Sakaguchi’s Classic Blue Dragon Gets An Unofficial PC Port

re:Blue rebuilds the 2006 RPG from scratch, launching on its 19th anniversary.

Story Highlights

  • Blue Dragon has received an unofficial PC port called re:Blue, built through static recompilation rather than emulation.
  • The 1.0 release launched on GitHub on August 28, timed to the game’s 19th anniversary in the West.
  • Players need to supply their own copy of the original game files, since none of the source assets are included.

Nineteen years after launching exclusively on Xbox 360, Blue Dragon is finally playable on PC.

What re:Blue Is

Blue Dragon was developed by Mistwalker and Artoon and published by Microsoft Game Studios, spread across three discs at release. It was built on a scenario from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, character designs from Dragon Quest artist Akira Toriyama, and a score from composer Nobuo Uematsu.

re:Blue isn’t an emulator. It’s a static recompilation, meaning the original code has been translated to run natively on PC rather than being simulated inside a virtual Xbox 360, the same approach used by the well-regarded Unleashed Recompiled project for Sonic Unleashed. Since it ships with none of the original assets, players need to combine their own legitimately owned copy of the three discs into a single executable to play.

What The Port Adds

Mistwalker
re:Blue Dragon brings a slew of imporvmenets.

The 1.0 release includes:

  • Resolution support up to 4K, in windowed or fullscreen mode
  • Aspect ratio options including 16:9, 4:3, 16:10, 21:9, and 32:9
  • An unlocked frame rate
  • Improved shadows
  • Keyboard and mouse support alongside the original controls
  • Both the game’s original achievements and new custom ones

Performance-wise, the port is built to run on modest hardware. Any GPU with at least a gigabyte of VRAM should manage it, and the developer says it runs at a steady 1080p, 60fps on Steam Deck without stressing the handheld.

Still A Work In Progress

The developer, who goes by Tom, has said the goal was quality over the low-effort AI-assisted recompilations that followed in Unleashed Recompiled’s wake. The 1.0 build is a big jump from earlier this year, when only the first of the game’s three discs was playable, and the build was full of shader and texture bugs.

The team isn’t stopping at 1.0. Work from re:Blue is being folded back into ReXGlue, the broader recompilation toolset it’s based on, and a mod bringing characters from Blue Dragon’s Nintendo DS sequel into the original game is already in development.

The project is available now on GitHub.
