a late-generation PS4 game, it takes forever on loading screens in Watch Dogs Legion.
  • Character development is non-existent in the storyline of Watch Dogs Legion.
  • The main plot is awful in Watch Dogs Legion.

Gameplay TypeAction RPG, Stealth, Shooter

Humans with artificial organs, augmentations that allow you to become a killing machine, and an entire cyberpunk-styled city literally scream sci-fi. And these are all of the things that Deus Ex Mankind Divided offers! In fact, all of the Deus Ex games are some of the best RPG sci-fi games out there, but Mankind Divided is the latest and is available on the PS5 too!

Following the events of the Deus Ex: Human Revolution, humans and augmented beings (humans with artificial organs) are segregated due to a catastrophic event that caused augs to start attacking regular humans.

You get to play in 2029 as Adam Jenson, who acts as a double agent for the hacker group Juggernaut Collective. Their goal is to expose the Illuminati, who might be behind the Aug Incident that occurred two years prior. Because Adam Jenson is an augmented being himself, he has access to many weapons, gadgets, and a lot more that lets you experience elements of a first-person shooter, stealth, and action RPG all at once!

And the game has a lot of content to offer. You can complete main quests and side quests, look for upgrades, and much more. And all of these activities tie nicely together and really give a good sense of the type of world that you’re playing in.

Without a doubt, Deus Ex Mankind Divided will give you all of the elements of a sci-fi game and will keep you hooked for hours on end.

Pros:

  • Deus Ex mainly focuses on the stealth element which is eye candy for veteran players of this game.
  • The addition of new power skills potentially makes the combat more fun and distinctive in Deus Ex.
  • In terms of graphics, Deus Ex is a decent-looking game.
  • The main plot is immersive and keeps the player engaged throughout the game.
  • Players have the freedom of exploring different locations in Deus Ex.

Cons:

  • The storyline can be complex for players who have little knowledge of early titles in this franchise.
  • The combat system is not intriguing enough and is awful in Deus Ex.

Gameplay TypeSurvival Horror

Most sci-fi games tend to be focused on either combat or adventure. But Alien Isolation takes a different route and mixes elements of survival horror and stealth while also throwing you onto a space station!

Based on the 1979 movie, Alien, you play as the daughter of the movie’s protagonist. She’s on a quest to find out what happened to her mother 30 years ago while also exploring the Space Station Sevastopol.

But soon, you discover that you’re not alone on the space station, and there’s a hostile alien and other enemies out to get you! Therefore, throughout the game, your main objective will be to avoid the big bad alien while also trying to escape the space station.

The game is a nice blend between stealth and horror as you try to predict the alien’s movements as you go from point to point, completing objectives that’ll help you get back to Earth. However, avoiding the alien is not a piece of cake, as it can detect even the slightest noise or disturbance that you create.

And the fact that you can’t kill the Alien makes it even more challenging and emphasizes stealth. However, you do have access to certain firearms, such as revolvers, shotguns, and even flamethrowers.

You can use these to take out lesser enemies that also roam on the space station. But more importantly, you can hold off the Alien, even for a bit. So, if you’re a fan of sci-fi games that are set in space and also feature stealth, then Alien: Isolation might be the best game for you on the PS5!

Pros:

  • Alien: Isolation is an excellent representation of the original film.
  • Alien: Isolation is a very lengthy game.
  • In terms of graphics and sound design, Alien Isolation is on top of the shelf in contrast to other games of this genre.
  • The lighting is splendid which enriches the horror element of Alien: Isolation.
  • The stealth gameplay is intriguing in Alien: Isolation.

Cons:

  • Several sequences of Alien: Isolation are a little too stretched which impacts the pacing of the game. This is tiresome for many players.
  • The AI alien can get irritating to deal with sometimes in Alien: Isolation.
  • The animation of some characters gets stiff in some situations in Alien: Isolation.
  • The combat system of Alien: Isolation is sluggish which is lackluster.

There are truly a lot of great sci-fi games out there. In fact, there are way too many to keep track of. If we missed one of your favorite games, then worry not; it might be equally, if not even better, than the games on our list of the best sci-fi games on the PS5. At the end of the day, if you have fun playing a game, then it truly is one of the bests!
