Story Highlights
- Xbox has announced a disc-to-digital program letting players claim a digital copy of games they already own on disc.
- Xbox Insiders begin testing the feature August 31, with thousands of Xbox One and Series X titles supported at launch.
- The announcement follows Sony’s plan to end PlayStation disc production entirely starting in 2028.
Xbox just gave disc collectors a reason to dig their old game cases back out of the closet.
Insert The Disc, Claim The Digital Copy
Xbox confirmed the program directly on Xbox Wire:
Today we are introducing a feature that brings the benefits of digital to physical discs, giving players more flexibility in how they access and play supported games across the Xbox ecosystem. Xbox Insiders can begin testing next week on August 31. This is part of our broader commitment to game preservation. As technology, devices, and distribution continue to evolve, preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever.”
Insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc, launch the game, and the system automatically claims a digital entitlement for it. Once claimed, that copy works across Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and the physical disc still functions exactly as it always has. Xbox says “most” Xbox One and Series X disc-based games support the feature, with thousands of titles included at launch and more added over time. A full list of supported games hasn’t been published yet.
A Direct Contrast To Sony’s Disc Plans

The timing here is hard to separate from what Sony’s been doing. PlayStation confirmed earlier this year that it will stop producing physical PS5 discs entirely starting in 2028, a decision that’s drawn sustained backlash from players and collectors, and one Sony has said repeatedly it has no plans to reverse. Xbox’s disc-to-digital program moves in the opposite direction, actively adding value to physical media rather than phasing it out.
That contrast lines up with an earlier claim from Digital Foundry’s John Linneman, who said back in July that Xbox was expected to keep supporting physical discs going forward, even as Sony moved to cut them off entirely. This program looks like the first concrete confirmation of that direction. It also stands in contrast to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick’s own comments earlier this month, when he said physical discs “don’t really make sense for the consumer” while defending GTA 6’s disc-free release, a reminder that not every major player in the industry is heading in the same direction on this.
What’s Still Unclear
Xbox hasn’t published which specific games will be excluded, only that “most” disc titles will qualify. It’s also not clear yet whether the digital entitlement is a permanent claim tied to the account or something that could be revoked under certain conditions, a question that matters given ongoing concerns across the industry about digital licenses disappearing when storefronts shut down or publishers pull support. For now, the rollout is limited to Xbox Insiders starting August 31, with a wider release timeline still unannounced.
