Shadow of The Tomb Raider just got a surprise next-gen update for the PlayStation 5, the XBOX Series X, and XBOX Series S. The update supposedly bumps up the resolution of the PS5 and Series X versions to 4K while also offering a solid 60FPS. However, Series S only gets the FPS boost at the original resolution. According to a detailed comparison by Digital Foundry, both versions maintain a consistent 60FPS in most cases but the PlayStation 5 version manages to take the cake in terms of maintaining the best performance in intense situations.
It should be said that while Shadow of The Tomb Raider now has a 4K 60FPS update, the previous title in the series, Rise of The Tomb Raider is still locked to a 4K 30 FPS on next-gen consoles, whether this is going to remain that way for any longer remains to be seen in the future.
Shadow of The Tomb Raider launched to a positive reception back in 2018 with critics praising the game for its gorgeous visuals, focus on puzzles, and the series iconic Tomb Raiding aspect while citing the downgraded combat and lackluster story as negatives. Shadow of The Tomb Raider is considered the final game in the Tomb Raider trilogy that started with the 2013 reboot Tomb Raider starring Lara Croft as an up-and-coming archeologist instead of the sunglasses-wearing, dual-wielding badass we had known up until that point. The 2013 reboot was widely praised for giving an iconic series another shot in the spotlight and reinventing it using a modern framework.
