Guerilla Games Is Working On An Online Iteration Of The Horizon Series

The job listings are for an unannounced online project.

A few months ago Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Global Head, Herman Hulst, had said in an interview that Sony plans to invest more into GaaS(Game-as-a-service) games based on its IPs, such as the Horizon series. It is intended to diversify their investment and move away from solely focusing on conventional single-player titles.

He further revealed that they plan to launch ten GaaS games by the year 2026. A very ambitious claim to say the least. And now it appears they are fully on track with this project as job listings from Guerrilla Games confirm the development of a Horizon series multiplayer game.

MAJOR TAKEAWAYS

  • The latest job listings from Guerrilla Games confirm the development of the Horizon series-based multiplayer game.
  • The job description for a few important positions revealed that the game will have co-op as well.
  • This is part of Sony’s investment in GaaS games. Sony intends to release ten live-service games by 2026.
  • The number of job listings suggests that the project is still in early development.

The studio, a subsidiary of the larger PlayStation Studios, is looking for “17” new hires for a yet-to-be-named “online project.” That project was later confirmed to be a Horizon-related project in a tweet by Guerrilla Games.

The description on the listing for a few important positions revealed that the project will have a co-op multiplayer. The listings further revealed this might be a monster hunter-themed game.

Job description for Senior Machine Combat Designer

A few months ago Guerrilla Games had announced a partnership with NCSoft to develop Horizon MMORPG. But these listings seem to be for a different game. As the studio revealed it to be an internal project.

The announcement for the project read as follows,

A new internal team is developing a separate Online Project set in Horizon’s Universe. Featuring a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look, friends will be able to explore the majestic wilds of Horizon together.”

The amount of hiring being done suggests that the project is still in the very early days. And it could take a year before we get a proper announcement about it.

Guerrilla Games’ Amsterdam studio is at the center of developing the project. Most of the hiring is being done for it. The studio also listed jobs for two other projects, one was labeled as SP(Single-Player), and the other one as EP(External-Project). Not much info was provided for the two other projects.

This is an opportunity for Sony to get its user base into live-service games. Many PlayStation players are single-player only. But with the live-service games based on Sony’s single-player IPs, it can be changed.

This is also Sony’s first attempt at a live-service game. They have tons of powerful and well-established IPs to base them on. But whether or not it is a success only time will tell.

Will Sony’s investment in live-service games be a success? What do you think? Do tell us in the comments section below.
