Bloober Team Rejected Saw Game To Create Blair Witch

"We decided to take Blair Witch because the universe has many opportunities to build something new."

Bloober Team is one of the biggest video game developers based in Kraków, Poland, and is well-known for making Blair Witch and the more recently released The Medium. In October 2021, the company caught the interest of the biggest holding company in the world, Tencent, and it seems like it hasn’t been the only one.

According to a recent interview with IGN, the CEO of Bloober Team, Piotr Babieno, stated that Bloober Team was offered the chance to make a Saw video game but opted to create its take on Blair Witch instead. At the recent Digital Dragons conference in Poland, Piotr Babieno revealed a great deal during his conversation with IGN.

Piotr Babieno said that they have talked with many movie studios and many even came to them. Furthermore, he said that they have worked with United Talent Agency (UTA), which happens to have very good relationships with major studios.

“We talked with [multiple studios], and some of them came to us and [said] ‘Okay, guys, you are focusing on horror and we would like to work with you.’ [But] the licensors were very straight: ‘We would like to do this story. We would like to have the game in 2021 [to coincide with our movie launch],” and so on. We decided, ‘Okay, [this is] not what we would like to do.’,” he said.

Bloober Team was supposedly offered straight deals from licensors saying that they wanted to work with the company. However, the company decided not to work with the licensors and Piotr Babieno told, “this is not what we do.”

He further went to clear out the mist surrounding the upcoming Silent Hill game. He explained to IGN that Bloober Team wants to make its own games and talked about a secret project, referring to it as “the project we can’t talk about.”

Amidst all this, Piotr Babieno also revealed that Lionsgate offered the company to work on its Saw franchise but Bloober Team rejected and worked on its own Blair Witch franchise instead. The company also had other offers to work with but it continued working on Blair Witch.

“Lionsgate came to us and said, ‘Guys, we love [Bloober’s breakout game] Layers of Fear. We saw what you are doing with Observer, so we would like to work with you. We know that you would like to do your own games, so please, this is our list of our horror IPs; choose one.’ We could [have chosen] Saw, which is more popular than Blair Witch, but we decided to take Blair Witch because the universe has many opportunities to build something new. That was the reason why we chose this project,” he said.

Currently, Bloober Team constantly gets requests to work with movie studios, or licensors “because Bloober Team in some way is recognizable.” Unfortunately, the company is not capable of handling that many projects at once and it has decided to stick with what it is currently working on.

As of now, Bloober Team is working on three projects. The first is a project with Konami, that is said to be Silent Hill by many people. The second is a new IP with Private Division, while the last is an unannounced game in its pre-production stages.
