Old School RuneScape recently dropped a massive update to the Chambers of Xeric (CoX), including a number of changes made to boss encounters and map generation. These changes have made things more rewarding for players, allowing them to farm more OSRS gold each run. Not only that, but Jagex also revamped other content in the game too, which should encourage newer players to jump in and try them out.
The new update dropped on April 30 and was immediately available to all players. There were a ton of new changes, most notably the ones implemented in the Chamber of Xeric layout.
Patches for OSRS are going out at a steady pace despite devs being divided to handle more projects. The release of RuneScape: Dragonwilds hasn’t impeded the development of OSRS or RS3. In fact, the new game has generated renewed interest in the two older MMOs.
Chamber of Xeric Challenge Mode Layout Option

Before the rework, one of the main issues players had with the Chamber of Xeric was its unpredictability in terms of its portals and room layouts. Many raiders experienced moments where they ran out of HP and Mana and still didn’t hit the right portal for the next area, making things incredibly frustrating.
Now, the Challenge Mode Layout allows for more flexibility and predictability per run. The CM option can now be used in regular runs, too, so there’s no difficulty in scaling for CM-specific rewards or HP.
The layout in Regular mode will allow players to choose from a small, large, or full layout. Going with the last option lets raiders hit every possible room, which removes the RNG aspect of regular Chambers of Xeric. It’s an excellent tool for challenge mode newbies to learn the aspects of the run, and is also a good option for speedrunners who want to zoom past most of the rooms while farming as much OSRS gold as possible.
Abyssal Sire Rework
The Abyssal Sire is considered one of the most annoying and tedious bosses to fight in the game because of how long its transition phases last. With the update, these phases have been effectively shortened to make fights much faster. Meanwhile, the boss’s movement speed has also been ramped up to match players to prevent a more sluggish pacing. Unfortunately, the drop rates for loot remain entirely unchanged.
Chinchompa Insurance
This change ensures that your fluff Chinchompas stay with your death pile upon PvM death or disconnecting. These pets work like everyday items, but other players can still poach them from you in PvP. In addition, you no longer need to destroy Chimchompas to get rid of them; you can just drop them.
Other Minor Changes And Fixes
With the major updates out of the way, there’s also a solid list of quality-of-life changes you’ll find useful as you jump back into the game. After the introduction of Moving Fishing Spots, many players found their movement significantly stalled when running towards them. It’s unclear if this is a bug or an actual mechanic of the game, but the devs have since fixed the issue.
The Imcando Hammer can now be used in Entrana. Players argued that the item has no added stats or improvements to unarmed combat, so the devs figured it wouldn’t hurt to whitelist this for the content. Players can now use the main-hand and off-hand variants during their runs in Entrana.
Jagex will now slowly introduce more shortcuts to agility courses to allow players with high agility to skip long walks or routes. The newest one will be in the Varrock Castle Garden, where gamers can hop over the fence. The only requirements are to reach Agility Level 35 and complete the Garden of Tranquility.
Lastly, the Master of Pacts, which went live on March 14, has new rewards this time around, and we’re also getting more cool and sparkly armor to boot.
