Rockstar Games posted a full statement on X, opening with an unusually candid tone for the studio. “We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week,” it reads.

“It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time. We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has, from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.”

The statement also addresses the Extended Look directly, acknowledging that some of its impact has already been undercut by the leaks. “We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow. It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve. While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.”

Rockstar closed by thanking the community directly. “We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week, your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine. Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games. We look forward to sharing more with you soon.”

A Different Tone Than Rockstar’s Last Major Leak Response

This statement reads very differently from how Rockstar handled its previous major leak. Back in September 2022, when a 17-year-old hacker leaked over 90 clips of early GTA 6 development footage, Rockstar’s response was brief and clinical, confirming the breach, expressing disappointment, and promising the game’s development timeline wouldn’t be affected. There was no apology, no direct address to fans, and no acknowledgment of frustration beyond a single line calling the situation disappointing.

This time, the tone is far more personal, an apology, an admission that development has taken longer than the team wanted, and direct thanks to fans who sent messages of support. That shift likely reflects just how different the two situations are. The 2022 leak hit a game still years from release, with no announced date to protect. This year’s leaks, led by a figure operating under the alias Cyberleek, arrived just months before a confirmed November 19 launch, and included what appeared to be footage from an actual playable build, a meaningfully bigger threat to the reveal Rockstar had been building toward.

Take-Two’s Legal Hunt For Cyberleek Continues

Take-Two has already taken legal action to try to identify Cyberleek, filing subpoenas against both Discord and Microsoft demanding account and device records tied to the leaks. Rockstar’s statement doesn’t mention that effort directly, focusing instead on reassurance rather than the ongoing investigation.

For now, Rockstar’s plans remain unchanged. The Extended Look still premieres on Netflix as scheduled, and GTA 6 is still targeting November 19 across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Whatever comes of the search for Cyberleek, Rockstar’s message makes clear the studio wants the conversation redirected toward the game itself rather than the leaks that have dominated the past few weeks.
