Redfall: 10 Things We Know So Far

After working on some exceptionally successful franchises like Dishonoured and Prey, the developers at Arkane Studios are now ready to release their next game in the first half of 2023. Redfall is the upcoming open-world FPS game by the developers of Arkane Studios, published by Bethesda Softworks. And here is everything we know about Redfall so far!

A big part of the anticipation revolves around the fact that this game will be nothing like their previous games. As the Co-Creative Director, Harvey Smith said in an interview with IGN, they (the directors) felt they needed some creative risk or change.

Since they have been working on dishonored and Prey for the last eight years, such steps are expected and much appreciated. Although much of the information about the game remains hidden, we gathered some info from gameplay trailers, interviews, and Twitter posts from the game’s official Twitter account.

Moreover, there are detailed blog posts on Bethesda’s website regarding some gameplay elements, combat mechanics, and other aspects of the game. With that said, let’s dive right into the news.

1. Platforms

Since we all know that Microsoft has now bought Bethesda, we would imagine that the game will be released on the Xbox series S and Series X. However, the good news is that the game will also be released on PC.

This can be seen as a part of the new trend where PC gamers can now enjoy console exclusives; it is truly a great time to be a PC gamer where we don’t have to get involved with console feuds.

However, that is terrible news for the players out here that own a PlayStation since Redfall will not be released on Sony‘s Console. Could it potentially get released later? From everything we know so far about Redfall’s platforms, it seems unlikely. But worry not, as PS5 still has other amazing games, such as the BEST Open World PS5 Games.

2. Plot

So far, it has been revealed that the game is set in a post-apocalyptic town named Redfall in Massutusets. Vampires overrun the town after a scientific experiment gets out of hand. We follow four heroes with special abilities as they battle through swarms of blood-sucking demons through the streets of Redfall.

Although the concept of vampires in video games has been around for quite some time, the developers have made it clear that these will not be your old-school bats that can be defeated using garlic and crosses. You will need special weapons and tools to make it out alive.

After having a closer look at the gameplay, we can draw many similarities between the gameplay for Redfall and Left 4 Dead. Although the Left 4 Dead had no plot, it was a fun game to play with your friends.

However, developers have commented that there is still much to explore in the open world of Redfall other than just mindless action. Even though there aren’t many things we know about Redfall’s storyline, the fact that the storyline has a significant impact on the game has been emphasized multiple times.

3. CO-OP And Solo Slaying

Redfall will be the first ever game from Arkane Studios that you can play in Co-op mode. You can team up with three more players and walk through the entire campaign with your friends. Players will also have the option to play as four different characters to balance their roster or even the same character.

Now, although playing Redfall with your friends is appealing to many players, some might even want to play it independently. In this regard, it is safe to say that Arkane Studios has not forgotten its roots. Harvey Smith has stated that the Solo experience was greatly emphasized during the development of Redfall. So, if any player wants to play solo, they absolutely can.

4. Gameplay

After looking at the gameplay reveal trailer, it is safe to say that the gameplay for Redfall looks like a sci-fi version of Left 4 Dead, where vampires have replaced zombies. However, the gameplay has originality regarding the characters’ unique abilities, beautiful animations, and weapons.

The gameplay for Redfall looks like a unique blend of intense fights, colorful weapons, and genuine horror. The gameplay’s particular aspects will make it a truly entertaining experience. Whether you play it solo or with your friends, the way we look at it and from everything we know so far about Redfall’s gameplay, you’ll definitely have fun.

5. The “Heroes”

As revealed in a blog post on Bethesda’s website, there are a total of four heroes you can choose from. Each character has its unique abilities and builds. Each character in this odd bunch can be best described as a mercenary, a combat engineer, a cryptozoologist, and a college student.

At first glance, these characters look like a bunch of misfits you would expect to team up in a post-apocalyptic world. However, that is not all. Apart from their backgrounds, the developers have also given us a taste of each character’s unique abilities. Here’s everything we know so far about the characters in Redfall.

In true American fashion, the first character is Layla Elison, a college student who volunteered for medical trials to escape student debt. However, the trials backfired, which resulted in mutations in her body. As a result, she has developed superpowers like telekinesis.

The second character, Devinder or “Dev,” is the weapons specialist and a supernatural investigator traveling worldwide to promote his book. As the weapons expert of the team, he is responsible for making anti-vampire weapons to help you in your journey through the grim town of Redfall.

Next is Jacob Boyer or “Dead Eye.” Every team needs a sharpshooter to give them cover and watch their backs. Luckily for our heroes, one of them is an expert sniper and ex-military. With him on the team, we can rest assured that no shot will ever get wasted.

The last member of the team is Remi De La Rosa, a coast guard that created a companion robot to help her with her dangerous work. As she is a robotics expert, she is the designated team engineer. The companion robot goes by the name of Birbon and might as well be considered the third member of the team. From what we know, he is an all-in-one decoy, cover, and attack drone.

6. Customization

Now that was all related to the character of the game now, let’s move on to the customization options. Before we get into the next section, which is the weapon customization, let’s look at character upgrades first.

You can upgrade your characters by using skill points from completing the main story and side missions. The skill points will allow you to upgrade the primary abilities of your characters, like Layla’s psychic umbrella shield and Jacob’s raven scout.

Apart from the primary abilities, you can also upgrade additional attributes like ammunition storage, health recovery, lockpicks, and rewire kits. We also noticed a character tree with different abilities and specializations from the gameplay. If that is the case, it will allow players to create more diverse lineups even when all players choose to play with the same character.

7. Weapons

As stated by the production director Ben Horne, the weapons in Redfall are an exciting twist in the genre. The developers have added all the traditional weapons like rare shotguns and sniper rifles, but there are also some special vampire hunting weapons like the stake launcher and the UV beam.  

The official blog post on the website also revealed that some weapons would have a post-apocalyptic feel. Where many enhancements will be made with whatever resources are left in the town, the players will also find military-grade equipment, but the source of this gear will be revealed as the game’s plot unfolds.

8. Vampires

As all zombie games have different types of zombies, Redfall will have different types of vampires. In their recent Guide to Redfall: The Vampires, the developers have informed us that the vampires in Redfall are in no sense old-fashioned. Here’s everything we know so far about vampires in Redfall!

They are powerful and sentient creatures that can block out the sun. After witnessing their power, many inhabitants of the town have started a cult that worships the vampires.

Since they were a part of scientific experiments, they have achieved their version of immortality. As the game progresses, the vampires that you face will also evolve. Starting out from the smaller minions, the vampires will only get stronger as you make your way through the story.

You will likely have to face some stronger vampires in boss fights. Like the one seen in the gameplay reveal suspected to be the “Rook.”

9. The Open World

Another interesting thing that we know about Redfall is that it will be an open-world game. There will be side missions and exploration options spread throughout the map, and you won’t be confined to specific areas like in Dishonoured. 

Although that is not the typical style of Arkane Studios, it is good to see that they are taking an experimental approach to developing Redfall. Although it is not yet clear whether you will be able to explore the higher-level areas and how the open world will balance out the campaign of the game, it is safe to say that we are all excited to see how everything falls into place.

10. Multiple Endings And Choice

Multiple endings are a big part of the games developed by Arkane Studios. However, the development team has pointed out that multiple endings are not an essential point in Redfall.

Although there are elective missions, there is no concept of branching missions that have consequences on the main story depending on the player’s choice. The characters will have multiple dialogues depending on your roster and the dynamic between each hero, but there’s nothing more to it.
