Former Rockstar Dev Warns Players To Have Lower Expectations With GTA 6

The game might not be too different from its predecessor.

Story Highlights

  • A former Rockstar Games dev has warned players to keep their expectations in check with GTA 6.
  • He clarifies that there won’t be a huge technological leap in GTA 6 compared to its predecessor.
  • The tech is not progressing as fast as before, as we saw in the GTA San Andreas To GTA 4 days.

In an interview with SanInPlay on YouTube, the former Rockstar Games dev, Obbe Vermeij, warned players to have lower expectations with GTA 6. He argues there won’t be a huge technological leap in the next game, as many fans anticipate from past experiences. The difference in consoles is just not as big anymore due to slow technological progress over the years. However, that does not mean the sequel will fail to impress the fans.

While some fans might be left disappointed because of “high expectations,” knowing Rockstar, it might just “pull it off” and develop an “amazing” sequel. I’ve also held similar views that GTA 6 will not reinvent gaming as we know it.

Like, the difference between PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 was enormous, and PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 is not that not that big, right? So you don’t really have that technology jump to make things different and better,” says Obbe Vermeij.

Slow Technological Progress Means We’ll Only See Incremental Improvements In GTA 6

Unfortunately, slow technological growth between console generations means that GTA 6 will not have the groundbreaking innovations we’ve seen in previous GTA releases. For example, the huge jump between GTA San Andreas and GTA 4 was only possible because of how fast the tech was progressing. So, many elements in the last entry might only see incremental improvements in the upcoming game.

Because you can never have that jump. […] The jump from GTA 2 to GTA 3 was big, and from San Andreas to GTA 4 was very big. I don’t think we can ever see a jump like that again,” says the dev.

All in all, it’s worth remembering that Obbe Vermeij is not working on GTA 6 in any capacity. While he’s been a major part of developing the GTA series, he departed from Rockstar after working as a technical director in 2009. So, the upcoming open-world entry could surprise us all with major changes that not even former developers are expecting.
