Valve Rejects Steam Machine Exclusives: “Restricting People Isn’t a Great Model”

Valve says the Steam Machine will have no exclusive games, arguing that restricting where people can play doesn't work.

Story Highlights

  • Valve engineer says Steam Machine won’t have exclusives as it isn’t a great model for them.
  • The company believes restricting where people can play is an ineffective strategy.
  • Even a potential Half-Life 3 release would seemingly not be locked to Valve’s hardware.

Platform exclusives can sell consoles, but Valve is not interested in applying that familiar strategy to the Steam Machine. The company has firmly rejected the idea of restricting its games to the upcoming hardware, arguing that limiting player choice simply “doesn’t work.”

That stance should reassure PC players concerned that future Valve releases could be used to push hardware sales. More importantly, it suggests the Steam Machine will compete through convenience and performance rather than an artificial software wall.

Valve Has No Interest In A Walled Garden

Speaking to Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais, Bloomberg reported:

“Restricting where people can play a game I don’t think is a great model, at least for us,

It is a short answer, but the reasoning is straightforward. Steam’s success is built around giving PC users an enormous library across different hardware configurations. Making a Valve title available exclusively on one device would work against that open ecosystem.

He further added:

“We’re much more interested in having the whole PC catalog as our ‘launch exclusive’.

That does not mean every Steam game will run perfectly on the machine. Compatibility, developer support, and performance remain separate issues. Valve is only confirming that it will not deliberately lock its own releases behind Steam Machine ownership.

Even Half-Life 3 Would Not Be An Exclusive

Naturally, the exclusivity question carries one enormous name: Half-Life 3. Valve has not officially announced the long-awaited sequel, so expectations still need to be kept under control. However, the company’s position indicates that any future Half-Life release would not require a Steam Machine.

That is probably the smartest decision Valve could make. Using Half-Life 3 as exclusive bait would generate hardware interest, but it would also frustrate the massive PC audience that has waited years for another mainline entry.

The Steam Machine will therefore need to succeed on its own merits. We previously examined whether it can reach the same heights as the Steam Deck, and the lack of exclusives makes that challenge even clearer.

Hardware, Not Restrictions, Must Do The Selling

Valve’s approach positions the Steam Machine as another way to access PC games and not a replacement ecosystem.

The company is also thinking beyond its current devices, with a Valve designer confirming that Steam Deck 2 is already being planned. Across both product lines, Valve appears more interested in expanding access to Steam than trapping players inside specific hardware.

That philosophy removes one potential selling point from the Steam Machine. Still, respecting player choice is a far better foundation than holding anticipated games hostage.
