Xbox Will Continue To Support Physical Discs, Says Insider

Physical disc support is reportedly planned for Xbox's next console "Project Helix", according to Digital Foundry.

Story Highlights

  • Digital Foundry’s John Linneman says he has heard that Xbox will retain physical disc support.
  • He claims that this could be connected to Xbox’s disc-to-digital conversion efforts.
  • The claim arrives amid growing concern over Sony’s reported plans to end physical PlayStation games.

Xbox players may not have to abandon their physical libraries when Microsoft launches its next console. Digital Foundry’s John Linneman says he has heard that Xbox will continue supporting discs, although the exact implementation remains unclear.

Linneman discussed the subject during an episode of Digital Foundry Direct. His comments offer some reassurance to collectors, but he heard this before the current Xbox reset.

Xbox Disc Support May Continue With Project Helix

Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware is widely associated with the reported codename Project Helix. While its final specifications remain unknown, Linneman indicated that physical media support is still part of the company’s plans.

I don’t know where it is now, it sounds like Microsoft was actually very much going to continue disc support, not because they valued retail disc sales, but because they wanted to like ensure that all your Xbox games were still playable on new Xboxes.

That does not necessarily mean every model will ship with a traditional disc drive. Microsoft could release multiple configurations, reserve the drive for a premium console, or sell it as a detachable accessory. Until the company reveals the hardware, those details remain speculation.

Digital Foundry also reported that a disc-to-digital system could be a part of this strategy, potentially allowing players to access their physical copies digitally.

And it’s like, oh, we could offer maybe like an external drive or basically some means. And I think that might all tie into this disc-to-digital stuff as well

Physical Games Remain Important To Xbox

Physical games give players options that digital storefronts simply cannot replicate. Discs can be resold, lent to friends, purchased second-hand, and preserved without relying entirely on one platform holder’s servers.

The timing of Linneman’s claim is also significant. Sony has reportedly faced backlash over plans that could reduce or eliminate physical PlayStation disc releases, placing renewed attention on how console manufacturers intend to handle physical media.

According to Linneman, Microsoft may continue to support and preserve physical media while Sony will cut it off.

But I do see a future where Microsoft actually supports discs going forward for users who want to take their library with them, while Sony just completely cuts people off.

Microsoft supporting discs would therefore be more than a hardware feature. It could become a meaningful point of differentiation for its next console.

Still, expectations should remain under control. Linneman is a respected source for hardware analysis, but Microsoft has not confirmed Project Helix’s design, launch models, or disc-drive functionality. He also claimed that he heard this before the current Xbox reset, so it’s best to keep expectations in check for now.
