GTA 6 Will Take Around 80 Hours To Complete, Says Rockstar

Rob Nelson's own playthrough, including the main story and some optional content, ran roughly 80 hours, according to a New York Times report.

Story Highlights

  • Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson says his own GTA 6 playthrough took about 80 hours.
  • That figure includes the main story plus some optional goals with narrative consequences.
  • It would make GTA 6 notably longer than any previous mainline entry in the series.

Rockstar just gave fans their first real sense of how much time GTA 6 is actually going to demand.

Speaking to The New York Times ahead of the game’s Netflix Extended Look, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson revealed he completed a playthrough of GTA 6 back in February that took roughly 80 hours. That run covered the main story along with what he described as “some optional goals with narrative ramifications,” meaning at least some side content carries weight beyond simple busywork.

Nelson framed the runtime as intentional, telling the Times he hopes players treat Leonida as a place to actually live in rather than rush through.

I hope that there will be people that want to get up, have a cup of coffee, shower, get dressed, go out for a little exercise. Interact with some people, explore, maybe get into some trouble. Rob some places, make some money.”

It’s worth treating 80 hours as a data point rather than a universal answer. Nelson is a developer intimately familiar with the game, and his run included some side content beyond a straight story-only path. Players who stick strictly to main missions will likely finish faster, while anyone chasing full completion across Leonida could easily land well past that number.

GTA 6 Versus Rockstar’s Past Campaigns

GTA 6 will place heavy focus on choices and consequences.

Commonly cited completion estimates for the series’ mainline story campaigns:

  • GTA Vice City: around 18-20 hours
  • GTA San Andreas: around 35-40 hours
  • GTA 4: around 28-30 hours
  • GTA 5: around 30-32 hours
  • Red Dead Redemption 2: around 50-60 hours
  • GTA 6: around 80 hours, per Nelson’s own playthrough

If that figure holds up across a typical playthrough, GTA 6 would be Rockstar’s longest mainline campaign by a wide margin, comfortably surpassing even Red Dead Redemption 2’s famously dense story. GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
