Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: How To Get Charizard?

Here is everything you need to know about the 7-Star Charizard Tera Raid in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Charizard is one of the most prized Starter Pokemon in the franchise. But how can you get Charizard in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? Unfortunately, the Fire-type Pokemon can’t be captured while going through the wilds of the Paldea region. Luckily, an upcoming Seven-star Tera Raid features a Dragon Tera-type Charizard which players can capture after defeating it.

Key Highlights

  • Charizard is an event-exclusive Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
  • The Charizard Tera Raid event is scheduled to take place from December 15th to December 18th.
  • The 7-Star Tera Raid is open to players who have finished the entire story, beat the gym leaders a second time, and won the Academy Ace tournament.
  • Each player can only catch the Charizard once, however, they can reappear in the Tera Raids to get additional loot and EXP.

As we mentioned earlier, to get a chance at catching Charizard, you will need to take part in a Seven-star Tera raid (the highest-rated raid in the game so far). The Charizard raid is considered a special event in the new Pokemon game. The event was first launched on December 1st and was live till December 4th

If you missed out on the opportunity, there is nothing to worry about since the Charizard event will return on December 15th and run till December 18th of 2022. All of this means that you still have time to prepare yourself and your team to tackle the Dragon Tera-type Charizard and add it to your team. However, be wary because the battle is not easy at all.

It is worth mentioning that not everyone can partake in the battle against Charizard the Unrivaled. There are a few feats that you need to fulfill before you become eligible to face the Dragon-type Charizard. A player will be required to:

  • Complete all 3 Storylines (Victory Road, Starfall Street, and Path of Legends).
  • Finish the Post-game story.
  • Defeat every Gym Leader for the second time.
  • Win the Naranja/Uva Academy Tournament.
  • Takedown 10-15 Five-star Raid in Paldea Region.

After you complete all these tasks, only then you will be able to initiate and interact with seven-star Tera raids in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

So how strong is Charizard the Unrivaled? Well, it’s by far the toughest Terastallize Pokemon you will face in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. To start off, the Charizard is Level 100, not only that but all of its IV stats are maxed out. The Charizard also has the Solar Power ability which raises its Special Attack by 1.5x. All of this means that you need to properly prepare before you take part in the Tera Raid battle against Charizard.

Before beginning your journey to catch Charizard, first you will need to open up the Poke Portal (After the Charizard event begins). Once here scroll all the way down to “Mystery Gifts” then choose “Check Poke Portal News” so that you’re connected to the latest ongoing events in the Paldea Region.

By now you already know all the things you need to do before being able to access the Charizard Tera Raid battle. In a nutshell, you need to complete the whole game and beat the Ace Academy Tournament, and take down a bunch of 5-star Tera Raids. Once you have completed all that, you will need to set up your team perfectly to counter the Dragon-type Charizard.

If you plan to progress your Pokedex then it is important to know that the 100 Level Charizard is Fire plus Dragon type, which means that only Dragon and Fairy-type pokemon would be effective against it. However, since the Tera Charizard knows the Dragon Pulse move, it automatically puts other Dragon pokemon at a disadvantage. Hence, the only viable type that you should go for is Fairy

There are two pretty good options that could do well against Charizard the Unrivaled. First up, you could use Eevee’s evolution, Sylveon. It is a purely fairy-type Pokemon that can do well against the Dragon-type Charizard. Azumarill, on the other hand, is by far the greatest Pokemon to use against Charizard. Yes, you read that right! Azumarill is a Water plus Fairy-type Pokemon. Being Water-type it automatically weakens the Fire-type moves that Charizard uses.

Additionally, being a Fairy-type Pokemon it becomes double effective against the Tera Pokemon. Hence, if by any chance you have a tanked-up Azumarill on your team then you could potentially deal with the 7-Star Tera Charizard with ease.

Now that you’ve finally picked your main team which preferably contains Sylveon or Azumarill, then it will be time to head to battle. As of right now, you will not be able to take part in the Charizard event in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. As we mentioned earlier the 7-Star raid is set to return on December 15th and will run until December 18th.

You can access the battle through the Paldea map when the event returns in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The icon of the 7-Star Tera Raid will be a little different than the other common raids. Once you spot it on the map head towards it to find a black and purple crystal and interact with it to initiate the Tera Raid Battle either alone or with a group.

You could also access the raid through the Poke Portal. Pull up your team while playing the game and then choose “Poke Portal” from the side menu. Once the new tab opens up, pick the “Tera Raid Battle” option and then choose the icon of 7-Star Raid with a silhouette of the Charizard drawn on it.

After you click on the icon, the game will then start linking you up with three other players who will accompany you in the battle against Charizard the Unrivaled. Before heading into battle, click on “Change your Pokemon”  and then pick the one you want to use while facing Charizard. After that press “All ready to go!” and let the 7-star Charizard Raid commence.

As for the battle part, the Charizard will be level 100 and have all its IVs at 31. When it comes to its moveset, you can expect it to make use of Dragon Pulse, Hurricane, Focus Blast, and Fire Blast. The battle will be long and you will need to work in cohesion with your teammates to take the Mighty Dragon-type Charizard down. Make sure to perform effective moves and also cheer up your Pokemon and your teammate’s Pokemon to increase their HP and other stats.

After you successfully beat the Charizard the Unrivaled you can then capture it. Fortunately, it has a 100% catch rate and will not fight back against your Poke ball. So after you beat it feel free to pull out your preferred type of Ball and throw it at Charizard to add it to your team in the game. The Charizard you catch through this event will never appear as a Shiny Pokemon.

Although, it is worth mentioning that you can only catch the Charizard once through this event. If you have already caught Charizard during the first phase of the event then you won’t be able to get another one during the second phase. However, you can still tag along with other online players to take part in the Tera Raid and yield some valuable loot and EXP.

Apart from getting the chance to catch Charizard in Pokemon Scarlet and Silver, here are some of the items you can get after beating the Seven-star Tera Raid.

  • Exp Candy (L)
  • Exp Candy (XL)
  • Calcium
  • Dragon Tera Shards
  • Overheat (TM157)
  • Ability Patch

You can also get many other random awards as you continue to farm the Tera Raid Event in Pokemon Scarlet and Silver. So to wrap it up, you can only catch the Charizard once through the event. However, you can take part in the event multiple times to get high-quality loot.
