Since October of last year we’ve been seeing the rise of Mini LEDs as a solution for backlighting an LCD screen, due to their high price point they’ve only been in the background up until now, while Micro-LEDs are still a sort of pipe dream, Mini LEDs are being put into consumer electronics that would be coming out in the near future.
The way a Mini LED works is that there are a lot of small LED lights crowded behind a Mini LED panel which, consolidating hundreds if not thousands of small LEDs, will provide the best backlighting you’ve ever seen. The process is not unlike Full Array Local Dimming, but it’s like that times one hundred. AU Optronics showed off some panels including this backlighting in the form of a 27″ UHD 144Hz Monitor, a 15.6″ UHD LTS Gaming Notebook panel, and a 6″ Phone panel at SID Display Week in Los Angeles.
It hasn’t been confirmed when exactly these panels will come to the market, or how many of the different types will actually come to fruition. Mini LED application is only one of five things they’ve been working on for 2018. The rest are, top-tier 8k/4k TV panels, next-generation HDR, full-screen smartphone displays, and LTPS LCDs for Automotive applications. AU has just begun sending out samples for review, so the word is that these panels will be coming out in Q4 2018, so keep an eye out for those, with the first being the backlight Gaming Notebook.
