Borderlands 3 Has Now Shipped Over 18 Million Units Globally

In its most recent financial report, Take-Two Interactive revealed that Borderlands 3 has surpassed 18 million sales across the globe, making it one of 2K’s most successful titles. Following its last sales update in May 2022, which put it at 15 million shipments, the Gearbox Software game has sold another three million copies and as per the documents, has also become the fastest-selling title published by 2K, setting new company records.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of 2K, revealed this and much more regarding the American publisher in its Q1 2024 financial report. As per the company’s earnings release, the sales of Borderlands 3 mean that the critically acclaimed shooting franchise has now sold a whopping 81 million copies since its inception 15 years ago.

As a result of these updated sales figures, Borderlands has leaped up a few places in the highest-selling franchises in gaming ranking. The 2K series has now sold more copies than Mortal Kombat, Animal Crossing, The Witcher, and Red Dead among many other notable franchises, cementing itself among the most popular video game IPs with its first trilogy.

When you consider the critical reception of these titles, this success doesn’t seem as surprising. Every game in the series from Borderlands 3 to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has received acclaim from fans and critics alike. The co-op gameplay and looter shooter mechanics of the franchise have been consistent standouts in its titles, with its humor also getting significant praise in every entry.

According to Take-Two, 2012’s Borderlands 2 is the best-selling game in the series with over 27 million copies sold globally as of now. In addition, the 2012 action role-playing game is also the highest-selling video game in 2K’s history, which is a big deal considering how the company publishes titles for widely popular franchises like WWE and NBA.

Besides Borderlands Take-Two also gave us updates about other popular IPs from 2K. According to the documents, Bioshock has now sold more than 42 million units in its lifetime, with Sid Meier’s Civilization also being a special standout with over 67 million shipments across the globe. With Tiny Tina’s Wonderland also being a fresh new success for the publisher, its future is certainly looking bright.

The existence of such well-known IPs makes the achievement of Borderlands 3 even more impressive. With a film adaptation from Eli Roth in the works and set to release in August 2024, these sales numbers are surely going to improve even more. Hence, Borderland’s fans have a lot to wait for in the near future, and we hope one of those things is Borderlands 4.
