Fallout 76 Is Not A Hardcore Survival Game

According To Todd Howard

Fallout 76 is kind of a spin-off in the Fallout franchise. It is not Fallout 5, as most people would have you believe and the next Fallout game should indeed be single player. This seems to be something that Bethesda is testing with. Todd Howard does not want people to call Fallout 76 a survival game and the following is what he had to say regarding the matter:

We avoid the word ‘survival’, because people’s minds immediately go to DayZ and Rust and certain other games, and those comparisons are not really accurate for what we’re doing, If you think about the survival modes we’ve made in Fallout 4, it has that vibe. Fallout 76, although it’s an online game, when I play it, I mostly still play it solo. We like those experiences as much as our fans do.

Now that I think about it, the word survival does remind me of DayZ, but that could be me. Other people might not think about the game at all. But this is a good statement and one that you should consider if you are interested in buying the game when it comes out later this November. This is a multiplayer game and Bethesda is known for making some pretty good single player games. But that is not where the company is headed. According to Todd Howard:

It doesn’t mark the future. Corporately we’ve done a mix—people forget sometimes. Elder Scrolls Online is one of the biggest online games in the world, we have Fallout Shelter which we keep updating, and Elder Scrolls: Legends.

Indeed there are other games that the company is working on right now that are indeed single player and there are upcoming games that have been announced that are also single player in nature. So you do not need to worry about the direction that Bethesda is taking. VP of Marketing Pete Hines also talked about how Fallout 76 is not what everyone expects it to be. The following is what he had to say in this regard:

But the truth is this game is not what everybody expects or immediately jumps to. I understand when you hear ‘online’ or you hear ‘multiplayer’ or ‘PvP’ that people jump to ‘well, it’s an MMO’ or ‘it’s a free-for-all where everybody’s just shooting each other’ or ‘I’m gonna get griefed constantly by other players’. And the fact is, this just doesn’t fit into the mould of anything else, because that’s what Bethesda Game Studios does.

So there you have it, folks, that is Fallout 76 for you from the big boss man himself.
