Mythforce Announced By Beamdog, Its First-Person Rogue-lite with 80s Cartoon Aesthetic

Beamdog has announced its newest game called Mythforce, a rogue-lite game with an 80s cartoon aesthetic and online four-player co-op

Beamdog is no new player in the video game scene. Established by industry veterans Trent Oster (BioWare co-founder) and Cameron Tofer (former BioWare lead programmer). Being from BioWare, they brought with them years of experience in developing RPGs that are still considered to be among the greatest in the genre. Since its formation, Beamdog has mostly been occupied with bringing the critically acclaimed RPGs developed during the early years of BioWare to a newer audience, by releasing enhanced editions and mobile ports. These include the popular Baldur’s Gate series, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, among others. Now, Beamdog has Mythforce in its inventory as well, along with Axis & Allies.

While Beamdog has been re-releasing old BioWare games, it has made no new games, except for Axis & Allies 1942 Online, a strategy war game that had been in Steam Early Access since 2019, and received a full release in 2021. Ever since releasing Axis & Allies, Beamdog has been silent, until yesterday when it tweeted that it would reveal its “new original game” on G4TV’s Xplay, where they debuted Mythforce.

Mythforce is an action rogue-lite from a first-person perspective with an 80s cartoon aesthetic with four-player online co-op. The developers state that while co-op is one of the main focuses, the game is also made such that it can be played solo, with difficulty that scales as more players join the game. “As a roguelike, we want it to challenge players,” Oster said. “We expect players to fail more than they succeed. But through repeat playthroughs, they will have the ability to become more powerful through our metagame systems.”

Mythforce has four playable characters:

  1. Victoria, a tank character
  2. Rico, a close-range rogue DPS
  3. Hawkins, a long-range archer/hunter DPS
  4. Maggie, mage

This is not a full release, as Mythforce is an Epic Games Store early-access title, which unlocks on April 20th. It is currently available to add to a wishlist from the Epic Games Store, and Episode 1: Bastion of the Beastlord will be playable on April 20, 2022. Beamdog will release additional episodes and updates during Early Access, giving them a chance to incorporate feedback from Early Access community members and improve the game.

“I’m beyond excited to finally show off our team’s original work,” said Oster. “MythForce is pure, unadulterated fun— right out of the Saturday mornings of my childhood. With a simple yet satisfying game loop, it’s a big departure from the RPG classics we’re known for, but the Beamdog DNA is evident if you know where to look.”

This is also not the first time that a game has been announced on G4TV. Mina the Hollower, the next game from Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club, was revealed on a livestream there before achieving its full Kickstarter in mere hours. How much this reveal helps Beamdog, only time will tell.
