Nintendo Switch Online Vouchers Could Be Returning

The offer ended in North America a few years ago, but it could be making a return.

Story Highlights

  • Nintendo Switch Online game vouchers could be making a comeback after Nintendo’s YouTube channel posted a now-unlisted video about them.
  • These vouchers were a part of the online service in the North American region before 2019.
  • In the promo video, we see current games like Pokemon Scarlet, and Violet, meaning the video is new.
  • Fans think this will become official at the rumored February Nintendo Direct, but only time will tell.

A few years back, the Nintendo Switch Online subscription had a really neat park that saved players money. Game Vouchers from the Online service allowed you to buy more than one game in a cut-price package. However, to the dismay of fans, the company discontinued this feature in 2019, at least in North America.

The official YouTube account posted a video about Nintendo Switch game vouchers, indicating their return. Even though the video was taken down immediately, fans got their hands on it. And, this might be the first unintentional leak that confirms the return of online game vouchers.

Like other major players in the gaming world, Nintendo also has an online subscription service. Nintendo Switch Online is the company’s PlayStation Plus equivalent and offers a lot of perks. After Nintendo Network and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, it is the company’s third-generation online subscription.

Besides allowing you to play online multiplayer, it gives you access to cloud saving and voice chat through the app. In addition to this, you can access a library consisting of a myriad of old Nintendo games. The games in this service are from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and SNES consoles.

An addition tier which came out in 2021, allows you access to even more games and other perks. Nintendo Switch Online+ Expansion Pack added Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games to the game library of the online service. Players also got free access to paid DLCs of games like Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Even with all of these benefits, fans have sorely missed one Nintendo Switch Online feature: Game Vouchers. Until 2019, these vouchers went for $99.98 and allowed you to redeem any two games from the voucher catalog. This allowed you to pick up Nintendo Switch titles at a lesser price, which is big considering how rare sales are for Switch exclusives.

Nintendo ended this perk for the North American region in 2019, even though they are still available in some regions. However, this feature may now be making a return, thanks to a mistake from the Nintendo YouTube channel. Someone accidentally posted a video regarding the return of Nintendo Switch Online game vouchers.

The slip-up has been covered now, and the video is private, but it is out all over the internet. As you can see, the video walks you through how the game vouchers work. We can see Pokemon Scarlet and Violet pop up in the video, clearing any doubt of it being old.

Players can use Nintendo Switch Online game vouchers to buy new games and save money. According to the promo, titles like Splatoon 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Bayonetta 3, and the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild can be purchased. Hence, this feature doesn’t limit you to old games only.

By using two vouchers to purchase two different games, you can save up to $20. Normally, you would have to pay $120 for brand-new Nintendo Switch first-party games. However, you can get them for $100 via vouchers, saving you some money.

The Nintendo Switch Online base subscription is $20, so you have to keep that addition in mind. Other than buying already-released games, you can also pre-order some games. Game vouchers are usable for 12 months and don’t need to be used at the same time.

So, this is a really consumer-friendly service, and that is why fans want it back. Most probably, it will make a return as the video is legit but just came out before time. Fans are assuming that a new Nintendo Direct is going to happen this February, and this may be a part of it.

Hopefully, the unlisted YouTube video is correct, and we get to see the return of this feature soon. Do you think Nintendo Switch Online game vouchers are coming back? Tell us in the comments below.
