Activision Patents To Dynamically Customize User’s Gameplay Based On Time

No longer will a lack of time stay a concern.

Story Highlights

  • Activision has published a patent that wants to adjust users’ gameplay based on their time.
  • It will alter gameplay elements so we can get the most out of a session in the available time.
  • The patent was uploaded because players with little time may avoid trying certain games.

Activision is one of the leading gaming conglomerates in the world, and it often reflects that by bringing unique innovations to the industry. A patent published by the company now wants to personalize the gameplay for every user based on certain criteria. The doc mostly touches on using time as the deciding factor, altering several gameplay elements so players can enjoy a long game despite having little time at their disposal.

The patent dubbed “SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR THE REAL-TIME CUSTOMIZATION OF VIDEO GAME CONTENT BASED ON PLAYER DATA” will change game content for players based on the time they have to enjoy the game. In other words, scenes, levels, enemy amount, and similar factors would be adjusted so we don’t have to leave a game part unfinished after their free time runs out.

The present specification provides systems and methods for selecting portions of the player-specified game and editing or adjusting the selected portions to fit within the player-specified time period, thereby allowing the player to enjoy the gameplay experience despite time constraints,” reads the patent.

It is worth noting that time can be adjusted while playing, and Activision would still adapt and alter the gameplay to reflect changes. Gamers with less time may also have to grind less or reach important gameplay points earlier than other players to have the same fun experience in less time. The number of scenes or levels would be selected for the given time based on the average time it may take to complete them.

The company argues that many titles are available to players because of subscriptions and other services. However, they may avoid trying certain games because of having little time to play. So, it wants to manually adjust gameplay for users to ensure maximum engagement and retention in a limited time.

There is a need for video games to be designed such that they maximize player engagement and retention within the limited time available with the players and also improve the experience of playing and performing in video games for players.”

Activision mentions that games of any genre—including multiplayer ones—may also use the proposed system in some way. Additionally, the legal doc hints at changing gameplay based on other player interests. So, it remains to be seen how the devs will implement this system.

This is certainly not the only time Activision has published such a unique idea. The conglomerate often discusses such innovations in the form of patents. It also published to suggest games based on the live streams we watch. Similarly, the company has shown interest in sharing your game inventories with other players.
