NieR: Automata’s Worldwide Sales Exceed 7 Million

On a side note, NieR Replicant had sold over 1.5 million copies.

Square Enix has posted updated sales charts for two of the games the action-RPG NieR series, Nier: Automata and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139. Square Enix had expected that both of these games will do good, but might not surpass NieR, the first game of the series.

MAJOR TAKEAWAYS

  • NieR Automata and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, have sold over 7 million and 1.5 million copies, respectively, as announced by Square Enix on Twitter.
  • The sales of these games have surpassed Square Enix’s estimates.
  • The boost in Nier: Automata sales is being attributed to the Nintendo release of the game last month.
  • According to the figures reported in June last year, the game had sold 6 million copies worldwide.

But it appears both of these games keep exceeding Square Enix’s expectations. According to the updated numbers, Nier: Automata sales have exceeded 7 million sales units, an increase of 1 million from 6 million last year in June. The great increase in sales is attributed to the Nintendo release of the game last month.

While NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 saw an increase of 500,000, taking the sales to 1.5 million from last year’s 1 million sold units. The reported sales charts include sales not only in Japan but worldwide.

NieR: Automata, developed by PlatinumGames, is a sequel to NieR(2010). Although set in the same universe, the events of this game take place thousands of years after the first game. The game also shares no narrative with the original game.

The game follows two main protagonists, 2B, a female combat android, and 9S, a male combat android. Both of them are part human-created YoRHa forces. They are tasked with combating alien-created machines. A third playable character, A2, is added later on in the game.

The game was released in 2017, first on PlayStation 4 and, a few months later, on PC. The Xbox One version was released a year later in 2018. While the Nintendo Switch version of the game was released just more than a month ago, on the 6th of October.

The game greatly exceeded Square Enix’s expectations. It sold more than 1.5 million copies in just two months easily surpassing NieR which had sold less than 200k copies in two months. The success of this game prompted the company to make NieR into a proper franchise.

The other game, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 is a remaster of the original NieR game. The game’s story is the same as its original version with a slight change in timeline.

It was released on 22 April 2021, originally for Japan and Asia, for PS4 and Xbox One. The game was later on released for Europe and North America, and for PC two days later on 23rd of the April. The remaster did much better than the original release. It sold over 1 million copies within 3 months of its release.

The sales numbers for both of these are a good sign for the series’ fans. These numbers are sure to tempt Square Enix to consider investing more in the franchise. Which could mean more games for the series.
