After 18 Years, Metal Gear Solid 4 Is Finally Free From PS3 Jail

Metal Gear Solid 4 just did something it’s never done before: show up on a console that isn’t a PlayStation 3.

Old Snake Finally Leaves The PS3 Behind

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 launched August 27, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, priced at $49.99. The headline addition is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which was released in 2008 and never left the PS3 for its entire 18-year existence until now. Every other mainline entry in the series eventually made its way to other platforms in some form. MGS4 never did, until this collection changed that.

The reason comes down to hardware, not licensing. MGS4 was built specifically around the PS3’s Cell Broadband Engine, a processor architecture co-designed by Sony, IBM, and Toshiba that worked nothing like a standard chip. Instead of the conventional processing model most hardware uses, the Cell required developers to manually split workloads across specialized units called Synergistic Processing Elements. That structure made porting large, tightly optimized PS3 exclusives to other platforms notoriously difficult and expensive, and MGS4 leaned on it more heavily than most.

What Else Is In The Collection

Master Collection Vol. 2 isn’t just MGS4 on its own. The full package includes:

• Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, including its complete single-player campaign and the standalone MGS4 Database encyclopedia app.
• Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, built from its earlier HD Collection version, with online co-op for up to six players restored, though without cross-platform play.
• Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, included as a bonus title.
• Archive content including screenplay books, master books, and a digital soundtrack.

Part Of A Broader Effort From Konami For IP Preservation

MGS4 long stood as one of the PS3 era’s last major console-exclusivity holdouts. Debates surrounding a modern Metal Gear Solid 4 port sparked with the release of Master Collection Vol. 1 in 2023, which brought the original three mainline games to modern platforms and signaled Konami’s willingness to treat its back catalog seriously.

Vol. 2 continues that shift by finally including MGS4, giving players the ability to play the entire mainline Metal Gear saga—from 1964’s Naked Snake missions through 2014’s Old Snake ending—on a single generation of hardware for the first time.
