The Monster Hunter Franchise Has Now Sold 90 Million Copies Worldwide

Monster Hunter World remains the best-selling game in the franchise in the new Capcom Platinum Titles update.

Story Highlights

  • According to the new sales update from Capcom, the Monster Hunter franchise has sold 90 million units globally.
  • Monster Hunter World is still the best-selling game of the series and in Capcom history.
  • It is now the 2nd highest-selling Capcom franchise, only behind Resident Evil.

Monster Hunter has been around since 2004 and has released amazing games throughout these 19 years. But, it wasn’t until Monster Hunter World the series became a worldwide phenomenon and set several sales milestones. Now, the game has reached another landmark in its history, continuing its successful run.

According to the new Platinum Titles update from Capcom, the Monster Hunter franchise has now sold 90 million copies worldwide. This comes 3 months after the last update, which put it at 88 million sales. Hence, the series has sold 2 million units during the last 3 months, making it a very successful period for the series.

In the last few years, Monster Hunter has become a name synonymous with role-playing games. Even though it was a popular franchise in Japan before 2018, it never really got mainstream attention overseas. But, since the release of Monster Hunter World, the series has become one of Capcom’s biggest original IPs.

All of the releases since the 2018 title have sold millions of copies and garnered critical acclaim. The franchise has become so popular in this short period that it even got a film adaptation. Granted, it was really bad, and Paul W.S. Anderson butchered another Capcom IP. Horrible adaptations are a part of most gaming franchises now.

Hence, the series has become one of the gaming world’s most popular IPs due to its recent success. During this run, it has achieved many feats, including having the best-selling game in Capcom history with Monster Hunter: World. The company recently updated the sales of its Platinum Titles after its 3rd quarter report came out.

According to these updated lists of worldwide sales, the Monster Hunter franchise has reached another milestone. It has now sold 90 million copies globally, fulfilling a new accomplishment. These sales numbers are accurate as of December 31, 2022, the day Capcoms 3rd quarter ended.

Previously, the series was at 88 million worldwide sales after the last quarterly report from the company. This quarterly report recorded sales up to 30th September 2022. Meaning the Monster Hunter franchise further sold 2 million copies during these 3 months, which is a competent performance.

It had no new releases during this period, as Monster Hunter Rise‘s PlayStation and Xbox versions only came out last month. Hence, the older releases had strong legs to push it to the 90 million mark.

Monster Hunter Rise contributed the most to this cause. It sold 500k copies during this time, while its Sunbreak expansion also made 500k sales. When you consider all of these sales are on the Nintendo Switch and PC, this landmark becomes even more remarkable.

Overall, Monster Hunter Rise has sold 11.7 million copies around the world. Meanwhile, the Sunbreak expansion has 4.9 million unit sales, according to Capcom figures. With the other home consoles still to factor in this quarter, the 2021 release will do even bigger numbers.

Even with the success of Rise, Monster Hunter World remains the best-selling game in the franchise. It sold another 100k copies during the October to December period, bringing its lifetime total up to 18.6 million. So, not only is it the top-selling Monster Hunter game, but also the No.1 selling Capcom product of all time.

Other games in the franchise also retailed well and helped it reach the 90 million mark. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, an expansion pack for the 2018 RPG, sold 300k units. As a result, its lifetime sales are not up to 10 million, making it another big success for the series.

Spin-off titles also made an impact, as Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin also sold 100k units. Its lifetime sales are now at 1.7 million, making it an impressive success. The spin-off only came out on Nintendo Switch and PC, which lends further credence to the sales.

Overall, the Monster Hunter franchise is still the 2nd highest-selling Capcom IP. Resident Evil is still No.1 with 135 million lifetimes sales, giving it a big edge over the franchise’s 90 million. However, the signs are looking good for the RPG series.

It continued to grow this quarter and is showing no signs of stopping. Overall sales will only increase with Monster Hunter Rise coming out on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One. Who knows, with a few more successful releases, it will even surpass Resident Evil.
