The original Angry Birds game, published in 2009 and later promoted as Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, will be removed from the Google Play Store on February 23, 2023, bringing an end to an era for one of the world’s most popular video games.
The series is undergoing dramatic changes more than a decade after its inception. It was a game that debuted with excellent timing and foresight into how to attract casual mobile gamers.
Angry Birds started a revolution, and its success spawned a slew of sequels, including tie-in media like TV series and blockbuster animated films.
The actual reason for the removal from Google Play has not been revealed – but given the ‘business case’ listed here, it appears the original game, which now retails for just AU $1.79 with no paid content, is much more appealing than newer Rovio items.

Buck, Senior Brand and Community Development Manager at Rovio, provided more information on Discord. As shown by a Twitter screenshot, the original version of Angry Birds is having a detrimental influence on Rovio’s other games.
Rovio is encouraging fans to explore newer Angry Birds editions, which not only expand the basic gameplay and introduce new modes but also include microtransactions that alter the whole experience.
Smartphone gaming companies rely on a steady stream of revenue to survive, and it looks like Rovio is now searching for new methods to improve its products and entice people to play its most lucrative games.
Even after it is withdrawn from the Play Store, the game will still be accessible on devices that have previously installed it. If you like Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, you should download it and test it before the cutoff.
