Star Wars Outlaws Director Says Ghost Of Tsushima Was His “Biggest Reference” During Development

In an interview with GamesRadar, the creative director of Star Wars Outlaws, Julian Gerighty, clarified that Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima was his “biggest reference” during development. The upcoming entry has been greatly inspired by many elements nailed in the Samurai title, including the perfect show of power fantasy. The “story, the world, the character, everything” comes together, with the gameplay guiding everything.

It’s super interesting because my biggest reference was Ghost of Tsushima, which is more on the Kurosawa side of inspiration than the Western, the John Ford side of the inspiration for George Lucas. […] But I think that Ghost of Tsushima, what I loved about it was this purity of having a player fantasy and really leaning into it,” says Julian Gerighty.

The director also praised Red Dead Redemption 2, claiming it nails the open world by not being “a checklist of activities that are repeated often.” Both of these titles have been used as references to craft arguably the best Star Wars experience we’ve seen in the industry. However, the depth of their influence will only be possible once we get our hands on the game. 

Star Wars Outlaws Will Let You Be A Scheming Scoundrel

Star Wars Outlaws will have its player fantasy guide the gameplay as you traverse the galaxy. I think it’s clear that Kay Vess is far from an elegant protagonist like Jin Sakai, as her player fantasy will revolve around being an infamous outlaw in the galaxy. So, we’ll see a completely different take on the power fantasy, as Kay scavenges to survive across the planets.

For those not in the know, Star Wars Outlaws is set to come out on August 30, 2024, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. While there have been some negative previews in the past, some have also compared the game to titles like Uncharted for having many matching elements.
