PlayStation London Studio has played a big part in enhancing Virtual Reality technology for video games. While all its virtual worlds did not accumulate the same levels of success, projects like London Heist and Blood and Truth are among its most well-famed titles. The studio went on to achieve stardom because of its achievements.
PlayStation London Studio has been long-rumored to be working on its next major project. Earlier in May 2022, job listings gave us subtle hints, revealing that the studio was brewing a fantasy-esque title with “diverse and compelling characters.” Now official particulars have finally been unveiled by the alluring team of developers.
Major Takeaway:
- PlayStation London Studio is developing an online co-op combat game set in a fantasy modern London setting.
- The cooperative action title is being built for the PlayStation 5 using the in-house Soho Engine.
- It is a break from the usual VR projects created by the team and reportedly the most ambitious game by the studio to date.
- The studio also disclosed a teaser image during the interview, which gives us the first-ever glimpse into the world of this new title.
PlayStation London Studio has shed light on its new project in early development, revealing all the juicy details we have been dying to hear. The co-studio heads of the studio, Stuart and Tara, appeared in an interview to discuss the anticipated details.
The project in question matches the aforesaid rumors and is a fantasy-based online co-op game set in a fantasy modern London setting. It also appears that the studio is taking a break from the usual VR projects this time around, and the game is being designed keeping the PlayStation 5 in mind.
Tara cites the prospect of the title, “Our next project is an online co-op combat game, which as you can see here, is set in a modern fantasy London. The key thing about this is that it’s a PlayStation 5 title—it’s not a VR game like our last title was. And it’s our most ambitious project to date.”
The teaser image gives us early glimpses of the art style chosen by the PlayStation London Studio. Moreover, it features the modern London setting hinted at by the team. We can see our main character making a stylistic pose, goblin-like monsters, and, well, a giant dragon occupying half the image.
Tara also elaborates on choosing an alternative fantasy-esque London as the game’s setting, stating, “We love that this one was based in London, as well. It’s our home city, and the idea of bringing fantasy into a believable, modern London world fills us with a lot of excitement.”
Moreover, Tara shows spirit about getting to showcase “a lot of wonder and magic.” Stuart also adds input, discussing the in-house Soho engine and why it is selected, “We’ve got a super talented team working on our in-house engine, Soho. And the key thing is that it isn’t an engine that we modified to fit PlayStation 5.”
Stuart continues, “it’s an engine that we’ve rebuilt from the ground up for this generation of hardware and the needs of the game we’re creating.” The engine will wholly complement the new title and its platform, the PlayStation 5, “It’s been designed to take full advantage of the PlayStation 5.”
The new game could turn out to be a co-op experience like Destiny or The Division amalgamated with a Fantasy flavor. However, we may not hear anything for a while as the title might remain dormant for years until the studio’s vision is fully realized.
We suggest reading the whole interview to see the radiating enthusiasm of the team. The PlayStation London Studio is argued to be among the best gaming studios; it is well-renowned for winning the best places to work award in 2018.
