GTA 6 Reportedly Has A Whopping $2 Billion Budget

Rockstar is gearing up to make history with GTA's long-awaited return.

Story Highlights

  • A recent rumor has suggested that GTA 6 will reportedly be made over a budget of $2 billion.
  • The rumor takes its origin from the biggest gaming leak from last year, the leaker claimed the budget in one of his conversations with his group.
  • The $2 billion will reportedly be the total allocated budget for the game that includes everything in development and advertisement.
  • If the rumor proves itself, GTA 6 will be the most expensive game in history.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is rumored to have a weighty budget of $2 billion and is already being called the “the most expensive entertainment product of all time.” The sixth entry in the popular GTA series is expected to launch in 2025. The game has seen rounds of leaks and rumors since the start of its development making it one of the most highly anticipated games of all time.

Now what makes this recent rumor credible is a year-ago massive GTA 6 leak where a 17-year-old leaker normally known as “Pot” revealed a hefty package of 90 unseen clips from the game. The leak proved to be insane, revealed a myriad of details about the upcoming game, and left Rockstar devastated. However, the company backfired and the leaker got arrested thanks to the FBI.

Later on, a group of data miners on Twitter revealed a number of screenshots showing a conversation between the leaker and his group. In one of the screenshots, pot claimed that GTA 6 has been in development since 2014 and Rockstar has already made an investment of $2 billion.

As absurd as it sounds $2 billion cannot be the amount that has already been spent on a game that is still a few years ahead of its release. With Pot’s claim, analytics made a calculated guess that the aforementioned massive amount would be the total budget allocated for the upcoming game which includes the whole development and advertisement.

It is still somewhat unclear whether $2 billion is the actual total amount dedicated to GTA 6 or just the number Rockstar has already spent, in any case, the latter sounds ridiculous. But, there’s also no doubt in the company’s ability to surpass its budget with the sales when it comes to the Grand Theft Auto series.

For comparison, while no official details were shared, GTA 5’s total budget is estimated to be around about $265 million, making it one of the most heavily budgeted games at that time. And, yet Rockstar had no issues making back its initial cost, as the game cleared more than $1 billion in sales in just three days of its launch.

What’s more is if the above rumor turns out to be true, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be crowned as the most expensive game in history, leaving the $500 million title, Star Citizen behind.
