It is never pleasant to download a huge game and instantly run into a bunch of crashes and errors. Since so many players are facing multiple problems, we were able to narrow down some of the best fixes for NFS Unbound crashes by going through multiple forums and Reddit posts on the internet.
So far, numerous players have reported that Need for Speed Unbound crashes for them right when they launch the game. In addition to that, there have been other reports that claim that whenever a player enters the story mode or chooses a car, the game instantaneously shuts down.
Despite the issues, we are adamant that EA will fix these problems in due time. Games tend to go through a rough patch during their initial days after launch. Although, for the time being, you can alter some game files on your PC, and run NFS Unbound using a different engine to relieve yourself of some of the early performance problems in the game.
Delete DX12 File
The first method that we managed to find while scrounging through Reddit was an easy step of deleting the DX12 file within your NFS Unbound Documents folder and from the game’s engine folder. Many players pointed out that by deleting the relevant file, their game started working properly. If you’re not aware of how to find the DX12 file on your PC, then we have got you covered.
You need to follow a few steps according to the gaming engine you use for NFS Unbound. You can find the DX12 file in the NFS Unbound’s shader cache/cache folder once locating your game engine folder (Origin or EA). Secondly, you will also head to the Documents folder and then delete the DX12 file from there too.
Before starting the process, make sure the gaming engine and NFS Unbound are not running on your PC. With that said, here are the first bit of steps you need to follow to delete the DX12 file if you’re running the game through the Origin Engine.
- Start up your PC.
- Open up your File Explorer and locate the “Origin Games” folder. (Your destination folder is set from within the Origin engine).
- In the “Origin Games” folder, find and open the “Need For Speed Unbound” folder.
- Now you will be able to see a bunch of different folders and files. Ignore everything and simply open the “Shadercache“.
- Now choose the “PcDx12” file and delete it.
After doing the above-mentioned steps, it is essential to delete the DX12 file from the Documents folder as well. Hence, here are the following steps:
- Open up the “File Explorer” on your PC.
- Head to the Documents folder by pressing the icon at the left panel of the File Explorer window.
- Now open the “Need For Speed Unbound” folder and enter the “cache” folder.
- Yet again, delete the Dx12 file you find here and close the window.
When you have followed these steps, close up all the windows and restart the PC. After it’s back and running, open the relevant gaming engine and run NFS Unbound to check if the game still causes any issues or not.
Launch The Game Through Origin

A few people on Reddit claimed that they were able to solve the NFS Unbound start-up errors by uninstalling the EA App and running the game through Origin. Before you try implementing this method, make sure that you link your Steam/EA/Origin accounts. Other than that, if the Origin client is unable to locate the game, then browse for it through the given option in the engine. After that, try running NFS Unbound to check whether the error has been fixed for you.
