Story Highlights
- Ten years later, Mythic+ continues to overshadow all endgame content in World of Warcraft.
- The 5-person time-gated quest design with progressively scaling difficulty is a true thrill.
- Mythic Plus’ very high skill requirement and no entry for new players continues to pose a problem.
Another day, another World of Warcraft topic; it’s Mythic Plus this time around. Hard to believe it’s already been a decade. Back in 2016, the Legion expansion came out, and along with it, a new endless game mode called Mythic+. Ever since then, this brutal endgame content has rotated seasonally, but above all, it has completely transformed the way veteran players interact with WoW’s endgame. Was it a good thing? We’ll see.
World of Warcraft continues to go strong as an amazing MMO, but as any long-running game, it has faced its fair share of controversies, one of which is Mythic Plus. It’s a meta-centric endgame mode where mistakes have grave consequences, and I don’t need to tell you how people might feel about this. Nevertheless, dedicated fans compete like crazy, designing immaculate Mythic+ rotations and min-maxing stats, which is why an m+ dps tier list is such a popular topic. But what does it all mean for casual players?

Mythic+, An Exciting Race Against Time
Well, whatever the controversies may be, I think there’s no denying that if you’ve been following WoW for a long time, the endgame challenge of Mythic+ is pretty exciting. Yes, some affix rotations are absurd and make things pointlessly hard, but the overall design of the game mode, where you perfect rotations and race against the clock for the best rewards, is a true test of your builds and game knowledge. It’s a mode that rewards effort and dedication.

If you’re constantly pulling a 2500-3000 rating in seasonal M+ content, you know what I’m talking about. From learning enemy mechanics to executing precise strategies where even a single mistake costs the entire run, it’s a risk-reward heavy mode. When you’re in the zone, it genuinely feels exciting to the point no other content is challenging enough. Getting into 10+ is where the real, tooth-and-nails stuff begins. Higher keys require all the more coordination, but the loot and rewards make up for it.
Mythic+ is not for the faint of heart. It’s given people obsessed with the grind a reason to return and stick to the game. I’ve seen people play nothing but M+ with their friends; it’s both a social activity and a challenging grind for them. This sort of focused gameplay and a testing ground for the most meta builds is always great news for seasoned players. However, for a moment, take a step back and see what this sort of thing hurts.
Driving A Wedge Between The Community
All of these things that make Mythic+ so exciting for some people make it an absolute nightmare for others. For starters, it’s an extreme meta gatekeep where new or less-experienced players just can’t keep up, period. M+ demands pretty good game sense and precise gameplay commands. One weak link in the team will cost everyone that run, and boy do people get pissed when that happens. You’d be too, if you were in that situation.

Mythic+ is not something where veteran players can just carry the newcomers. A good run needs full effort from all 5 players, so they’ll always prefer playing with someone on their level. And that’s where the toxicity begins. M+ is so meta-centric and high-level that you can’t just break into it with a shaky resolve. You make one mistake, and you’re forever banned from the social group, which will make you hate this game mode, and for very good reasons.
Anyone else feel a bit 'left out' of modern WoW by not playing M+?

And because Mythic+ exists, it has killed practically every other game mode and their social aspect. You rarely find people in lower game modes willing to carry new players. Everyone’s busy with M+, but you avoid those lobbies because everyone will let you have it if you mess up. What is a new player supposed to do then? Besides, some affix rotations in seasons are so unbelievably absurd it’s just plain frustrating. Goes to show that not everything is a bed of roses, and that’s especially true for a long-running game where meta and power creep are but inevitable.
