Story Highlights
- Despite the devolving quality of Call of Duty and Activision’s indifference, the series remains popular.
- The deep-rooted enjoyment of war games and action-packed shooters helps its case.
- Call of Duty is carried by its amazing, nostalgic past entries, but for how long?
The next Call of Duty is here, and as always, it’s followed by a surge of criticism. Over the years, this legendary franchise has undergone significant changes, and not all of them have been for the better. In fact, I firmly believe Activision is heading in the wrong direction. The majority of public sentiment is also the same.
Black Ops 7 features yet another horrible campaign. It’s hollow, the characterization is bad, AI content runs rampant, and the Black Ops 2 sequel plot is ruined. Yet, this co-op shooter series remains one of the best-selling game franchises of all time. Why? Beneath the botched campaign is an amazing multiplayer experience, and that’s not the only reason. So grab your own Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 key and share your thoughts with me.

The Psychological Hook Of War Games
There’s one very simple explanation for why people continue to enjoy Call of Duty: We, as humans, love War games. Human history is filled with wars, and while I in no way condone this behavior, nor do I support a war or conflict of any kind whatsoever, but you’ve got to admit, virtual war and the sense of accomplishment it brings give an unreal amount of thrill.
It’s just the way we are hardwired, and these games are designed to appeal to those basal urges. Adrenaline-fueled action, high-stakes shooting, and cinematic battles, coordinating a team effort to tactically surround and take out the enemy, all this feels like you’re really on a battlefield, and the constant kills provide short but satisfactory rewards.

It’s designed on the logic of the “hero fantasy” we all harbor at some points in our lives. Not everyone can fulfill their desire to be the hero and save the day, but in a video game like this, they sure can. Alongside all the adrenaline-pumping action, war games offer you the sense of accomplishment and the extreme satisfaction of mowing down the enemy. When you’re out here having fun playing the hero, all the criticism and game design flaws just disappear.
The Power Of Nostalgia
Before Activision decided to take the fan following for granted and do nothing to improve, Call of Duty was a genuine masterpiece. Mind-blowing campaigns, awesome set-pieces, immersive shooting action, and tactical depth; classic Call of Duty games were universally acclaimed for a reason. And it’s that sweet, nostalgic burst of affection that keeps the series going even today.

We all know just how hard Activision has fumbled the modern Call of Duty series. There’s a new Call of Duty every year now, and each is just rehashed content. At some point, Activision decided, “This franchise sells itself,” and just stopped trying.
However, even though we complain every time, and all of it is valid and logical, we can’t seem to stop playing. More than a standalone game, playing Call of Duty is a reminder of the good old times and the series’ nostalgic appeal that hasn’t faded. Nostalgia is a powerful driving force.
The Joys Of Multiplayer
Probably the most important factor is the inherent nature of co-op shooters and multiplayer games. Online gaming took the world by storm, and for genuine reasons. All the limitations of local co-op disappeared; virtual chat and heated arguments over the microphone became a lot more appealing (there’s no chance of escalation, after all), and skillfully coordinating actions and competing against skilled teams is just unrivaled.

Call of Duty may have a thousand flaws today, but the core gameplay loop of a co-op shooter is still there. You can play different game modes, team up or go solo, compete against players all over the world, tactically plan your actions, and above all, earn the immense satisfaction of clutching a victory. Basically, every factor that makes these online shooters so beloved plays a part in strengthening Call of Duty’s appeal.
Things Are Changing Now
However, despite all of these factors, Activision can’t keep getting away with it, not anymore. Unlike the past, when Call of Duty was the reigning champion, things are different now. The existence of rivals and better alternatives jeopardizes Call of Duty’s position, unless it makes some much-needed changes.
At the end of the day, every game competes for your time. When the gaming time is short and precious, you’d want to go with the most entertaining and satisfying stuff. If there’s a better option available, who will opt for the weaker one? The sooner Activision realizes this, the better. Call of Duty still has a massive fan following, but it’s not good to test their patience.
