Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s DLC 5 has been a resounding success, captivating fans with its immersive gameplay and faithful adaptation of the beloved Dragon Ball storyline. Its success opens the door to exciting possibilities for a game based on the original anime. It has been almost 14 years since we got a game based on the story that started it all and I truly believe that if enough love and care is put into it, the game will be a huge success.
A Breath Of Fresh Air For The Franchise
We all know that Goku loves fighting, food, and protecting his friends. On one hand, he can be a loveable goofball, and on the other, a genius fighter that his foes regret messing with. However, what if we went back to the very beginning and saw his journey from a kid to an adult? I think this can even be a prequel to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and the name of the game could be, Dragon Ball: Son Goku.
Adding a new spin to the story of every Dragon Ball Z game is a testament to the time that just shows how amazing the characters and the stories are. We have a game where you can create your own character whether it is a Saiyan, a Namekian, or even from the Frieza Race. In addition, we have an amazing 2D fighting game, an open-world game, and the return of a nostalgic 3D fighting game based on Dragon Ball Z.
While Dragon Ball Z games in general are focused primarily on epic aerial combat, I feel like a game centered on the original anime could bring back the intense and strategic ground battles that defined the early adventures of Goku and his friends. Imagine engaging in dynamic battles with iconic villains like Emperor Pilaf and his henchmen, or even facing off against the Red Ribbon Army in epic showdowns.
Don’t get me wrong, I love destructive environments in Dragon Ball Z games, despite the fact those were mostly temporary and not permanent. However, I also believe that we’re long overdue for a game that doesn’t need ki blasts every now and then. How about more focus on martial arts? Unlocking new combos and trying out a new chain of attacks which would make combat even more interesting.
Another subtle but great detail I would appreciate would be a balanced damage counter where enemies are no longer damaged with an attack power of over 9000. Let’s face it, at this point, the power levels are broken and I feel like this would be a nice back-to-basics approach the franchise really needs. Seeing how Goku first learned the Kamehameha would be a great experience and a foundation for what’s to come later on in the game.
Also, the inclusion of iconic storylines, such as the World Martial Arts Tournament, was pivotal in showcasing the growth and development of the series’ characters. Players could participate in exhilarating tournaments, testing their skills against formidable opponents from the original anime. The tournament arcs would not only provide intense battles but also offer a chance to explore the rich lore that makes the Dragon Ball world so exhilarating.
Hunting For The Dragon Balls Is More Crucial Than Ever
Let’s face it, almost in every Dragon Ball game, the Dragon Balls were a mere bonus feature and weren’t necessary plotwise. Acquiring the Dragon Balls in the previous game would give you the option of getting more Zeni, faster unlocks for characters or skills, etc. At least Dragon Ball Z Kakarot made finding the Dragon Balls fun but it was nowhere near challenging and this is where the original anime game can stand out from the rest.
Exploration would play a vital role in this potential game. Players would have the opportunity to traverse the vast Dragon Ball world and search for the legendary Dragon Balls. This time around, the challenge of finding the Dragon Balls could be heightened, requiring players to overcome formidable obstacles. The sense of adventure and discovery would be truly immersive, allowing players to fully immerse themselves in the Dragon Ball universe.
Furthermore, the sections of each world could be separated by using hub worlds. This will allow players to explore various locations like Jingle Village, Pilaf’s Castle, Red Ribbon Army Headquarters, Giran’s Village, and more. There can even be a total of 7 locations with each location having its own Dragon Ball to acquire using various methods. That way, acquiring a Dragon Ball can be a rewarding experience for many.
Return Of Forgotten Characters
A game based on the original anime could reintroduce long-forgotten characters, breathing new life into the franchise. Fans would have the chance to interact with beloved characters like Launch, who played a significant role in the early episodes of Dragon Ball but gradually faded into obscurity. In fact, Yamcha might even be more useful this time around. Personally, I want these characters to have some spotlight instead of the Z-Fighters.
The inclusion of these characters would not only add depth to the game’s narrative but also evoke a sense of nostalgia for longtime fans of the series. While Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot did bring a number of characters back from the original anime, they were included for side missions only. Other games would have a few references or a small cameo appearance.
This time, these characters can have a bigger role in the game and be a part of Goku’s adventure so that players can connect with these forgotten characters. Imagine a funny mini-boss sequence where Launch sneezes and you have to dodge her alter ego’s bullets and the only way you can win is to make her sneeze so that she returns to normal. I would definitely love a sequence where we have multiple training sessions with Master Roshi as well.
In conclusion, the anticipation surrounding the potential for a Dragon Ball game is undeniably high. Ground battles, challenging exploration, the return of forgotten characters, and thrilling tournament arcs are just a few of the elements that could make such a game an unforgettable ride. Now, we can only hope that our wishes will be granted and that we will soon embark on a new adventure through the world of Dragon Ball’s origins.
