In its latest earning call, Take-Two Interactive revealed that The Outer Worlds has now sold over 5 million copies globally. Previously, the action role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment had reached 4 million in sales as of August 2021. Hence, it has sold one million plus copies in under 2 years, following the announcement of the sequel of the game.
Take-Two Interactive put The Outer Worlds among the company’s major individual titles in its new earnings report. As per the title, the RPG is one of the 14 franchises of the video game Juggernaut that have sold over 5 million copies globally. In addition, this list also included Borderlands, Max Payne, GTA, Mafia, and many other significant franchises. Hence, it’s pretty clear Take-Two holds the IP in high regard.
Obsidian developed and released The Outer Worlds with publisher Private Division back in October 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game was an instant hit and received universal acclaim from critics and fans alike. Its role-playing elements, writing, narrative, and soundtrack were the significant standouts in what many considered to be 2019’s Game of the Year.
The Outer Worlds did not win any of the awards it earned nominations for at the 2019 Game Awards. But, it earned some other major honors like the GOTY at the 2020 New York Game Awards. Furthermore, it went on to win RPG of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards and Best Game Writing at the Nebula Awards. The Obsidian RPG got nominated for and won many other honors, showcasing the critical acclaim surrounding it.
Even before reaching this 5 million landmark, the RPG performed competently in sales. The Outer Worlds sold about two million units in February 2020 just four months after its release. Prior to achieving four million units sold in August 2021, it already had sales of over three million by May. This success lead to the game’s release on the Switch in June 2020, and next-gen consoles in March this year.
Around this time, Xbox and Bethesda also announced the RPG’s sequel at their joint presentation at E3. Since the announcement trailer at the June event, no other news about the sequel has come out. No release date is official and players haven’t even seen any gameplay. The only thing we know for sure is that The Outer Worlds 2 will release on PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.
None of the parties have confirmed or denied if the game will launch on PlayStation 5 so that aspect is a mystery. Hopefully, we get more news about the sequel soon and see it release on all platforms. Until then, you can play The Outer Worlds on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.
