Fighting games are a big part of the gaming culture. Arcade fighting games have been around since the 80s and still continue to have a big impact. You cannot talk about major fighting games without mentioning the Tekken series.
Tekken is a big part of pop culture and a huge phenomenon, its e-gaming project just emphasizes how popular it is. It’s arguably the most famous arcade fighting game franchise of all time. Games from the series have received rave reviews and the sales speak for themselves.
More recently, Tekken 7 came out in 2015 and the last main installment has just set a new milestone. Tekken 7 has now sold over 9 million copies worldwide and has recorded the highest sales for any game in the series. Katsuhiro Harada, the Chief Producer of Fighting Games at Tekken, announced this news on his official Twitter account.
"TEKKEN7" had achieved Over 9 million sales (The highest record in the series).
and Recorded Over 53 million copies sales for the series.「鉄拳7」実販売数がシリーズ過去最高となる900万本を突破しました(シリーズ累計は5300万本超)、皆様に感謝いたします.#TEKKEN #TEKKEN7 #鉄拳 pic.twitter.com/mtOUaUtzHe

In the tweet, he also mentioned how the series has also reached another landmark in total sales. Overall, the Tekken series has shipped over 53 million copies worldwide since its inception. As a result of this sales push from Tekken 7, the series is now the 46th highest-selling gaming franchise of all time.
It has overtaken God of War to take this spot and is just behind Civilization, Battlefield, and Metal Gear now. Getting into the top 50 biggest selling gaming series of all time is a remarkable feat. The gaming industry has so many big franchises and being in the top 50 really shows the series’ popularity.
Saying all that, Tekken 7 reached this 9-million sales milestone 7 years after its release. Last November, the game only had 8 million copies sold worldwide, so it has reached this milestone by selling 1 million copies in nearly 6 months.
Keeping that in mind, players hope that BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment will fast-track the next Tekken project after this. It’s obvious that Tekken is getting even more popular day by day, so a new game in the franchise will certainly sell well.
As of yet, nothing is official about a new game from the series after Tekken 7. The notorious NVIDIA GeForce Now leak did have Tekken 8 as one of its upcoming games. However, that is obviously just speculation and nothing is certain.
