Elden Ring: Nightreign Won’t Allow Two-Player Gameplay Sessions

A shocker, to say the least.

Story Highlights

  • Elden Ring: Nightreign is one of the most hyped-up releases of 2025 that FromSoftware just announced.
  • According to the developer, you can either play the game solo or with three other players.
  • The lack of a two-player mechanism has aroused dislike among fans, and the consensus is clear.

As much as I was excited about FromSoftware’s upcoming iteration of the extended Soulsborne franchise, here’s a piece of news that I know many won’t be fond of. As per a new interview with the maker of the game, Elden Ring: Nightreign is designed to be played either solo or with two other players—no in-between. Junya Ishizaki, the director of Nightreign, says that this was largely a “game-balancing decision.”

The game is designed to be played as a three-person team, but you can play it as a solo player.”

When asked if two-player was possible, Junya replied with a firm “no,” adding that “it’s either one-player or three-player.” It’s upsetting I know, and forces you to find a third wheel if you plan on experiencing the spin-off with a partner.

The reason that we went with a three-player focus was that we wanted to retain that sense of accomplishment you get from battling a boss together or from conquering a map together and that sense of enjoyment, but we wanted to recreate that in a fresh way. And we felt like focusing on a three-player co-op experience would provide a brand new sense of accomplishment with it.”

Elden Ring: Nightreign Is The Elden Ring Spin-Off We Did Not Know We Needed

Initially, a certain portion of Elden Ring’s fan base felt opposed to what Nightreign is bringing to the table. The developers describe it as an Elden Ring spin-off with a completely different narrative focus as compared to the base game. It’s a reason why George R.R. Martin didn’t return for Nightreign because the latter’s story branches out separately following the events of the Shattering in the in-game world.

The latter is something you’d want to be in the know of if you’re not already. VaatiVidya’s video on Elden Ring’s lore is a must-watch if you’d like to understand what’s going on here actually.
