Key Takeaways
- Nintendo re-released the game under the title “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” in April 2017 for the Nintendo Switch
- It received a 92 score on Metacritic but some fans had slight problems with the “lifeless” graphics of the game
- Though some were unhappy with the release of the first wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, many players came out to defend Nintendo as well
Mario Kart 8 is one of the best releases from Nintendo ever. The original game came out for Wii U in 2014, and it was quite a hit for the company. Due to the success of its release for Wii U, Nintendo decided to make Mario Kart 8 for the Nintendo Switch as well and re-released the game under the title “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” in April 2017.
The game’s release for the Nintendo Switch surpassed the original game’s release for the Wii U. It achieved a 92 score on Metacritic, adding 4 points to the original 88-score of Mario Kart 8. The fans were not expecting a release of an additional paid expansion for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. However, Nintendo delivered one, albeit with a slight problem.
The expansion features a whopping six waves, each featuring eight different courses. Yesterday, the first wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass was released. But, some fans were quite unhappy with the release as the graphics, particularly textures of the grass, felt lifeless. One player on Twitter even posted screenshots of Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe side-by-side. The new expansion is not identical to the game itself, but it could mean that the maps were reused from the original Mario Kart Tour.
#MK8D Original vs. DLC
Notice how the light reflects off the main road, the red and the grass the same way in the DLC. Nintendo didn't make new normal/specular maps. Makes everything feel sterile compared to the rustic original.Music slaps tho. pic.twitter.com/XPcAx9Sn5V

Amidst the storm of many players complaining and trashing the game, others came out to defend Nintendo. “I mean doubling the number of tracks I can play for like £20 is really solid, couldn’t care less about “realistic grass” in a mario kart game,” replied one player to a tweet comparing the grass textures in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass.

Based on the screenshots, the difference is obvious. Of course, for some players, graphics in a Mario Kart game may not be a major concern, but for many players, it is. There is certainly a disparity of takes between the Mario Kart players, but it would be great if Nintendo addresses these concerns soon.
