Microsoft Claims It Can Make Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 Run Smoothly On Switch

Despite Switch's outdated hardware, Microsoft says it can make the Call of Duty games fly on the console.

Story Highlights

  • Microsoft claims it can optimize Call of Duty Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 to run natively on Nintendo Switch.
  • Microsoft argued that the game already runs smoothly on Xbox One, which was released years before Switch.
  • Microsoft also claimed that Call of Duty Warzone is powered by an engine that can be optimized to run the game on a wide range of hardware.

Microsoft has claimed that it can make Call of Duty: Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 run natively on a Nintendo Switch in a recently published response to the UK regulator’s remedies notice.

Earlier this year, Microsoft signed a 10-year binding contract with Nintendo to bring the Call of Duty franchise to the Switch.

However, this contract raised many questions about how Microsoft would pull it off, considering Switch’s outdated hardware and the fact that no Call of Duty game has been released for the hand-held console yet.

It was also expected that Microsoft might bring the Call of Duty franchise to Switch’s successor when it eventually comes out.

According to Microsoft’s response, it can optimize the game to run on Nintendo Switch as Call of Duty: Warzone 2 already runs on GPU cards released as far back as 2015.

Microsoft's response claims that CoD Warzone's engine can run the game on a wide range of hardware.

Microsoft added that the game engine behind Warzone is optimized to run on various hardware devices. Additionally, Warzone 2 already runs on Xbox One, which was released back in 2013. Considering that Switch was released in 2017, it could also be optimized to run on it, Microsoft claims.

Microsoft also claimed that it would use similar “standard techniques” as used on games such as Apex Legends, Fortnite, Doom Eternal, and Crysis 3 to optimize Call of Duty Warzone, as these games have already been ported to Switch.

However, as in the case of Doom Eternal, these games do not run at optimal performance on Switch and struggle to keep up to 30 FPS. On the other hand, Call of Duty: Warzone 2 struggles to maintain 60 FPS on last-gen consoles.

Call of Duty Warzone is a battle royale game where around 200 players are dropped on a massive map, and the last surviving player wins the game.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision has been a hot topic in the game industry for about a year now. It has seen its fair share of ups and downs and is likely to continue for a while now.
