Story Highlights
- Ghost of Yotei is an upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, currently in development for the PS5.
- Sucker Punch Productions, the developer, has confirmed that it plans on considering franchise spin-offs.
- The franchise, beginning with Ghost of Tsushima, will be subject to multiple entries down the line.
Ghost of Yotei has reared its head during the recent PlayStation State of Play, being by and large the biggest announcement of the entire event. The game succeeds the 2020-released Ghost of Tsushima, taking on the story of a brand-new protagonist and yet another adventure for players to embark on. What’s more, is that Sucker Punch — the developer — plans on making this flagship IP a full-blown franchise with “spinoffs” and a movie that’s already in the works.
Speaking to The New York Times, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, the Creative Directors of Ghost of Tsushima, have affirmed that Sucker Punch will give the game the full franchise treatment. But first, all attention is directed toward this upcoming iteration, one that had the Sucker Punch team taking “research trips” to Japan’s north side, observing Mount Yotei up close.
I sat there for two hours just staring at the mountain. It was stunning,” said Nate Fox.
On another occasion, the developers also visited Shiretoko National Park, a popular tourist attraction in Hokaido. What the team experienced there is something Sucker Punch wants to bring to Ghost of Yotei just as well.
Inside the park, you have to watch a video telling you about the dangers of bears. Being in this incredibly beautiful park with jagged cliffs and water, yet all the time being aware there were dangerous bears, was electrifying. We strive to bring that into the video game – that feeling of danger.”
Ghost Of Yotei Will Move On From Jin Sakai
Keeping the “Ghost of” moniker seems like the right decision to me. That way, Sucker Punch can incorporate as many stories as it wants in subsequent renditions, without having to tie itself forcefully to a single character or setting. A world of possibilities really from here on out.

Ghost of Tsushima is no less than an icon in the video game industry, sporting impeccable storytelling, great gameplay, and breathtaking visuals. Elsewhere in the NY Times interview, it has also been noted that the game rolled over 13 million units as of 2024, a fairly commendable milestone for an action-adventure title that’s only been available on two platforms for the larger part of its life.
