Black Myth: Wukong’s First Month Sales Are Shockingly Good

No monkeying around.

Story Highlights

  • Black Myth: Wukong is one of the most sought-after action-adventure RPGs in 2024.
  • The game has sold more than 20 million copies in its first month, as announced by Ken Kutaragi.
  • Wukong has been widely regarded as one of the best games in 2024, employing a Soulslike tone.

Black Myth: Wukong was subject to a fair bit of criticism over the course of its marketing and pre-release period, but it’s safe to say that the ambitious action RPG has struck down with a shut-up call for haters by proving its overall quality. Sure, it’ll take some improvements here and there to iron out the kinks, but that’s not to say that Wukong is any less capable right now.

According to Ken Kutaragi, who is widely recognized as the “father of PlayStation,” Game Science has hit right home with the onset of Black Myth: Wukong, which has now sold a whopping 20 million copies in total (thanks Dean Takahashi). These are incredible figures for a single-player game, especially considering the time frame in which it was able to sell that much.

Following the reveal of the super-powered PS5 Pro, a common topic these days is whether Black Myth: Wukong will support some kind of upscaling to go along with the upgraded tech. In case you missed it, the PS5 Pro has a feature called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—an innate functionality that offers AI-enhanced resolution for select titles.

A ton of reservations regarding Black Myth: Wukong popped up the moment it was revealed for the first time in 2020, with the bias particularly targeting Game Science’s Chinese origins. As it turns out, this is a game not many of us expected in terms of sheer quality, and Wukong really is to thank for putting so many AAA studios to shame

I will say that there’s been a fair bit of false criticism going around for Black Myth: Wukong, with many claiming that it’s not a Soulslike. Do yourself a favor and just don’t buy into any of that nonsense. The title’s fairly difficult, packs all the bells and whistles that are tied to a traditional Soulslike, and then some.

Game Science pushed out Wukong on August 20, 2024, for the PlayStation 5 and PC, with no Xbox Series X|S version available at the moment.
