Story Highlights
- Astro Bot devs have confirmed that the game was initially planned to be fully open-world.
- Team Asobi decided to go for a level-based approach to have more control over variety.
- The anticipated 3D platformer is slated to drop on September 6, 2024, for the PS5.
As per newly revealed info, Astro Bot almost went the open-world route like many other IPs in the industry. Speaking to Edge Magazine in its 400th issue (thanks GamesRadar), Team Asobi’s head Nicolas Doucet clarified that the devs initially asked themselves whether it needed to be an open-world experience but ultimately decided against it. Choosing the level-based approach basically gave the studio more control over the game’s variety.
Opting for the 80 planets instead means that each level has received a lot of love and creativity, which might not have been possible in a singular open-world setting. Nicolas also says that devs were still undecided on certain aspects of the title, so they did “a lot of prototyping of gameplay mechanics” to nail down the best results. Additionally, a lot of demos were made that came up with “new, expressive ways to use the DualSense.”
A Free DLC Has Already Been Confirmed For Astro Bot
For those not in the know, Team Asobi’s head Nicolas Doucet also confirmed in a recent interview with IGN that a free DLC is in the works, which would roll out after the game releases. The expansion will bring more challenging levels and other additions. While more official details were not shared, we can expect the addition of other types of content later on, like character-themed levels and improvements to the overall gameplay.
