Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Studio Discusses Concluding DLCs And Plans Ahead

The devs will wrap up all DLCs, take a well-earned winter break, and "probably" come back with exciting big plans.

Story Highlights

  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is an action role-playing game by Warhorse Studios.
  • While the first title found great success on Game Pass, there are no plans to bring the sequel there.
  • We interviewed Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, Communications Director at Warhorse Studios, via email.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 brings players back to medieval Bohemia with a significantly larger world, expanded mechanics, and an even deeper focus on historical authenticity. With new additions like horse racing and Hardcore Mode already released a few months ago, Warhorse Studios has been steadily delivering on both fan expectations and post-launch support.

From Kuttenberg’s intricately planned NPC routines to subtle historical touches that boost immersion, the game’s attention to detail runs deep. To explore everything from post-launch surprises to the future of mod support, DLC plans, and the studio’s thoughts on game preservation, we spoke with Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, Communications Director at Warhorse Studios, over email.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Kuttenberg Is The Largest City Ever Created By Warhorse.

The free hardcore mode and horse racing both landed in early 2025. With both content types out, what player engagement data surprised you most, and has it shifted your plans for later DLC?

None, really. Hardcore mode is a bit of a fan favorite, so people naturally asked for it from the day KCD2 released. But we didn’t just want to copy the system from the first game, we spiced it up a little and made it more interesting. We like the idea of giving something for free to everyone while the big paid DLCs are being released. So we’ll see if we can deliver something like that again in the future.

Kuttenberg is the largest city yet. How many scripted NPC routines or timeline-driven scenes did you attempt, and were any cut for scope reasons?

In KCD2, every NPC has an occupation, like a miller, for example. But an occupation is actually a series of individual activities set by hand for each NPC. Usually, there are more activities assigned than can actually play out at any given time, to provide variety or fallback options in case a place or item needed is already in use. So there are thousands of hand-crafted activities in Kuttenberg alone. None were cut for technical reasons, but as always, there’s room for polishing. When the release deadline came, we had to stop updating that system.

The developers noted that the 1403 night sky is historically accurate. What other ‘hidden realism’ details exist that players usually miss?

That’s a very broad question, and I don’t really know where to start. From animal eyelashes to accurate reconstructions of historical buildings, the game is full of small details that probably only a few players will notice, but together they contribute to the overall feeling of immersion and authenticity.

Warhorse stuck with a seasoned version of CryEngine. Were there performance or scope cutbacks on consoles or PC because of engine limitations?

“Stuck” isn’t the right word. We chose to go with our own modified version of CryEngine, which serves us well and does exactly what we need. We have our own team at Warhorse Studios constantly upgrading and maintaining it, and I believe we did a hell of a job bringing the game to PC, Xbox, and PlayStation with such strong performance.

Now that official mod support has been introduced, are there plans to expand its capabilities further?

No, not at this moment.

Third-person mode has been requested frequently, and while there is such a mod for players who really want the experience, are there any plans to add something similar officially?

No. We believe that the first-person mode conveys what we want to achieve most, maximum immersion.

Without revealing the secret itself, are there any hidden details or easter eggs that players still haven't found months after the game's release?

I’m convinced there are, as we added quite a few easter eggs. On the other hand, I don’t know of any master list tracking who found what, so it’s hard to say.

Industry veterans like Arkane's Raphaël Colantonio have called Game Pass unsustainable. What are your thoughts on the platform's long-term sustainability? Is there a possibility we could see Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, or even a return of the first game, on Game Pass in the future?

I personally like Game Pass, but we currently have no collaboration in place. That said, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 performed amazingly well on the platform.

Hardcore Mode Returned As A Free Update With Extra Features.

Given that Kingdom Come is a single-player, offline-friendly experience, how do you see it aligning with the broader goals of the Stop Killing Games movement, especially when it comes to preservation and long-term accessibility?

That’s a very important topic, but also a nuanced and sensitive one. What I can say is that we, as developers, care a lot about making games that players can return to, even years down the line.

The team grew from a few dozen people to over 250 last I checked. Which studio areas (AI, narrative, tools, etc.) saw the biggest increases, and how did scaling up impact your development culture?

We’ve honestly grown in pretty much every department, which is a good sign. Warhorse Studios is doing well and even opened a new office recently.

With the full DLC roadmap wrapping up soon, are you planning a smaller ‘cooldown’ project, early prototyping for KCD3, or a team-wide break before moving forward?

We’ll have a little break around Christmas, as the DLCs follow right after release. One would think that after the game launch, everyone can relax, but that’s not the case. So we’ll now wrap up all DLCs, have a longer winter break, and then come back with, probably, big new plans.

What has been your favorite game of 2025 so far? And which title are you looking forward to the most?

2025 was, and still is, extremely strong. While it’s hard to pick a single favorite, I think Blue Prince is quite interesting. Personally, I’m really looking forward to Anno 117, Pax Romana.
