Biggest Announcements And Reveals From Summer Game Fest 2024

A spoonful of new games followed by updates on existing IPs as well.

Story Highlights

  • The Summer Game Fest event, hosted by Geoff Keighley, is one of the biggest gaming events of the year.
  • The occasion has leaned into a wealth of different games and new announcements this time around.
  • Some of the most prominent updates revolve around Phantom Blade Zero, a new Lego game, and more.

I don’t know about anybody else, but I thought the Summer Game Fest was a pretty tight show this time around, offering much-needed updates on a ton of different games that people were looking forward to, while also making big announcements with the likes of the next iteration in the long-running Civilization franchise, among other instances of development.

But in case you happen to have missed the main event, fret not. This piece is going to summarize everything that went down yesterday at the big showcase, though I’d recommend tuning into the rest of the event, since this entire weekend is packed with more exciting events, including the Xbox Showcase on June 9 and Ubisoft Forward the very next day.

The Summer Game Fest 2024 In A Nutshell

Here are the most prominent reveals from the main Summer Game Fest event that you need to stay up-to-speed on.

1. Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 Is Now A Reality

The next installment in the iconic Civilization series of strategy-focused games is finally official, as developer Firaxis Games along with the publishing hand of 2K prepares to dole this one out next year, as per the teaser. No gameplay was shown during the sequence, but that’s no worry. The latter is supposed to be properly showcased in August. That’s not a lot of wait anyway.

2. Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero Gets A Release Date

Talk about childhood nostalgia reborn and made ten times better. Well, we don’t really know about the latter for sure until Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero comes out, but the Summer Game Fest sure did bring us closer to finding that out. The much-anticipated installment in the Dragon Ball: Budokai Tenkaichi franchise is no longer a dream, and is coming out later this year in October.

At eXputer, I’ve been closely following the status of the game ever since it was announced about six months ago. For starters, it boasts the biggest character roster out of every other Budokai Tenkaichi game and is also all set to feature a local multiplayer mode.

3. Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Heads To Consoles In September

I think I now understand why Hogwarts Legacy kept out the legendary Quidditch from being playable by users. Warner Bros. Games seemingly had a full-fledged title based on the sports coming, and now thanks to the Summer Game Fest, we now have its first-ever official look. Honestly, initial impressions aren’t too good, considering how the title looks, but perhaps, the gameplay aspect is sufficient enough to warrant the game’s success down the road.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions makes landfall in September this year.

4. Batman: Arkham Shadow Gets A Story Trailer

Batman: Arkham Shadow for the Meta Quest 3 was featured with a deeper dive during the Summer Game Fest following its initial teaser some time back, which, I’ll be honest, didn’t attract a lot of good attention. With the event putting out a dedicated “Official Story Trailer,” we now have a better idea as to what to expect from a plot POV.

Evidently, some of the franchise’s most famous characters make an unequivocal return, including Commissioner Gordon and his daughter Barbara Gordon. Batman: Arkham Shadow also introduced one of its major protagonists, the Rat King, in the trailer. Despite that part about Meta Quest 3 exclusivity, things don’t seem half bad, though it’s true that a proper sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight would’ve been more appreciated.

5. Lego Horizon Adventures Is Official

The Lego franchise has come a long way from where it first started out, now taking Guerilla Games’ Horizon IP for a spin and breathing new and fresh life into it. Frankly, I see a lot of stuff in there that I happen to be liking, and there’s no reason for you not to keep an eye on this one at the very least. The release window mentioned in the reveal trailer is “Holiday 2024,” which could suggest that its launch for to release for not long from now.

6. Phantom Blade Zero Receives First-Ever Gameplay Trailer

Honestly, this is one of those “Shut up and take my money” situations where one simply can’t wait enough for Phantom Blade Zero, which is apparently S-Game’s first venture in the grueling world of the Soulslike genre. When the title was first revealed, its combat seemed too good to be true, hinging more on the “fake” or “scammy” side of things.

However, all those concerns have been blown out into the water I presume. The combat of the title that was shown previously seemingly adds up, and I love how fight sequences have that cinematic quality attached to their name. You should check out eXputer’s interview with Soulframe where the CEO of S-Game went over some crucial details pertaining to this ambitious project.
