Cult Of The Lamb: BEST Base Building Guide

This guide discusses the best building strategies along with various other tips to keep your overall progression balanced.

Cult of the Lamb is the latest addition to the rouge-like genre, but what sets it apart from the rest of the rouge-likes in the market is its city-building aspect. You can manage a base while partaking in your usual dungeon runs. In today’s guide, we explain the base-building aspect as well as give you tips on how to build the best base in Cult of the Lamb.

Key Takeaways

There are multiple pointers that you need to follow in order to make the Best Base in Cult of the Lamb.

  • Ensure cult members have resting places with sleeping bags for everyone.
  • Regularly fertilize crops to increase yield and provide more food for the cult.
  • Construct a Stone Mine and Lumberyard early to ensure a continuous resource supply.
  • Upgrade Outhouses to maintain cult members’ health and prevent disease spread.
  • Prioritize building essential structures like Shrine, Cooking Pot, and Temple for cult activities.

This is definitely one of the highlights of Cult of the Lamb, where two completely opposite genres are merged together, without one taking the spotlight from the other. Both aspects are highly refined and strike a perfect balance in the overall experience.

Building The Best Base In Cult Of The Lamb

While the dungeon crawling part of Cult of the Lamb is great, giving equal attention to the game’s other half, the base building part, is extremely important too. The base building part of Cult of the Lamb is just as refined as the combat part.

There are a lot of things you need to know before starting out because building the best base in Cult of the Lamb requires proper attention and care. So, without further ado, let’s discuss how to build the best base in Cult of the Lamb.

Sleeping Bags

Shortly after arriving in your village, you will have to follow a tutorial, where Ratau pretty much goes over all you need to know from building to management. After carrying out his instructions and building a couple of essential buildings like the Shrine, Cooking Pot, and Temple, you will be given the freedom to manage your village the way you see fit.

The very first step in building the best base in Cult of the Lamb is making sure there is a resting place for your Cult. For this, you need to build Sleeping Bags for all the cult members.  The cost of each Sleeping Bag is around 5 Lumber & 10 coins, and adventures during the tutorial will have left you with enough money for this expense.

Plots For Farming

Crops

Obviously, the second thing you need is a Farm Plot that can grow food to feed your cult as well as grow other products that can help you not only in your dungeon crawl but also in completing various side quests. Without this, you will have a lot of difficulty in management.

Farm Plots cost two coins and five grass each. Build at least six Farm Plots at the start and plant Camellia seeds in 2 of them and plant Berry seeds in the rest.

Fertilizing The Crops

Manual labor

The third step in building the best base in Cult of the Lamb is fertilizing the crops, especially the ones that provide food. Crops can be fertilized through poop, and the higher the cult count, the bigger will be the amount of poop you will have.

excrete
Waste left behind by your cultists

So there is no point in holding on to the poop, just spread it as much as you can and fertilize your crops. Fertilizing the crops will produce a higher yield, which means more food for your cult. Eventually, you will be able to build a Fertilizer Silo, which will let your villages do the fertilizing part automatically, but for now, you have to fertilize your crops manually.

Another important tip we want to give before we move on to the next heading is that make sure to build your Outhouse near your crop field. Now, this might not be a big deal for a lot of people, but there is a huge utility to this.

Building an Outhouse near the crop field will allow you to fetch the poop and spread it on your crops quickly. Having an Outhouse built away from the crop field will increase the time it takes you to collect and spread poop, which in turn will discourage you from doing the dirty work.

Body Pit & Farming Bundle

Choice between buildings
Building Body Put or a Farming Bundle

Before the second tier becomes available and things really get rolling, you have a choice to pick between either Body Pit & Farming Bundle. Frankly, at that point in the game, you don’t need any of the two, but it’ll be useful to build either of them ahead of time.

Body Pit is useful in case your farmers get exhausted or sick in a very short time, This isn’t usual at the start of the game, but if you somehow managed to exhaust them, Body Pit is an essential building in that scenario.

Normally most people will opt for Farming Bundle instead, which can help you boost your agriculture operations but then again, your agriculture operations need to be large enough too for the Farming Bundle to really do its trick.

Solving Wood Problem

Cutting Trees
Cutting down the tree for some wood

Solving the wood problem is a significant step in building the best in Cult of the Lamb. Getting wood early on in Cult of the Lamb is quite a challenge. At the same time, it’s a necessary early game resource, so what you have to do is look out for wood during your Dungeon Crawl because you won’t gain enough from the trees in your village.

This is not the most efficient way to fix the wood issue, but it’s a quick fix you can use early in the game. Additionally, build a missionary in your village as soon as possible. What it does is that it allows you to send your cult members in search of various resources, including wood.

Cult of the Lamb is a game filled with vicious monsters crawling everywhere, so there is a chance you might lose a follower, but at the same time, wood is just as important and much harder to get than a follower. After spending some time in the game, one of the first buildings you will unlock is a Lumberyard.

Lumberjack
Lumberyard will automatically generate wood later on in the game

As evident from the name, building the Lumberyard will pretty much solve your wood problem, and after placing a couple of them in your village, there is a high chance you will never run out of wood again. In addition to wood, Lumberyard also provides you with a lot of other great resources as well.

Building The Stone Mine

Stone

Unlocking three of the four buildings in tier one will allow you to spend Devotion points to upgrade the Shrine. This will, in turn, allow the shrine to store more Devotion as well as unlock more advanced buildings.

As we have mentioned above, finding and gathering wood is a tedious process, but it is a process that exists. There is no method for getting your hands on stone (which is another great early game resource) without the stone mine.

Granted that in higher levels, you will be able to farm stone, but it’s a resource you need early, so make sure you build the Stone Mine as soon as you get the option instead of anything else. Once the stone and wood start rolling in, you will be in a great economic position to build the best base in Cult of the Lamb.

The Lighthouse

One of the first side areas you unlock in Cult of the Lamb is Pilgrim’s Passage. You can go fishing there, but that’s not what we are interested in here. There is an essential quest you can complete in Pilgrim’s Passage called “The Lighthouse”. To begin the quest, visit the keepers of the light and provide them with wood. This action will open two stores in the area.

One is a Tarot Card shop, and the other is a Decor shop. The quest isn’t done yet because there is a secret part 2 to this quest as well. Visit the keepers again and give them 25 crystals. The crystals can be mostly found in the Anchor Deep dungeon, primarily by smashing some crystals in its encounter area.

After you have the desired amount, go back to the keepers, give them 25 crystals, and you will be rewarded with a new Follower Form.

Smashing Objects

Destroying
Smashing objects for resources

The smashing of objects is a simple yet effective method of getting our hands on a lot of different types of resources, from normal ones to rarer ones. You don’t need to do it after you are halfway through the game, but for the early game, this is a crucial tip.

Faster weapons make things easier, but any weapon will get the job done. There are a lot of things in Cult of the Lamb that are breakable, like structures, dead bodies, or anything in-between, so don’t leave anything.

Additionally, don’t expect heaps of resources to drop from every object; some objects will not even drop any, but enough will.

Don’t Sleep On Affixes

Sword
The minor icon below the sword indicates the Affixes

Affixes are an aspect Cult of the Lamb doesn’t do a great job of explaining. Affixes can alter and impact some dungeon-crawling maps, for better or worse. While moving between the zones, you will see small icons under some of the map markers.

These indicate specific challenges or opportunities. An affix can basically add various types of gimmicks to a level. For example, affixes will double the amount of gold enemies drop, but at the same time, they will leave a pool of poison behind every time they die.

Alterations
Gameplay changes due to Affixes

It’s a tit-for-tat relationship that you should factor into your runs because it’s not just gold you can obtain, but it can be hearts, foods, tarot cards, and more. These items can help you build more buildings in your base, eventually helping you in building the best base in Cult of the Lamb.

Inspire & Extort

Spending time with the followers
Spending time with your followers will give them additional perks

An important step people seem to neglect later for progression is spending time with your followers. This is something the game teaches you early and has a huge upside. Spending time and praising your followers not only allows you to gain Devotion but also levels them up.

A leveled-up follower will have a higher success rate during the missions as compared to an un-leveled one, and the importance of sending your followers to gather resources is already explained above.

Furthermore, later on in the game, you will be able to extort your followers for some gold coins, which can turn into gold bars. In other words, all of these systems are connected, and it all begins with a simple act of praising your followers.

Giving Gifts

Necklaces
Gifting a feather necklace to a follower

Speaking of followers, let’s discuss the gifts you give to them. The best gift you can give to your followers is necklaces. You might come across a lot of necklaces during your runs without ever really knowing how great their utility is.

Giving these necklaces to your followers can give them various passive boosts such as increased movement speed and boosting resource farming, and there is a necklace that prevents them from sleeping which is great for keeping them awake through the night.

Necklaces are dropped randomly, but once they do, make sure to utilize them because they give your overall base and cult a massive boost.

Upgrading The Base

Missionary
Upgrading the missionary to level 2

You are going to be spending a lot of time with your cult, so make sure you maximize everything to its full potential. Don’t leave any stone between runs unturned. In other words, make sure you are doing your sermons every day, keeping your Devotion from capping out at your Shrine, seeing if the villagers are harvesting available resources, and keeping the balance in check.

The worst thing you can do is let a whole day slip by without making serious improvements to your base because there are so many systems that are easy to ignore, but once you make it a routine, the work will keep piling up, and before you know it you won’t be able to keep up with the difficulty of the dungeons.

So it’s all about having a proper mindset when it comes to managing and taking care of the base. Pay close attention to everything, don’t let your followers sit idle, and don’t let your hard-earned resources be wasted for no good reason.

Meditation

passing Time
Meditating through the night

Another great tip we want to give for our best base-building guide for Cult of the Lamb is how to speed up the time. There is a high chance you don’t want to sit idle for the night and are waiting to harvest the crops or start your next run in the morning; well, whatever the case, there will be times you want to get through the night without waiting in real-time.

This can be done by holding ‘Y” on your controller to meditate. This will speed up the time till morning when the hustle and bustle of your cult will pick back up.

This concludes our best base-building guide for the Cult of the Lamb. If there is a tip you want to share, don’t be shy to tell me about it in the comments below.
