Lionsgate Confirms AAA John Wick Video Game In Development

Ferocious frickin' fangs.

Story Highlights

  • John Wick is one of the most well-renowned action movie franchises in Hollywood, starring Keanu Reeves as the lead protagonist while featuring the rest of the cast to be star-studded as well. The movie series spans a total of four movies, with the recent-most release having launched in March 2023.
  • Following the launch of John Wick 4, the developers have announced spin-off projects pertaining to the John Wick universe. One of them, called The Continental, is a prequel television show while Ballerina sees a female actress leading the series.
  • As per a new earnings report published by Lionsgate, company chairman Joseph Drake has subtly hinted that the plan is to make an entry in the “AAA video gaming space” in the context of John Wick.

Baba Yaga is a supreme savage in cinema; imagine what he could do in a video game? The legendary John Wick franchise built on the ideology of “Gun fu” has now spanned four mainline movies, with two spin-offs planned to release in 2023 and next year as well. Now, as per the recent Lionsgate earnings call that has seemingly taken us series fans aback, a AAA John Wick video game title is in development

This has only been casually hinted at by Lionsgate’s chairman Joseph Drake during the Lionsgate Fiscal 2023 Fourth Quarter Conference Call. When asked by Truist Securities’ Matthew Thornton about the future of the John Wick franchise and any developments on a John Wick video game, Drake replied with the following, affirming that progress is underway on multiple fronts.

As it relates to the video game, we are continuing to have those conversations. There’s a ton of energy around it. What I would say is with the success of John Wick 4 that actually you see growth from 3 to 4 which is very rare in any franchise, much less an action franchise, creates a lot of energy and excitement in the company. It does the same with filmmakers.
And we’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television, really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience.”

It’s worth noting though that this isn’t the first time a AAA John Wick title has been alluded at. As reported by IndieWire originally, Lionsgate executes have already “fielded proposals” in the past for a major AAA game set in the John Wick universe. The industry giant’s CEO—Jon Feltheimer—had this to say about the whole scene back in November 2022:

I don’t want to get ahead of myself here, but we believe there is a big AAA game to be made out of ‘John Wick.’ We have been fielding proposals. We certainly are interested in moving that forward, but I don’t want to say anything more about that at this time.”

Side by side, there has been a John Wick game released for the PlayStation 4 already, but don’t think of it anywhere in the neighborhood of AAA status. The title is strategy-oriented and sports cartoonish visuals from top to bottom. On the contrary, Lionsgate is cooking up something much grander than John Wick Hex, that’s for sure.

John Wick 4 has ended the series on a spectacular note for now, finishing off the endeavors of John in guns-blazing fashion with a touch of unprecedented suspense. If you haven’t watched the movie or any of its predecessors yet for that matter, you’re missing out, big time.
