EA Shot Down A Pitch For Dead Space 4 This Year, Confirms Glen Schofield

"The industry is in a weird place right now."

Story Highlights

  • The Dead Space franchise is one of the most iconic survival horror video game series of all time.
  • The last original game in the series, Dead Space 3, came out in 2013, which is more than a decade ago.
  • The creator of the series claims that he made a pitch for Dead Space 4, but it was rejected by EA, the publisher.

The Dead Space series has seen its fair share of ups and downs, considering how weirdly different the third main iteration in the franchise was as compared to the first and second games, but here’s something that really does not make sense, not for the average gamer at least. Appearing in an episode on the Dan Allen Gaming channel, franchise creator Glen Schofield let out a fairly interesting yet unnerving statement about the series’ immediate future.

Glen, during the Dead Space deep dive, was also joined by the rest of the franchise’s creatives, i.e. Bret Robbins and Christopher Stone, as he talked about the tragedy that has unfolded for fans of the series.

We tried, actually, you know. The three of us. Dead Space 4.

Glen then added, “I mean we’re talking this year.”

Glen then went on to explain that the team couldn’t help but understand the situation at hand, considering EA, as the publisher, has to consider numerous factors before greenlighting a project of this stature. Personally, I cannot see why and how a new rendition in one of the most beloved survival horror game franchises wouldn’t be a good idea.

We didn’t go too deep. They just said, ‘We’re not interested right now. We appreciate it blah blah blah,’ and, you know, ‘we know who to talk to.’ So we didn’t take it any further. And we respected their opinion. They know their numbers and what they have to ship and all that so, yeah.”

Christopher Stone, the second creative lead for Dead Space, also cited the industry’s current state to be the plausible cause behind EA’s inaction, saying that it can be fairly risky to venture past new boundaries in this day and age.

Christopher Stone said, “The industry is in a weird place right now. People are really hesitant to take chances on things. So you got to take it with a grain of salt. Who knows, maybe one day. I think we’d all love to do it.”

On a side note, Dead Space 3 is considered the black sheep of the series, for having introduced a type of gameplay and plot that did not resonate well with the rest of the franchise’s quality. It was only recently that the Dead Space remake came out, establishing a brilliant return to form for the IP, and igniting hope among fans and critics for Dead Space’s future.

I genuinely hope this series gets the treatment it deserves down the road, and EA reconsiders its decision to shut down Glen’s, Christopher’s, and Bret’s pitch.
