Hades 2: Umbral Flames Best Build [No Longer Average]

Umbral Flames has faced some negativity by fans due to its low damage but the weapon's potential can be unlocked by the following build!

Hades 2 has five weapons so far in the early access, so picking one shouldn’t be that hard, but players can still be uncertain about which one to choose. Umbral Flames is one of those that has become a controversial weapon despite being a good choice. The weapon is actually quite good only if you make the best Umbral Flames build, and for that, a good RNG is required in Hades 2.

Key Takeaways
  • There are a total of five weapons available in Hades 2.
  • Umbral Flames is one of those weapons, and it can feel underwhelming without a good build.
  • To maximize Umbral Flames’ damage, players should use Hephaestus, Hestia, and Zeus’s Boons.
  • Also, upgrading the weapon is necessary in order to increase the DPS.
  • Author’s Note: I have played over nine playthroughs in Hades 2, which makes me a trustworthy source of information for you.

Overview Of The Umbral Flames Build In Hades 2

Umbral Flames can be crafted, but you will need three silver and cinder. The weapon’s range doesn’t disappoint me, and its special attack is quite good, too. It took me by surprise when this weapon mimicked the exact same move Hecate, the first boss, did.

The following is an overview of the best Umbral Flames build in-game:

  • High damage.
  • Excels in AoE damage.
  • Inflicts many status effects on the enemies.
  • Great for the late game.
  • Not that easy to make.
  • Requires a good RNG.

Best Boons For The Build

First of all, you should know which boons are the best for this build. I think Hephaestus, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hestia’s boons are the best choices as three of them give a certain effect.

Hephaestus Boons

Using Hephaestus’s Boons with the Umbral Flames build is ideal (Screenshot Taken By Us)

For starters, you should focus on the Hephaestus’s Boons as they go along well with the Umbral Flames.

The following boons should be your priority:

  • Volcanic Flourish: If you use Umbral Flames, you will definitely use the special more often. So, getting the Volcanic Flourish is a great idea, as it deals massive AoE damage.
  • One Shotting Many Foes: Upon activating the Volcanic Flourish, you can one-shot many enemies in-game. This will also help you a lot in the boss fights as you will be using a lot of special moves.
  • Volcanic Strike: Volcanic Strike is another good option if you want to use more normal attacks. This skill does a lot of damage and is capable of one-shotting some enemies, but of course, it is not as good as Volcanic Flourish.

Both of these skills helped me a lot in my runs and are definitely worth having. Players should also note that both skills have a cooldown as well, so playing strategically and retreating when needed are the best ways to go here.

Hestia Boons

Hestia

Hestia is the Goddess of flames, so her boons will allow you to inflict burn on the enemies, which comes in handy.

The following are the boons you should look for:

  • Flame Flourish: With Umbral Flames, you would need as much damage as possible, and Flame Flourish can help achieve that. This boon allows your special attacks to inflict Scorch on enemies, which increases the DPS.
  • Flame Strike: This boon is similar to the previous one. It can be implemented via normal attacks. Umbral Shines is the best with its special attacks.

You might not receive these boons in a single run as Hades 2 is highly dependent on RNG, but once you do, you can easily make the best Umbral Flames build and dominate the underworld in Hades 2.

Zeus Boons

Zeus is one of the best gods in-game, and he can provide you with some of the best Boons, so his appearance is also a good sign.

You should focus on these Zeus’s boons:

  • Heaven Flourish: This boon will allow you to inflict Blitz on your opponents with your special attacks. As mentioned before, you might be using specials more with Umbral Flames, so it’s a good choice.
  • Heaven Strike: This particular boon will let you inflict Blitz on the opponents via normal attacks.
  • Electric Overload: With this whenever you Blitz your opponent, Electric Overload will activate, and a bolt of chain-lightning will fire from the enemy.

Choosing these skills will surely increase the overall DPS which will let you swift your way through the underworld. However dodging is as important so make sure to utilize the sprint button as much as possible.

Hammer Upgrades For The Umbral Flames

Upgrading
Upgrading the skills is also necessary to maximize the damage output (Screenshot Grab By eXputer)

In order to maximize your damage, you would also need to upgrade the weapon.

The following are the upgrades you should go for:

  • Melting Comet: This upgrade will completely change your special attack into fire and destroy 80% of the armor. That said, while it has a little drawback, it is a great choice as it can easily beat the armored enemies that become common in the later game areas.
  • Split Fire: This works really well with Hepaestus’s boons, as upon hit, the projectiles from your weapon will split. So, to split the projectiles, you will have to hit an enemy, ultimately increasing the overall DPS.

With these upgrades and boons, Umbral Flames doesn’t seem like an underwhelming weapon and does wonders in the later areas. As of now, I have done over nine playthroughs, and while Umbral Flames did disappoint me in the start, it didn’t do so when I made this build.

That is almost everything you want to know about the best Umbral Flames build in Hades 2. Making this build isn’t that hard, but it requires a good RNG, which might not be easy. That said, even if you don’t replicate this exact build, I think you would be fine, as the weapon isn’t as bad as the community has made it seem
