Orchid Mantis is one of the deadliest bosses in Grounded. The game features multiple creatures which need a specified strategy to beat. While most of these creatures would be pretty easy to topple, the same can not be said for the Orchid Mantis. Thus, in today’s Grounded guide we will learn how to beat the Orchid Mantis.

When it comes to insects, nothing looks more mischievous and creepy than the Mantis. Unluckily, you will now encounter one in Grounded that is much bigger than you in addition to being creepy. As we mentioned earlier, the Orchid Mantis is one of the toughest bosses in Grounded.

In order to face the Mantis, you first need to go through a series of steps to access the battle. Our guide will cover every important detail you need to be aware of as you set out to defeat one of Grounded’s toughest foes. So without further ado, let’s get into the mix of things.

About Orchid Mantis

Despite having a bunch of different insects in the game, Grounded only features one Mantis. The Mantis has been given the title of a boss in the game, and rightly so. Among all the other bosses, it is one of the toughest to face. However, defeating the Orchid Mantis will give you access to some valuable loot that can be used to craft one of the Best Armor in the game!

The Orchid Mantis is found in the upper portions of the map. Its vague location lies within the Shed Surroundings. In this area, you will notice a porch full of flower pots. Among these, there is one Orchid Pot in which the Mantis rests until you summon it.

The player needs to follow multiple steps to summon the beast before facing it in battle. We will cover all of the details in the next section. For now, let us focus on the weaknesses and resistances of the Orchid Mantis.

The Orchid Mantis has an elemental resistance against ‘Spicy‘ tools. It is also resistant to Busting, Chopping, Explosive, Slashing, and Stabbing weapons. The Mantis is only comparatively weak against ‘Salty‘ tools. With that said, it is now time to go through the step-by-step guide to beating the Orchid Mantis Boss in Grounded.

Earlier we mentioned that to defeat the Orchid Mantis there are a couple of preparation steps you need to do. Without performing these steps the fight will remain inaccessible to you in Grounded. First and foremost, it is crucial to have good resisting Armor and a bunch of weapons on you. Make sure you have a few weapons with Salty enhancements since the Mantis is weak against them.

Before we get into the details of every single step. Let us list down the things you need to do in order to access the boss and fight against it. So here are the things you first need to do before considering taking on the Orchid Mantis.

Defeat the Assistant Manager

If you’ve defeated the Assistant Manager and the Hedge Broodmother, then you can continue with the following steps. Without defeating these two it is impossible to face the Orchid Mantis.

Unlocking The Stump Lab Outpost

If you’ve played the main storyline for a hefty amount of time, you would be well aware of what the Stump Lab Outpost is. For those of you who don’t know, the Stump Lab Outpost is situated in the North-East corner of the map under the Stump. To be exact, it is found in the Upper Grasslands in Grounded.

However, to enter the Stump Lab Outpost, you first need to unlock its door. Get your swimming shoes on because the key to the Stump Lab Outpost door is located deep within the Koi Pond. So first off, you will need to dive deep into the Koi Pond and enter the hidden lab through a hatch.

You can find the hidden lab right behind the Tree inside the pond. Once inside the lab, swim through the hallways until you reach a locked door, which can only be opened up by the Assistant Manager Keycard. You can get the keycard by defeating the Assistant Manager in the Black Anthill Lab.

Once you’re inside the locked room, swim around until you reach a red button. Upon pressing it, you will unlock the door back at Stump Lab Outpost. With that, we move on to our next step.

Collecting The Mantis Research Note

Now that you’ve unlocked the Stump Lab Outpost, you can now traverse below the Stump. Once you reach the depths, you will notice a vertical entrance into the lab. Inside this misplaced room, you will be required to do a bit of parkour before ultimately reaching the Mantis Research Note lying on the floor at the corner of the room.

By acquiring the Mantis Research Note, you will unlock the recipe for the Orchid Mantis Kebab, which you will cook in order to summon the Orchid Mantis. With the task done, make your way back and exit the dispositioned lab. Once you do that, make your way back to your base or craft an oven if you can.

Cooking Orchid Mantis Kebab

With the Mantis Research Note in hand, you will notice a new recipe in your crafting menu, titled ‘Orchid Mantis Kebab‘. However, to cook the Orchid Mantis Kebab, you will need an oven. Once you have access to an oven, you can then proceed and collect the required ingredients.

Here is a quick breakdown of the items you will need to cook the Orchid Mantis Kebab:

5x Broodmother Chunk
2x Fire Ant Head
1x Wooden Splinter

You can get the Broodmother Chunks only from the Broodmother boss. As for the Fire Ant Heads, you will need to kill and loot Fire Worker or Soldier Ants. Last but not least, the Wooden Splinter should be quite easy to get. You can get it by harvesting splinters using the Termite Axe.

Once you’ve collected all of these items, you can then cook the Orchid Mantis Kebab in the oven. It will take a few seconds to get cooked. After the Kebab is cooked, you will complete the preparation steps for the Orchid Mantis boss fight.

Boss Location

After you have completed all the prior steps, you can then pack up your important items and set foot in the Shed Surroundings in Grounded. If you’re starting your journey from the first Field Station, it is worth informing you that the path holds a lot of dangerous creatures.

The Orchid Mantis is no easy boss, and the path toward its arena tests the player to the fullest. To make things easier, make sure you’re traveling during the daytime and have ample sources of food and water. On top of that, it is pretty obvious that you should have a good range of multiple weapons paired with high-tier armor.

The Orchid Mantis boss in Grounded is located on the porch of the Shed, which can be found in the North-West region of the map. You can refer to the image above and mark the waypoint in your game as well to make things a bit simpler.

After reaching the exact point on the map, you will notice three flower pots. One of them will be significantly bigger and will have Orchids planted on top. There will be a grass shear conveniently placed against one of these pots. You can climb on top of the shear and make your way to the top of the pot, or you could also circle around the pots and climb up on a water hose to reach the pot.

Regardless of which path you take, you will end up noticing a tube leading into the big Orchid pot. Slide into this tube and make your way inside the pot where the Orchid Mantis will be resting within the leaves.

Battle

To initiate the battle, reach the center of the arena and use the Orchid Mantis Kebab to summon the mighty Mantis. Right after summoning the toughest boss in Grounded, you will hear a loud noise followed by the Mantis jumping down from above that will shake the ground beneath your feet. At this point, the exit from the arena will be blocked. The only way you’ll be able to leave the area will be by either dying or killing the Mantis boss.

The Orchid Mantis has a wide variety of melee attacks. It can hit you with its deadly 3-slam combo or a swiping attack. Other than that, the Mantis can also charge up its slam which can inflict a bleeding effect on the player. You also need to be aware of its lunging attack; from time to time, the Mantis will jump away from you only to lunge right back at you after a second or so.

By now, you will notice how huge the Orchid Mantis’ health bar is. However, once you bring it down to 80%, the boss will commence its second phase. During the 2nd phase, the Orchid Mantis will begin spitting pollen shots around the arena. These pollen blobs will move around until forming an infectious mist at a certain spot. Upon contact, the player will receive damage and will also see their speed, attack, and block stat get slowed down or decreased.

Apart from that, the Mantis will continue using its former attacks in addition to a new screaming move. The screams will also cause damage to your player and deteriorate your stamina. After you bring down its health to 50%, the Orchid Mantis will wreak havoc around the arena with the final phase initiation. It will now use multiple variations of attacks that will send shockwaves into the arena.

These attacks inflict a high amount of damage and are not blockable. Hence, it is of utmost importance to position yourself smartly during the third phase of the Mantis boss in Grounded.

Your strategy during the whole battle should be to fully utilize the big trunk in the middle of the arena as your cover. Apart from that, make sure that you’re using weapons with Salty enhancements on them. Since these weapons will inflict the most damage on the Orchid Mantis. Lastly, perfectly time your blocks in order to stay longer in the battle. However, the shockwaves are unblockable, so for that, you will need to find cover.

Following these strategies, you will eventually be able to beat the Orchid Mantis boss in Grounded!

Loot

The long-lasting battle is worth the pain because it will give you access to some high-tier loot in Grounded. After finally putting down the Mantis in the game, you can then loot its body to collect a few natural resources.

Here are the items you will get after beating the Orchid Mantis:

Mantis Claw
Mantis Chunk
Mantis Head

The loot as it is may not make sense. However, you won’t realize how important these resources are until you examine them in-game and discover the recipes that you can create using them. By defeating and looting the Orchid Mantis, you will be able to make the ‘Scythe of Blossoms‘, which is considered one of the Best Weapons in Grounded.
