The Next Witcher Game Could Have Co-Op And PvE

A job posting from CDPR is seeking for candidates with multiplayer experience.

  • CD Projekt Red is developing multiple new games.
  • These games could have multiplayer components, according to job postings.
  • One of these titles is a new Witcher game.

CD Projekt Red, developer of the Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher games, is hard at work developing multiple new titles. They are currently in the development of 3 new The Witcher games, The Witcher 1 remake, a new Cyberpunk game, and a brand new IP.

A number of job postings for the Boston-based studio point to a multiplayer element in the game. This is not surprising as CDPR itself has said in the past that multiplayer will be a part of future games. Job postings indicate that people with co-op multiplayer experience are desired.

The Molasses Flood is known for being the developer of one of the upcoming The Witcher titles at CDPR, which is where these job postings are for. In one posting for a Senior Multiplayer Designer, the job description is as follows:

CD PROJEKT RED is looking for a Senior Multiplayer Designer to support The Molasses Flood development studio in their own ambitious project. The person in this role will help drive the vision and implementation of the multiplayer experience in our game. Working alongside the Lead Multiplayer Designer and Design Director, you will actively work on engaging multiplayer gameplay features, game modes, player progression and social systems, driving them all from concept to implementation.”

The following were desired experiences for a candidate:

  • At least 6 years of overall game design experience, ideally in a multiplayer or core gameplay position, with at least 1 AA/AAA shipped title with strong multiplayer design elements.
  • Very high proficiency working with Unreal Engine 4 and/or Unreal Engine 5.
  • Experience with co-op multiplayer design.
  • Highly passionate about multiplayer games and systems (game modes, class design, player progression, social activities, etc).

If we are imagining what multiplayer could look like in a Witcher game, it seems most likely any co-op would be similar to the co-op mode in Elden Ring. Being able to summon other players into your world to fight a challenging boss.

It is good to see CDPR return to developing multiplayer. A multiplayer GTA-like component was in development for Cyberpunk 2077 but was canceled after the launch of the mode due to a botched release.

CD Projekt Red is also moving quickly with its new The Witcher games. CDPR is developing a brand new trilogy and expects all 3 to release in a 6-year window with each other. On top of a new Cyberpunk game and a new IP, it seems like CDPR will be busy. But with recent expansions and studio acquisitions, the CD Projekt team is bigger than ever.

Back in March, CDPR announced the first of these new games. It may be a few years before we play these games, but CD Projekt is laser-focused on developing and releasing a trilogy of games in a 6-year timespan. Let’s see if they can pull it off.
